Neighbours hunk Aaron Brennan will be taking centre stage on the Aussie soap in the coming weeks as he deals with new relationship and family dramas.

The good news is that Aaron could finally make some progress with his on-off love interest David Tanaka (Takaya Honda), but life back at home is looking a little more rocky as the Brennans' mother pays a long-awaited visit.

Digital Spy recently caught up with Matt Wilson, who plays Aaron, for all the gossip on what's next for his character.

Are you enjoying exploring the romantic dynamic between Aaron and David?

"Yeah, I am. It's been going on for a long time, hasn't it? Sometimes it's like the rollercoaster ride that never ends! But we do have a bit of a resolution coming up soon. It's a very welcome resolution, it's quite triumphant and I'm confident that everyone is going to be glad to see it."

Sounds promising! Do you think they make a good match?

"I think they're perfect because they're not the same person, they're the complete opposite. Aaron is everything David wants to be and David is everything Aaron wants to be. So they kind of look up to each other in a way, which is really cute."

Has there been a lot of feedback from the fans?

"Yeah, there's been a lot of love for David and Aaron. I thought people would get a lot more frustrated with the storyline and how it's been played out for so long. A lot of people have, but there's so much support there too. There's a 'Daaron' Instagram fan page, a 'Daaron' hashtag and you see people tweeting after every episode.

"We've also just started airing in Canada, so you see a lot of new Canadian fans sending messages through about how they love the relationship. There's a bit of drama still to come for them, so I think Aaron and David just need to let each other talk, say what's on their minds and follow their hearts rather than their heads."

What has Takaya been like to work with on the storyline?

"It's been really good to work with him. Takaya is very talented and he's done quite a bit of work. I think he's on three different TV shows currently airing in Australia right now – Play School and The Family Law, as well as Neighbours. So he really knows what he's doing and he's always open to workshopping different scenes for the David and Aaron relationship."

What can you tell us about the Brennans' mum coming into the show soon?

"She's played by an absolutely brilliant actress, but I'm not sure I'm allowed to say who it is yet. There's a lot of chemistry with her and the three Brennan brothers. She fits right in as their mother, but in classic soap style, there's no smooth entry for her.

"All of the Brennan brothers have issues with her, and Aaron in particular behaves very out of character towards his mum. So it's quite confusing at first and there's curveballs in store. It was a really, really fun story to map out and play. We all put in a lot of work on it, and I think it's going to pay off."

Were you glad to have that chance to explore the Brennan family history?

"Yeah, the show turns into 'the Brennan show' for a while! There's so much to explore there. It's also good to play something for your character that's a little bit unpredictable. Aaron is quite a predictable person because he wears his heart on his sleeve, and you usually know how he's going to react to any situation.

"But this one is different for him and it's hard to figure out what's going on at first. I think a lot of people will relate to the issues that Aaron has with his mother. They go through the whole process of resolving that. David also helps Aaron along in pushing him to resolve it, but there's going to be a lot of emotion in the Brennan household."

We've heard previously that Neighbours originally intended to bring back the Brennans' father Russell, but actor Russell Kiefel then tragically died in real life. Did this new storyline takes its place?

"Yeah, they did have to change the story. The writing team came up with an alternative, but they obviously wanted to be very sensitive towards Russell Kiefel's family while playing it out.

"It was very emotional filming everything because everyone was doing it in memory of Russell Kiefel. So this next storyline is very emotionally loaded. Also, it's not just that storyline but what happens afterwards too. We're still filming that at the moment and it goes on for quite some time."

Are you happy to stick with the show for now?

"Yeah, it's so much fun and it's not a monotonous job – it's not like a factory job. Sure we go in at the same time, we hit the marks and we say the words, but it changes every single day. Every time you're given a new storyline, you focus on that and it just reinvents your day every single time.

"Every weekend, we'll look at the scripts for the next week and you can map out how you're going to do it. You'll always do it a different way than you would have done it the week before, because you get inspiration from all of the other actors."

What are your hopes for Aaron's future?

"Oh, I've always said that I want Aaron to save the day! But I think that's just Matt talking, as Aaron would always try to avoid any kind of traumatic situation.

"I also want David and Aaron to get married and go all the way. I think that would be a really powerful storyline to play."

Did you get to meet Adele when she came to Ramsay Street as a tourist earlier this year?

"Nobody did! I was at her concert a few days earlier and she was talking while she was performing. She spoke about how she tries to avoid the media and some of the pictures that she posts up. She said: 'Usually I'll book something and we won't tell anyone, we won't beef up the security, I'll just rock up, I'll wear my plain clothes and I'll take my photo, but I won't post it for a few days so that everyone thinks that I'm there now but I'm not!'

    © INSTAGRAM @ADELE
"Then she went and posted a picture of herself on Ramsay Street one morning and everyone lost their minds saying: 'She's just down the road?! Let's go!'

"They got in the car and rushed off but she'd already gone – she'd probably already left the country! (Laughs.) But everyone was excited and we did then try inviting her to the studio, so we tried our best! It's good to know that she loves the show, that was awesome."

There's been lots of speculation about Neighbours' future this year, including recently due to Channel 10 in Australia going into administration. Have the producers reassured the cast?

"It's a lot less of an issue than you think it is! What we've been told is that it's work as usual. You also speak to people like Alan Fletcher who've been on the show for so many years and they say: 'Yeah, every time the contract comes up for renewal, there is speculation and there are press stories but you just go to work, do your thing and enjoy your time'."

We usually zone out of a YouTube video by the time we get to the 'don't forget to like and subscribe' bit at the end, but with this recent Neighbours backstage video we're glad we didn't – because it looks like a huge plotline is being teased.

The video, which is a tour of the new Erinsborough Pavilion set, ends with a quick message from Dr Karl (wearing some dashing purple gloves), but what's that name on the bed? 'T Brennan'? Uh-oh.

Tyler actor Travis Burns responded to tweets from concerned fans, saying: "Something massive is on the horizon" – and if that's not ominous, we don't know what is!

While it's currently unclear what puts Tyler in hospital, we do know that the Brennan family is going to be shaken to the core in the near future, as Mummy Brennan (not her actual name) will be appearing very soon.

Aaron Brennan actor Matt Wilson recently told Digital Spy: "She fits right in as their mother, but in classic soap style, there's no smooth entry for her.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5.

Neighbours star Matt Wilson is backing a long-term future for Aaron Brennan and David Tanaka, admitting that he'd even like to see the pair become parents.

Fans have been rooting for a romance between Aaron and David for months and it seems that there could be a happy ending in sight as the duo finally share a kiss next week.

Whether or not an actual relationship is on the cards still remains to be seen, but Matt – who plays Aaron – is keen for the 'Daaron' to settle down together.

When asked by Inside Soap if he wants the couple to last the distance, Matt said: "Oh yeah, I want to see them go the whole hog!

"I want them to get married and own their own house on Ramsay Street, and maybe even have a baby."

Reiterating his hopes that Aaron and David will have a same-sex marriage in Neighbours, Matt added: "Wouldn't that be great? Especially as gay marriage isn't actually legal in Australia.

"I think that would be sending out a huge message, and that would be really powerful. It's just fiction, so it doesn't matter that it's not legal – the country would love it."

Viewers will have to stay tuned to see if Matt gets his wish, but there is plenty of drama in story for Aaron in the meantime as Neighbours recently announced the Brennan brothers' mum Fay is on her way to Ramsay Street.

    Digital Spy article:

Neighbours star Matt Wilson reveals all on Aaron's engagement and Tyler return hopes.

The actor wants a "fairytale ending" for Aaron and David.

Neighbours airs another milestone moment later this week as Aaron Brennan and David Tanaka get engaged.

The Aussie soap is paving the way for its first gay wedding with the romantic scenes, which see Aaron pop the question and David (Takaya Honda) reveal that he was planning to do exactly the same thing.

Digital Spy recently caught up with Matt Wilson, who plays Aaron, for the lowdown on the proposal scenes and the future for 'Daaron'.

Are you pleased that Aaron and David are getting engaged?

"I'm over the moon. It's been a long time coming. The writers have run out of ideas to string it out any longer! It's an exciting moment and a milestone in my career."

What kind of reaction are you expecting from the fans?

"Judging by the fans' reaction on social media, I think it is going to be one of the most anticipated engagements in a long time on Neighbours."

What can we expect from the proposal scene?

"It was a big scene. We shot it at a beach, which looks amazing. There are some really funny moments, so viewers will have a laugh before they cry."

In the aftermath, Aaron reveals that he's keen to tie the knot ASAP, while David wants to take things slowly. Why does Aaron want to do things so quickly?

"It has been a long time coming and they are in a really great place at the moment. Aaron definitely isn't as traditional as David, who wants the longer engagement of at least 12 months.

"David wants everything to be elegant and classic, whereas Aaron wants to get on with the party. They are engaged, so why not just seal the deal with a wedding?"

What can you tease about where things will go from here? Will Neighbours have its first gay wedding this year?

"We haven't seen anything yet from the writers, but we have our fingers crossed that they will finally have their fairytale ending. But it's Neighbours, so we'll have to wait and see – things never usually go to plan on Ramsay Street!"

Have we seen the last of the drama between Aaron and David?

"I hope so, but the writers always throw us a curve ball and I'm expecting some speed bumps along the way."

How are you all coping without having Travis Burns (Tyler) on set? Were you sad to see him go?

"Yes it was incredibly sad to see Trav go and the Brennan brothers to split up. It would have been great to see the dynamic of all three brothers with their sister Chloe in the household as well.

"Personally, I don't think his character is fully wrapped up, there are still a lot of loose ends to tie up. If we could get him back that would be great, but that's out of my control."

Would you like to see a twist where Hamish's killer turns out not to have been Tyler?

"As I said, I think there is more to Tyler's story but who knows, that's up to the writers!"

How do you feel about the writers expanding the Brennan family by introducing Chloe?

"I think it's great and the Brennan house definitely works better with three than two – you can then work the conflict of two against one. There is so much to explore with Chloe. She has similar traits to Tyler so I think she fills the void really well."

Will Chloe spark a lot more Brennan family drama this year?

"Yes, you'll soon learn that Chloe is quite the brat and always up to mischief. She has a few secrets that will be revealed and her brothers are always in the mix trying to clean up the mess."

Fans had a lot of praise for the David and Rafael bedroom scene a few weeks ago. Would you like to have a similar opportunity to explore that side of the David/Aaron relationship?

"David and Rafael had an incredible connection and it was so strong, at times it felt that Aaron and David were never going to get back together. Now that they are back together, you'll definitely see more intimacy together, particularly during the proposal."

Can you give us any final hints on what you've been filming recently?

"Lots more exploring with the Brennan family."

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5.

Daily Telegraph article. Neighbours filmed Aaron & David's wedding today, with Magda Szubanski playing the role of celebrant Jemima Davies-Smythe:

Neighbours set for an Australian TV first

IT WAS a historic moment on the set of Neighbours today as the long running soap filmed the first same-sex wedding on Australian television.

While Nine drama House Husbands featured a commitment ceremony, it is the first official gay wedding and the first since same sex-marriage was legalised.

Magda Szubanski filled the role of celebrant Jemima Davies-Smythe as actors Matt Wilson and Takaya Honda said their I do’s as characters Aaron and David.

“I think it is very special,” Wilson told Confidential in January when Neighbours filmed the proposal.

“A lot of the times we try to attack issues on the show and sometimes they have been and gone in the media or they don’t get as much light as they can but this should absolutely bring the issue to the surface.”

Shot in Melbourne, Neighbours has been on air for 33 years and has been known for pushing boundaries on different social issues.

The wedding will air over the coming months on Channel 10.

“Ever since the days of Scott and Charlene, Neighbours viewers have loved a wedding — and it’s high time a gay couple had the chance to walk down the aisle,” Neighbours executive producer Jason Herbison said.

“The passing of same sex marriage means all our characters, gay or straight, have the chance to celebrate their love, as it should be. I can’t promise that David and Aaron’s journey to the altar will be smooth sailing but they will make it to the big day — and we are going to go big.”

Neighbours' Aaron Brennan faces a backlash from Paul Robinson after a surprise discovery
So much for impressing his future father-in-law…

    http://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neig...nnan-backlash/

Neighbours fans will see Aaron Brennan's attempts to impress Paul Robinson backfire badly next week.

Aaron (Matt Wilson) is keen to get in the good books of his future father-in-law and spies an opportunity when Paul starts focusing on improving life for his family.

Next week, Paul (Stefan Dennis) decides to give his loved ones his full attention for a while, after receiving yet another romantic rejection from Terese Willis.

As Paul licks his wounds, he takes his mind off his heartbreak by trying to help his son David Tanaka progress with his career.

When Paul learns that David is specialising in surgery but is lacking support, he creates a mentorship program specifically for his son, wanting to give him a push up the career ladder.

With David's problems sorted, Aaron sees that Paul may need another new project and asks him to become his business mentor.

Aaron reckons this is the perfect way to earn some extra brownie points with Paul, but things turn sour when Paul takes a look at his books.

Much to Paul's dismay, the figures show that Aaron is on the brink of financial collapse and the future of his mini-gym The Shed is in doubt.

As Aaron reels from the bad news, Paul goes to Mishti Sharma and offers to buy her share of the struggling business. But is this what Aaron really wants? Could working with bossy Paul prove to be the ultimate nightmare for laid-back Aaron?

Neighbours airs these scenes on Friday, August 10 at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5.

Neighbours' Aaron Brennan hides a painful secret after a nasty accident
With just weeks to go before the big 'Daaron' wedding.

    http://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neig...ainful-secret/

Neighbours' Aaron Brennan hides a secret agony next week, with less than a month to go before his wedding.

Aaron (Matt Wilson) faces his worst nightmare when he suffers a painful injury after a highly stressful few days at work.

Upcoming episodes see Aaron come under serious pressure over his fitness business, thanks to his future father-in-law Paul Robinson buying Mishti Sharma's share.

Now Aaron's official business partner, ruthless Paul bombards him with unwanted suggestions on how to improve profits and efficiency – including cutting down staff.

Aaron ends up giving in to Paul's demands, but then has to work late packing up stray weights.

When he picks up a kettle bell awkwardly, he throws his back out and is later found in agony by his sister Chloe (April Rose Pengilly).

Although Aaron puts on a brave face and assures Chloe that his back pain is nothing to worry about, he can't help wondering how it's going to affect the wedding.

Aaron decides to simply live with the pain and avoid any strenuous activity for a while, but with fewer staff to cover classes for him and Paul constantly making new demands, it's not going to be easy to keep on top of everything.

Fortunately, Chloe is on hand to help out at The Shed, but Aaron is still determined to keep his injury a secret. He's especially keen to stop his fiancé David from finding out, not wanting to admit that Paul's behaviour is stressing him out. But how long can he keep David in the dark?

Neighbours airs these scenes on Thursday, August 16 and Friday, August 17 at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5.

Neighbours reveals wedding day drama for Aaron Brennan and David Tanaka
Their day doesn't go by without a few hitches.

    http://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neig...wedding-drama/

Neighbours hunk Aaron Brennan arrives at his wedding in a wheelchair next week – much to the shock of his husband-to-be David Tanaka.

Aaron (Matt Wilson) is already in agony after suffering a back injury earlier this month, but disaster strikes when he hurts himself even further on the day of the ceremony.

The gym boss is unable to walk as a result of his latest mishap, but he's still determined to get down the aisle and ends up being supported by his siblings Mark and Chloe.

In another last-minute hitch, an eccentric new celebrant called Jemima Davies-Smythe oversees the proceedings as a replacement for Susan Kennedy.

Jemima's unique style means that the day isn't quite what Aaron and David (Takaya Honda) had been expecting, but she certainly gets everyone laughing as the wedding goes ahead in romantic scenes.

Show bosses previously announced the casting of Australian actress and LGBTQ+ rights activist Magda Szubanski in the role of Jemima, who's also the long-lost half-sister of Karl Kennedy.

Neighbours' executive producer Jason Herbison recently told Digital Spy: "It's a fantastic episode and the first same-sex wedding on Australian TV since marriage equality was legalised, so it was very meaningful to all of us on the production.

"We love 'Daaron' and it was an extra special treat to cast Magda Szubanski as the celebrant, as she was a big campaigner for marriage equality over here.

"It was filmed on a pretty cold and miserable Melbourne day, but everyone had the biggest smiles on their faces. Our art department created a fantastic setting, Chris Adshead did a wonderful job of directing and Paul Gartside wrote a terrific script."

Neighbours airs these scenes on Monday, September 3 at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5.
