It would be impossible for Jack to be certain he could keep the deaths from the kids once it was common knowledge - unless he was prepared to upset and confuse them further by banning them from communicating with their friends.
However, I think there was also an element of wanting to keep it quiet to make it feel less real. Now he's seen the bodies he can no longer deny to himself that Ronnie is gone.

It was all about Jack's state of mind. He was in deep shock and not ready to deal with telling the kids since he couldn't quite believe it himself at the time.
However, both Max and Sharon were nagging him to tell them so we know that the writers didn't agree with keeping them in the dark.
