    That's difficult to answer. Yes, he knows he is not really ill, but Factitious Disorder (FD) is a very serious mental condition. To give a not very good analogy - it's like someone being depressed; they know they are depressed but they can't just snap out of it. There are many possible underlying causes for FD (trauma, need for attention and depression amongst them) and you probably need to get at the cause before being able to treat the condition itself.

    ADHD cannot be prevented or cured. He would need to take medication for the rest of his life and get behaviour therapy.
