isha Merry on Steph Britton future, Tina's exit

Coronation Street newcomer Steph Britton has been brought to the forefront of the soap in recent weeks as she has become the main confidante of established regular Tina McIntyre.

With Tina still caught up in a messy affair with Peter Barlow, viewers will see Steph act as the voice of reason in future episodes as she urges her friend and flatmate to end the relationship.

Digital Spy recently chatted to Tisha Merry, who plays Steph, for her thoughts on the ongoing storyline and life at Corrie.

How does it feel to now be a regular cast member on Coronation Street?
"It's absolutely amazing. At first I came into the show last year for ten episodes and I was absolutely thrilled with that, but part of me was thinking, 'I really, really wish I had a permanent role'. I was really sad when I left because I'd just got to know everybody. When I found out that I was being brought back on a permanent basis, I was absolutely over the moon."

How long after your initial departure did you find out that you'd be back?
"I did the ten episodes and a few months later I heard that they wanted me back for another couple of episodes. Shortly after that, there were rumours that I'd be coming back again, but I didn't want to get my hopes up. I waited it out, but then the contract came through and I screamed my head off!"

What was your first day on set like?
"I remember walking down the road to the old Quay Street set at 10.30am and going to security. I gave my name in but they said, 'No sorry, you're not on the list, we can't find you!' I just panicked then and security must have thought I was a crazy fan!

"By the time I got in there, I was traumatised! After that, I saw a lot of the established cast members like Helen Worth and I was so starstruck. I was like that for about a week - I couldn't look at anyone! But Georgia May Foote, who plays Katy, was like my little guardian angel. She took me under her wing and really helped me out."

Is it easy to make friends among the cast?
"Definitely. It's something that I was worried about, but I'd heard that everyone was really close like a family unit and it turns out that it's true. As an outsider you wonder whether you'll fit in and be accepted, but I think the established cast enjoy welcoming in new people and showing them around. Everyone was great and so helpful.

"Through Steph working in the Bistro, I've been able to work with everybody in the cast as every character goes in there at some point. That means you get to know everybody really well and you develop some really nice friendships."

The Peter and Tina story is Corrie's biggest at the moment. How do you feel about being involved in it?
"It's fantastic. Steph involves herself in most things anyway, but it's been brilliant to work alongside Chris Gascoyne and Michelle Keegan. It's Michelle's last storyline, so I feel really blessed to be a part of it. It's very exciting as well!"

Will Steph stay loyal to Tina by keeping her secrets?
"Yeah, she will. I think the scenes are really good at the minute because everyone is seeing a different side to Steph. Usually she's laughing, joking and giving her opinion, but since she's moved in with Tina and they've developed their friendship, people have seen a more serious and caring side to her.

"Steph really likes Tina, but once they put the gossiping aside, she wants to help her. She doesn't want Tina to be caught up in this affair. She wants Tina to sort herself out and move on. Not that Tina listens, but Steph does try her best!"

How will Steph react when she finds out that Tina's mystery man is Peter?
"When she does find out, she'll be shocked. I don't know what Steph thinks at the moment, but I don't think she's expecting it to be Peter Barlow. It'll be a shocker!"

It's no secret that Tina is being killed off in the not-too-distant future. Are you looking forward to being involved in that storyline?
"I'm looking forward to it because it'll be interesting, but it's also going to be a really sad time because Michelle will be leaving the show. I've worked with her for quite a while now, and even though I'm new, we've developed a good little friendship. It's going to be really sad as I'll miss Michelle, but it's going to be brilliant acting it all out."

Will Steph have a lot of involvement?
"I can imagine so! I don't particularly know how they're going to go about it yet, but Steph will definitely be very upset about what happens."

Is there more coming up between Steph and her brother Luke?
"I hope so. It'll be brilliant as me and Dean [Fagan, who plays Luke] get on well and he's a brilliant actor. There'll definitely be some more stuff coming up for us and I'm excited to see where they go with it."

Would you like to meet more members of the Britton family?
"Yeah, it'd be amazing to bring in the whole tribe! I've no idea what the writers have planned, but if they did bring in family members, it'd be fantastic to delve into Steph's history."

We saw comedy from Steph initially, but now she's getting more involved in the drama on the cobbles. Which do you prefer?
"I do enjoy playing Steph when she's giggly, enthusiastic and happy, but then I do enjoy the more serious side as well. It's nice to show a different side to Steph when she's being caring and she wants to give advice.

"It's nice for people to see that I'm capable of doing other things and that Steph doesn't make fun of things all the time. Her one-liners are what make her who she is, but it's nice to do other things too."

What kind of reaction have you seen from fans?
"Most people who come up to me when I'm out and about are young people, which is really flattering. A young girl said to me the other day, 'I wish I'd been at Steph's night in with Tina and Katy, it looked really fun!'

"It's great that viewers find those characters to be fun and friendly together, so people are reacting really well. People have also said, 'Get that Tina told!' I'm happy that people seem to like Steph."

Do you have a favourite scene that you've filmed so far?
"It hasn't been on screen yet so I can't say too much about it, but there's some more scenes coming up where things aren't working out for Tina, and Steph is there to pick up the pieces. There's one scene in particular that's my favourite and we worked really hard on it. I love the Tina and Steph storyline, so any scenes to do with that are always my favourite!"

Is acting what you've always wanted to do?
"It's what I wanted to do from a very young age. I remember pointing at the telly and saying that I wanted to be on it! It was only when I was at high school that I really took it seriously and thought about how I'd go about it. I signed up for a drama school, did a few years there and then got my agent.

"I auditioned a few times and slowly but surely, I ended up at Coronation Street! I don't know how that happened!"

Were you in a regular job before Corrie?
"I was still in a regular job even after I joined Corrie! I was so scared that they'd decide I wouldn't be in the show again, so I kept hold of my other job as it wasn't set in stone that I was staying. I used to be a receptionist and people would come up and say, 'Aren't you off Corrie? Why are you on reception?!' It's really nice that I can now concentrate on this full-time."

Coronation Street star Tisha Merry has said that the viewers will soon see her character Steph Britton in a new light.

Viewers were originally introduced to Steph as Katy Armstrong's friend, but she was later promoted to regular character status. She was joined in Weatherfield by her brother Luke (Dean Fagan) earlier this year.

Speaking to Inside Soap, Merry said: "Steph has involved herself a lot in other people's business so it would be nice more of her family life. I would love for her mum and dad to come in, and for them to have some kind of dark past.

"But from what I have been told, the audience will soon see Steph in a new different light."

Fagan has also backed plans for his character Luke to be Maria Connor's latest love interest, adding that the pair would work well together.

He said: "There is going to be something happening on screen soon with Luke and Maria.

"I know Maria has been through a lot recently, and I like that Luke is the kind of guy who would treat her right.

"He is a good lad. I am not sure exactly how it is going to pan out yet, but I think Luke and Maria would actually work really well together."

Gavin is the long-lost son of Michael Rodwell (Les Dennis), and he holds a secret which could potentially end his newfound romance.

"Steph is going to have a little bit of a romance," said Merry.

"It's already been said that there's a love interest coming up. It hasn't *happened on screen yet but it's going to be a fun storyline for people to watch.

"It's going to be different, and I'm *really looking forward to it."

The actress also said that the plot would take place over the Christmas period.

She said: "Hopefully, that will keep me busy for a while. I'm still really happy at Coronation Street. I love playing Steph and still can't believe that it's been two years since I first joined.

"It really has just flown by. I'm still having such a great time."

Steph Britton is going to be left devastated when she’s the victim of revenge porn.
In a shocking new storyline her ex Jamie, played by former Hollyoaks star James Atherton, will try to blackmail her into helping convince her brother Luke to return to car racing.
He threatens to publish intimate pictures if she doesn’t help him, and when Luke refuses to race for Jamie, the villain carries out his threat and x-rated pictures of Steph are posted online.
A show insider said: "The rise of revenge porn, particularly on the internet, is a very modern phenomenon and Corrie always tries to reflect what is going on in the wider society.
"We will show how it can wreck lives. Poor old Steph is an innocent party and will be drawn into a situation not of her own making, which will have a devastating impact on her.
"The emotional turmoil Steph goes through will shock viewers."

What will happen when Jamie follows up on his threats. We spoke to Tisha Merry about the nightmare Steph is about to face.

How does Steph feel when she hears that Luke is racing again?

Steph is absolutely furious - she can’t believe they are in this situation again. They’ve had problems with Luke’s racing in the past. Steph knows it’s dangerous and the last thing she wants is for her big brother to be taking part in it all again. She doesn’t want history to repeat itself.

How does the conversation develop before Luke tells her about the photos?

Luke has just finished a big car race, which he didn’t think she knew about, but Steph has found out about it and runs down to see him. She runs over and screams at him, she completely blows up at him. Steph is so angry with Luke - she feels so betrayed and let down by him because he knows how much she didn’t want him to race again and he has gone behind her back.

Steph asks him how he can do this to her again and put her through the stress and worry again. She’s pushing him and pushing him asking him why he has done this and eventually he breaks down and shouts that he has done it for her! He tells her that he had no choice because of the threat Jamie has made...

How does she feel when she hears about Jamie’s blackmail? Did she even remember that the photos were out there?

She feels sick to the stomach. It really knocks her sideways. It’s the furthest thing from her mind - she’s completely forgotten all about the photos and she could never in a million years have predicted that this would have been the situation that Luke had found himself in and that Jamie would use these pictures to his own advantage so far down the line. Steph feels disgusted.
Jamie, Steph and Luke - Coronation Street - ITV
How does she feel about Luke giving into Jamie’s demands? Does she feel guilty about the situation Luke has been put in?

Absolutely. There’s not one part of her that questions why Luke gave in to Jamie’s demands - she completely gets it. Course she knows that Luke would have felt he had no alternative than to do as Jamie had asked to protect his sister. She feels bad more than anything that Luke has had to deal with this on his own and has been compromised in this way. She feels guilty.

What happens when she goes to confront Jamie? Does she feel like she’s got through to Jamie at any point?

Jamie is ashamed. When she confronts him, he’s visibly ashamed of what he’s done and that Steph has found out about it. He tries to make excuses and she just cuts through him and tells him to listen to her. Jamie tells her that he was desperate, that he’s in debt and that he had no choice. Jamie never wanted her to find out about this - I don’t think he had any intention of doing anything with the pictures but now she’s confronted him about it and he’s really embarrassed by it. I think he still cares about her and she asks him how he could this when they were once in love and when she really trusted him. He justifies it by repeating how much in debt he is.

How does Andy react when he finds out what’s going on? Is Steph surprised by his reaction?

He’s very mad - he’s angry about the situation - not at her, but at Jamie and he’s furious about the amount of people that will have seen the pictures. Andy asks her what she was thinking?! Steph thinks he’s blaming her but he assures her he isn’t, he’s just so mad at Jamie.

When she tells Jamie to do his worst, does she really think he’ll deliver his threat? How terrified is she?

Jamie cracks a lot. When she confronts him about it and asks him how he could do this to her and Luke, his eyes fill up - he’s really broken. Steph asks him how he could even think about doing this and says she thought he cared about her. She thinks she’s broken him so she calls his bluff and tells him if he’s going to do it then he should just do it, to really see if he’s serious - but then he does. She really panics - she feels sick. I think she felt as though she’d got through to him and that he wouldn’t actually go through with it.

How does she feel knowing friends and family have seen them?

All her friends and her mum and dad are all trying to call her to ask what is going on. Her cousins are messaging her and every person that contacts her about it is like another kick in the stomach for her. Everyone is gobsmacked but nobody can really understand the turmoil she’s going through.

    Does she blame herself?

She can’t do anything about it - she can’t take what she did back or take what Jamie has done back. Steph questions how she could have been so trusting of him. She has a huge sense of regret - but at the time they were in love and she trusted him. She could never have predicted it would have turned out this way. Steph is mortified, and also sad at the way Jamie has turned out. She asks him what has happened to him? He’s a different person now. When you’re desperate you do crazy things.

How do you feel about being involved in a storyline dealing with such a current issue?

I feel really privileged to be involved in this storyline - it’s a great opportunity to be involved in such an important story. I think it’s really important to raise awareness of issues such as this. I hope people watch and have a reaction to it - because I don’t think it’s talked about a lot at the minute and people need to know how damaging revenge porn can be.

For Steph, those pictures will always be there now and she will never, ever forget this horrible ordeal. It will be with her forever - it won’t blow over in a couple of days.

I think highlighting this was a really good move and a change of legislation good. But there should be a way to remove stuff from the net
