    I cannot understand how it is so helpful for the prints on the gun to be Seb's. He has no motive for the double murder (or is that to come?) Surely any police officer will investigate further especially when Seb claims the gun is Phelan's. Seems rather like clutching at straws.

    Yeah, but these are soap police, and in Weatherfield the boys in blue tend to take Phelan's word over hard evidence!

    Indeed. They don't even bother to look for any evidence. If Phelan says something that's good enough for them, no need to check.
