    Exclamation Pierce Harris (Jonathan Wrather)

Former Coronation Street actor Jonathan Wrather has joined the cast of Emmerdale as Pierce Harris.

Pierce comes on the scene as his wife Tess (Nicola Stephenson) is having an affair with vet Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt).

However, Paddy never expected to come face-to-face with Tess's husband.

Tensions are sure to rise as Pierce makes his first appearance mid-February.

Wrather has appeared in a host of TV shows, including Coronation Street and Silent Witness.

"I am thrilled to be joining Emmerdale," he said.

"It's a great opportunity to be offered the chance to create a new character in one of TV's most popular shows and I'm very excited to be working with such an outstanding cast and team.

Emmerdale newcomer Pierce Harris will become a force to be reckoned with as he seeks answers over the death of his wife Tess.

Jonathan Wrather made his first appearance in the role in Thursday night's dramatic double bill (February 11), which saw Tess killed by Kirin Kotecha in a drunken hit and run.

As Pierce battles through his grief in the coming days and weeks, he'll naturally have lots of questions to ask. Could he uncover the affair that Tess was having with Paddy Kirk before her death?

Speaking in-depth about his role for the first time, Wrather revealed: "Pierce is shellshocked and it's a maelstrom of grief, but then it shifts. It's very intricate and as the story pans out, it shifts from one thing to another. It's very well-written in the sense that we get to play out these little intricacies.

"It could go any number of ways at the moment and we are not entirely sure. When we first meet him properly and get to see a little bit of what he is like, he is quite obsessive about trying to find out what the hell went on. But you can empathise with that because of the circumstances under which he arrives.

"We've already heard that he is a little amiss and not as attentive as you might be. He is also very career-orientated. But Tess's death is a catalyst for him to think about what he's done because the most important thing in his life is now gone.

"Where he goes from there and how that manifests itself, we are not sure yet."

It won't just be Paddy who has reason to be nervous about Pierce, as Rhona also discovers the truth about the affair next week.

Rhona decides to just carry on as normal to avoid jeopardising her adoption plans with Paddy, but can she stop herself from slipping up around Pierce?

Wrather's Emmerdale casting was announced last month, but fans had no idea that he wouldn't actually be sharing any scenes with his on-screen wife Nicola Stephenson, who played Tess.

He laughed: "We've never met. It seems strange that we don't get any screen time together whatsoever! Pierce was spoken of and we saw his house, but the only time you saw me there was in a photograph in the background."

In a shocking Emmerdale double which saw the death of Tess Harris, viewers got the first glimpse of her husband Pierce, who turned up to the hospital and was grief stricken as he lost his wife.

We have heard from Tess that her marriage has been shaky – hence her obsessive affair with Paddy Kirk. But actor Jonathan Wrather will soon become a staple of Emmerdale life – which can only be bad news for Paddy and Rhona.

Speaking about Pierce, Emmerdale’s executive producer John Whiston told Metro.co.uk: ‘We’ve always said an event should always be the start of something new – it should be a collision that sends the story in a new direction. We see something new coming out of two storylines and it’s very exciting.

‘Jonathan is a fantastic addition – and we all know how evil he can be! He may not know how evil he is going to become yet…’

We also spoke to Jonathan himself, who spoke about his new role. Here is what he was able to reveal:

Did you know any of the cast before the show?

Yes, Chris Bisson [Jai]. We worked together a long time ago. I also knew Bill Ward [James] because we worked together in the same show as well and our paths haven’t crossed since then. We haven’t had any scenes together yet and I don’t know if we ever will.

Was it weird coming onto a show playing a character whose on screen partner has been killed off and you’ve never met?

Yeah we’ve never met. We’ve had this conversation and it seems strange that we don’t get any screen time together whatsoever. Pierce is spoken of and we actually go to our house but the only time you see me there is in a photograph in the background.

What kind of character will Pierce turn out to be?

He is shell-shocked and it is a maelstrom of grief but then it shifts. It is very intricate and as the story pans out, it shifts from one thing to another. It is very well-written in the sense that we get to play out these little intricacies. That is one of the great things about the show. It is so well written and you get all these scenes – some long and some little vignettes which are a real insight into how someone reacts to something right there in the moment.

It could go any number of ways at the moment and we are not entirely sure. When we first meet him properly and get to see a little bit of what he is like, he is quite obsessive about trying to find out what the hell went on but you can empathise with that because of the circumstances under which he arrives. We’ve already heard that he is a little amiss and not as attentive as you might be. He is also very career orientated but Tess’s death is a catalyst for him to think about what he’s done because the most important thing in his life is now gone. Where he goes from there and how that manifests itself – we are not sure yet.

Emmerdale's Pierce Harris is a man on a mission next week as he desperately seeks answers over the death of his wife Tess.

With so much drama surrounding the affair that Paddy Kirk had with Tess before her demise, it's been easy to forget about the hit and run crime which was at the centre of the tragedy.

Keen for his wife's killer to get justice, Pierce takes matters into his own hands by distributing flyers at the scene of the accident next week.

As he continues to play detective, Pierce soon makes a discovery that he didn't expect and it's not long before he's vowing to stick around in the Emmerdale village to secure further answers.

Could this be bad news for local lawyer Rakesh Kotecha, who's still trying to protect his son Kirin? Whatever happens, we're sure it can't end well...

Jonathan Wrather, who plays Pierce, revealed: "He's obsessive about trying to find out what happened. He's not dealing with it at all. Pierce is spiralling to a fairly dark place within himself, because he's so distressed. The fact that information is not forthcoming about what happened to Tess is making it worse.

"Pierce starts to suspect foul play after a short period, because he's being drip-fed all of these snippets of information about Kirin, about Kirin and Vanessa's relationship, and about Rhona and Paddy's relationship too.

"He seems to be the last person to get all of this information, so it's not surprising that he feels fairly paranoid and peeved. He's the one who knows the least but deserves to know the most.

"When Pierce does start to find out about Kirin, he obviously wants to know even more. I'm not sure what he's going to do when he finds Kirin, but he actively seeks him out through Rhona, Vanessa and eventually Rakesh."

We all know that Adam Fielding, who played Kirin, has already left Emmerdale - but could there still be a way for Pierce to get justice?

    TW:
Spoilers say that Pierce hands out flyers to car drivers on 19 April. When he does find out about Kirin by 21 April, DS says that Pierce from then "actively seeks him [Kirin] out through Rhona, Vanessa and eventually Rakesh". I suppose that Pierce could just phone Rhona when she is in Germany on or after 21 April, otherwise (and more likely, I think) Pierce must meet Rhona around Emmerdale village and so Rhona and Paddy don't leave for Germany on 18 April, if at all?
