Kat needs to wear yellow in miserable grey Ireland, and to put some brightness into the miserable dour people she has to look at

In the penultimate episode of Kat and Alfie: Redwater, we can't help wondering whether Alfie Moon is making his secret pitch for a sensational return to EastEnders.

Confiding in killer priest Dermott following some bad news about his brain tumour, Alfie is weighing up his future: "It's funny. I was thinking as I was driving over here – who's gonna put the bins out? Because that was my little job every Tuesday night. I put the bins out."

With priorities like this, Alfie would definitely fit right back in on Albert Square griping about those pesky bin collections with Carmel and Co. Whoever thought bin mania would spread to Redwater too? (Alf should count himself lucky he's not on a fortnightly collection like the poor Walford lot.)

Jokes aside, it's nice to see Alfie finally get a chance to shine in the EastEnders spin-off show after spending the previous four episodes largely on the sidelines.

Still tormented by freaky visions and suffering in silence, Alfie anxiously heads to the hospital, where a new scan reveals that his tumour is growing.

Alfie decides not to confide in Kat with the latest worrying update on his health, but he does share the burden by unloading onto Dermott, despite the past few weeks of sniping between them.

Sensing that Alfie needs clarity in his life, Dermott agrees to baptise him – and even resists the urge to horribly murder him in the water. First time for everything! Maybe he's finally learning to control that temper of his?

Alfie's health issues haven't received nearly enough focus in Redwater so far, but with the end now drawing closer for this six-part drama, it seems we have another last-minute hook on our hands to stop the EastEnders fans from switching over to Emmerdale at 8pm on a Thursday.

Will we get to learn Alfie's fate in the finale next week? Could Redwater even pull off the ultimate shock by killing off Alfie? In honesty, we doubt it, but we'll certainly be watching next week just in case.

It's not just Alfie's woes thrown in to keep the EastEnders fans interested this week, after Kat's daughter Zoe also gets a name-check when Dermott finally finds out that he has a twin. (Kat had neglected to mention that part of the convoluted story – oops.)

Dermott isn't too pleased over Kat keeping her cards so close to her chest and forces her to promise there are absolutely no more secrets, which she does. With the series finale looming, we can't help wondering whether Kat will live to regret that lie very soon.

Another thing we've learned is that Redwater loves a gathering, whether it's funerals, memorial barbecues or village festivals.

This week it's the christening of Bernie and Andrew's newborn son Lance, which is almost ruined when Andrew crashes his car while on an errand with his cousin-slash-love-interest Kieran and passes the time by sleeping with him.

Fast forward a few hours and it's all turning sour between them again, with Andrew harshly rejecting Kieran in the pub toilets and throwing a bottle at him. We don't think we've seen a romance this rocky since the early days of Emmerdale's Robron.

With just one episode of Redwater left, there are plenty of questions still in the mix – will Kat discover her son is a killer? Will Dermott strike again? Is Alfie going to die from his brain tumour? Could Bernie's painfully slow murder investigation finally get a result? And will the Kieran/Andrew secret be exposed?

As question marks are hanging over Redwater's future if tabloid reports are to be believed, we'd love to see as many questions answered as possible rather than being left with too many loose ends. Fingers crossed for a finale to remember...
