Warning: The following article contains discussion of grooming and sexual violence that some readers may find upsetting.

Coronation Street's Sonia Ibrahim has confirmed that her character Mel Maguire will permanently depart the cobbles when evil Nathan Curtis's trial concludes.

This week's episodes have featured Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) actually taking in Mel to help prove Nathan's vile abuse in the courtroom, unaware of Mel's potentially dark motives.

In an interview with The Sun about finishing up filming, Ibrahim reflected on the life-changing experience of working on one of Corrie's highest-profile storylines of the year.

"It's been an amazing time, it's been great to work here," she said. "The opportunity I've had is amazing and it's just a massive family and everyone's so welcoming and it's so nice to work with such great people."

However, Mel's storyline will only get more troubling before her departure — as she goes to the extreme length of kidnapping Bethany to stop her from testifying against Nathan.

"Mel is capable of doing anything," the actress admitted. "Whatever Nathan wants, Mel will do it and Nathan doesn't want Bethany to get to court. We know how brainwashed she is with Nathan."

Earlier this year, Ibrahim stressed to Digital Spy that the abuse that Mel herself suffered from Nathan is key to understanding why she'd help him procure underage girls.

"I think Mel feels quite a lot of guilt, because she can see that Bethany is a nice girl from a really nice family and Nathan is just using her, playing with her emotions and doing horrible things to her. Because Mel has been through this herself, she knows exactly what's going to happen and she knows there's no good outcome for Bethany whatsoever.

"There's so much guilt there, but Mel is so scared of Nathan that she knows what he's capable of. She goes along with it because she doesn't want it to happen to her again."

Shame she dies rather than getting imprisoned for aiding and abetting Nathan

I am glad Nathan, Neil and their evil ring was sent down but how were all convicted of the rape of Bethany, only Neil did, would it be conspiracy to commit rape or attempted rape, was their other girls testimonies besides Shona as none shown or mentioned, I am disappointed that certain parts of the trial were not shown
