However the ante is upped when Robert tells the former wheeler and dealer that he is going to propose to Tracy on Christmas day.
Dropping his bombshell, and promptly leaving, Robert leaves Rob alone to ponder what there mercurial Tracy might do next.
Speaking about his return to the Cobbles, Marc said: 'Rob's had a lot of time to think about things over the last year and ponder why he ended up where he is. He's got a sternness to him, he's a bit colder than he was before.'
He continued: 'Rob's of the attitude that if he's having it so hard for the foreseeable future then why should everyone else have it so easy.
'He feels that he's been hard done by and he just wants a little bit of payback.'
Marc first hit the cobbles in 2011 as Carla's reformed jailbird brother, but following his romance with Tracy the dodgy dealer ended up killing Tina McIntyre - which he then tried to pin on Peter Barlow.

Coronation Street's Tristan Gemmill is hinting at a possible dark side emerging in his character Robert Preston.
Gemmill made his debut on the cobbles as the former schemer last year, taking over the role from Julian Kay.
Robert has thus far kept his emotions in check in his comeback, but Gemmill is teasing that his relationship with Tracy Barlow could lead to his darker side emerging.
"He's admitted to Leanne that he's had anger issues in the past and occasionally you do see a flash of something," Gemmill said.
"Maybe he's got more of a history, a few secrets locked away. At the moment he's in control of everything but there's a hint that if his back was against the wall then maybe he could do darker things."
In spite of their troubled past, could there still be hope for Robert and Tracy?
"He's deeply hurt by what's happened, he was about to propose to her when he heard she'd been with an old flame," the actor explained. "He's angry about that but deep down Tracy's the one that he loves and that doesn't go away so quickly.
"He's got that anger but he can't get rid of the emotion of where that comes from. He tries to block that out by focussing on his work and trying to get a share of the business."

Every seemingly nice character in soaps declares that they have a darker side to them....whatever that means
I know its one of the "cliche" personality
types.
But Robert was only in Corrie for a few
episodes years ago- I remember him
talking to Ken most. It was never really
shown/ explain what happened between
Robert & Tracy when they broke up.
So SWs can retcon anything. Also sort
of part actor plays well. Mainly because
it reminds of a man of friend got involved
with years ago and that was......
We will have to wait and see if the soap
cliche comes true for once?

Coronation Street spoiler – Robert Preston’s ultimatum for Tracy Barlow
Tracy Barlow finds herself on the back foot in next week’s Coronation Street when she’s issued an ultimatum by Robert Preston.
The scheming local is dumped by Robert after he finds out about how she has been blackmailing Carla Connor after discovering he slept with her.
A miserable Tracy reveals to Carla that as Robert’s dumped her there’s now nothing to stop her from revealing the truth to Nick Tilsley.
Panicking Carla persuades Robert that Tracy only acted the way she did out of love for him and that he shouldn’t throw away what they’ve got.
With her words ringing in his ears Robert calls at No.1 and agrees to give Tracy another chance but on condition she stops waging a hate campaign against Carla and never tells Nick about their indiscretion.
Will Tracy be able to give up her vendetta against one of her biggest rivals on the cobbles?
Tristan Gemmill, who plays Robert, says he’s not sure the couple have much of a future, he said: “He’s seen how destructive she can be and he’s taken a moral position on that.
“Her behaviour and his moral stance don’t run a parallel course and at some point they’re going to collide and he won’t be able to find a way to forgive her any more. Maybe this could be the moment.”
