Spoiler warning: This article contains details of storylines which won't air on Channel 5 in the UK until March.

It's official – Home and Away has killed off popular character Kat Chapman.

Pia Miller's final scenes in the role of Kat have aired in Australia today (December 18), showing the policewoman meet a tragic end in a car crash.

Rumours that Kat would die have been circulating since August, when her funeral scenes were filmed on location.

Her exit storyline was finally screened today as part of Australia's 2017 season finale, which aired as a special 90-minute triple episode.

Kat made the fateful decision to go on the run with her boyfriend Robbo, freeing him from his prison cell after his past crimes had caught up with him.

While attempting to flee from Summer Bay forever, Kat and Robbo were involved in a terrifying collision with another vehicle.

The accident then led to a double tragedy as Kat was rushed to hospital and died alongside her unborn baby in heartbreaking scenes.

Tori Morgan was responsible for breaking the news to the baby's father Ash and her brother Justin, before the Bay's residents gathered for a candlelit vigil.

Robbo survived the crash, but his future in the Bay also looks uncertain as he's now on the run again as a wanted man.

In a further twist, the driver of the other vehicle was new character Jasmine Delaney, who's being played by Bachelorette star Sam Frost.

Speaking about filming her final scenes, Pia told TV Week: "It was super emotional. The cast and crew become an extended family. We spend more time with them then we do our own families sometimes, so it was incredibly hard knowing I wouldn't be returning back on set the following week.

"Like with anyone's last day, we have a really nice exit ceremony with everyone and our producer, Lucy, makes a toast. I felt sad but also really proud to have been part of the show."

She added: "It was a huge part of my life for three years and I am so proud to have been a part of Home and Away. It has provided me with a really solid foundation and so many skills."

Pia made her first appearance as Kat in February 2015 and later earned herself a nomination for Most Popular New Talent in Australia's biggest TV awards ceremony, the Logies.

Home and Away fans in the UK won't see Kat's final scenes until March 9, as Channel 5 still has nine weeks' worth of episodes to show which feature her character.

In Australia, Home and Away is expected to now be off air until late January.
