Unhappy Roy Barraclough (Alec Gilroy) has died :(

Former Coronation Street star Roy Barraclough has died at the age of 81 after a short illness.

The actor was best known for his role as Bet Lynch's husband Alec Gilroy in the ITV soap, making his first appearance in 1972.

A spokesman for Barraclough said he died on Thursday (June 1) following a short illness.

Barraclough's character Alec appeared as a talent agent in Corrie in the early 70s, before going on to become a regular face on the cobbles from 1986 until 1992. He later returned in 1996 for two years, before making his final appearance in 1998.

Alec was best known for his stormy marriage to Bet Lynch, who was played by Corrie legend Julie Goodyear.

Over the years, the pair became an iconic Coronation Street duo, known for their constant bickering and entertaining comedy scenes.

Barraclough was seen on screens most recently last year, in a revival of classic sitcom Are You Being Served?. He also appeared in Casualty and Last Tango in Halifax.

In 2006, he was awarded an MBE for his services to drama and charity in the North West.
