Reports suggest the Hunger Games star died of an apparent overdose.

The 46-year-old was discovered on Sunday afternoon in the West Village area of Manhattan.

Police are currently investigating and an exact cause of death is still to be determined.

Hoffman won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the 2005 film Capote.

Speaking at the London Critics' Circle Film Awards in central London, John Hurt - who starred with Seymour Hoffman in 2003 film Owning Mahowny - said: "It's a devastating loss. His contribution was massive."

Meanwhile a number of celebrities have taken to Twitter to pay their respects to the actor.

Lord of the Rings star Sean Astin said: "I'm so sad to read about Philip Seymour Hoffman Obviously, prayers for his family and friends. He was a Pure Actor and I will miss his talent."

Actor and presenter Stephen Fry wrote: "Oh no, I've just heard the news of the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman. What a blow to the industry & most of all of course to his family."

Comedian Ricy Gervais added: "Such shocking & sad news. RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman. One of the greatest actors of a generation and a sweet, funny & humble man.

He was an incredible actor and so understated in a lot of his roles. It is such a waste of life.

The latest thing I saw him in was a late quartet which was a fantastic film.
