    Exclamation Rory Finn Finnegan

Hollyoaks gets a blast from the past later this month as James Redmond reprises his role as Rory 'Finn' Finnegan.

The actor has filmed a brief return appearance to tie in with the Channel 4 soap's 20th anniversary celebrations.

Finn returns to the village after his old friend Tony Hutchinson agrees to renew his wedding vows with Diane O'Connor (Alex Fletcher).

Tony and Diane are currently separated, but they make their big decision as a romantic act of spontaneity.

With Finn in attendance for the last-minute ceremony, Tony and Diane hope their big day will be perfect.

The wedding storyline gives Hollyoaks' original star Nick Pickard a chance to take centre stage in the soap's milestone week. With high drama and explosive showdowns taking place elsewhere in the village, could this be the big feel-good moment of the 20th anniversary?

Redmond played the role of Finn between 1997 and 2002. He also returned for the 2013 series of Hollyoaks Later.

Hollyoaks bosses are bringing back Tony Hutchinson's old friend Rory "Finn" Finnigan for another guest stint, Digital Spy can exclusively reveal.

James Redmond has signed up to reprise his role as Finn and he'll be reappearing on our screens at the end of the year.

Hollyoaks' executive producer Bryan Kirkwood announced the news exclusively in a chat with Digital Spy, confirming that there'll be more to come from Finn in 2018 too.

He told us: "We'll be seeing a bit of James Redmond over Christmas and New Year. James will be coming and going as the much-loved Finn."

James played the role of Finn as a Hollyoaks regular between 1997 and 2002.

After an 11-year absence, Finn returned for the sixth series of Hollyoaks Later in 2013 and also featured in Hollyoaks' 20th anniversary celebrations in 2015, turning up in the village for Tony's wedding to Diane.

Bryan told Digital Spy that the team at Hollyoaks have been inspired by the positive reception that Luke Morgan and Mandy Richardson's comebacks had over the summer.

The popular characters helped to boost ratings for the show over the "summer of secrets" – and the good news is that their journeys are only just beginning, with a big storyline on the horizon for Luke.

Bryan explained: "We are so thrilled with where we are at the moment, with celebrating our heritage and bringing back legacy characters.

"I think there was a feeling up until our 20th birthday that we should always be looking forward – they were certainly conversations that we had with Channel 4. But now that we've reached the ripe old age of 22, it's fantastic to be able to celebrate the loyalty of our audience.

"Some of the people who started watching us as teenagers are now mums themselves, who are maybe watching Hollyoaks with their own teenagers.

"It's fantastic to have Luke and Mandy back in the show. We've got to strike the right balance. We need to move forward with our new, brilliant cast while also having a healthy dose of nostalgia."

Hollyoaks star James Redmond has spoken about his return to the show for the first time.

Next week's nostalgic episodes see the actor reappear as Tony Hutchinson's friend Finn for the first time in two years.

As Tony's wife Diane is struggling with his strange behaviour, she asks Finn to return to the village to talk to him – just in time for a 'come as you were' throwback party that he's arranged at The Loft.

Speaking about the storyline, James revealed: "Tony is in a bit of a mess and Diane rings Finn to try and sort him out. However, it doesn't really go well, because Finn just arrives and kind of takes the mickey out of Tony.

"Finn and Tony have often had a bit of a love/hate relationship. They'd both be devastated if anything happened to one another, but they are very different.

"Tony is very serious and Finn is very laid back and a bit of a joker, but they do care about each other, so it'll be nice to see them helping each other out.

"I think some of your best friends are the ones who can say quite brutal, blunt stuff, and Finn is kind of one of those friends to Tony and vice versa."

He added: "Finn has aged a bit and is a bit more self-aware, but he's always been laid back and a bit of a ladies' man and a joker. So I think definitely expect bit more of that and a bit of fun.

"It's great to return because it's not only coming back into the show with new characters, I have scenes with cast members I worked with 18 years ago. It's amazing."

Finn was a Hollyoaks regular between 1997 and 2002, before returning for guest appearances in Hollyoaks Later in 2013 and the main show in 2015.
