Meanwhile, over-worked Morven is disappointed when she has to discharge patient Roberta Blake, a homeless woman with a drink problem. She receives one more blow when she hears that another patient, Anne Fitzgerald, is unlikely to survive her injuries from an accident.

Rattled by her emotional and physical reaction to Anne's plight, Morven reluctantly agrees to go home after some encouragement from Fletch. Keen not to be alone in the flat, Morven uses her time off to do some volunteer work at the local homeless shelter she's been helping at since Arthur's death.

On arriving, she meets an eager and charming Cameron, who reveals that he used to be a med student but bailed out before becoming an F1. Roberta arrives for lunch and when she accidentally drops a birthday card, Morven discovers that Roberta has a daughter she abandoned decades ago.

When Morven helps Roberta find her daughter's social media profile they discover Roberta is a grandmother, but Roberta gets upset and leaves. Morven emails Roberta's daughter and is still hopeful of a reconciliation, but Cameron warns her to be careful getting so involved with someone else's life. Is she doing the right thing?

Wow, how dramatic was Holby City last night? Hot on the heels of Casualty's 30th anniversary special, the sister show's latest episode was jam-packed with shocks and surprises of its own. Not that we'd expect anything less.

First off, as we'd revealed at the weekend, Casualty's Connie Beauchamp and Steph Sims both crossed over into Holby for all the fallout from their car crash drama and the helicopter crash.

But the biggest surprises of the night came much later, as unstable patient James Fielding stabbed fan favourite Fletch - and Serena Campbell shared a kiss with Bernie Wolfe.

So, what happens next? We don't want to spoil too much, but next week's episode will explore the aftermath of both big twists as a new day dawns on the wards.

When Serena and Bernie arrive for work, the atmosphere between them is hugely awkward as they don't know how to act around each other.

Both are relieved when they hear that Fletch is doing well and can be taken off sedation, but there's a worrying twist when the first attempt to wake him doesn't go according to plan.

With Fletch's blood pressure dropping, everything is put on hold until further tests are done - giving Serena a chance to 'confide' in a sedated Fletch about her love life dramas when they get a moment alone.

Serena admits that she fears gossip about her personal life would be all around the hospital within minutes if the truth ever came out, hinting at a struggle ahead over her feelings.

Later, there's a second attempt to wake Fletch and the big question is whether it'll be a success. We're on tenterhooks just thinking about it!

Does Fletch stand any chance of making a full recovery? And what will Serena decide to do about Bernie? It's sure to be a must-see episode...

Holby City continues next Tuesday (September 6) at 8pm on BBC One.
