EastEnders is to recast the role of Mick and Linda Carter’s younger son Johnny, RadioTimes.com can exclusively reveal.
The character of Johnny has not been seen on screen since December 2014 when he departed to go travelling overseas with boyfriend Gianluca. But fans can expect Johnny to return from Italy later this year with a fresh face.
The casting process is currently under way with bosses looking for the ideal Johnny, who will soon become involved in some big stories. An EastEnders spokesperson said to RT tonight: “There are so many more stories that we wanted to tell with Johnny, so we felt that the time was right to unite the Carter family again.”
Our source added: "The Carter family quickly became one of EastEnders's most iconic families and there are lots of stories planned for them, but it felt it would be a shame if those stories had to be told without Johnny's involvement. Whoever gets the job will be landing themselves a dream role."

Actor Sam Strike, who originally played the role, left following a high profile year in Walford that saw Johnny memorably come out to publican dad Mick (Danny Dyer).
The moving moment resulted in EastEnders winning the Media Recognition prize at the 2014 Attitude Awards.
Speaking about the storyline at the time, Strike said: “I was really nervous the night it aired because you want it to look convincing and to do justice by the people that have been there and done it.
“It was a real proving ground for me because it was the first time I actually had to do any proper drama acting. I’ve had letters and Danny’s had letters saying that we’d helped people to come out and it makes things worth it.”
Since leaving EastEnders, Strike has taken on a guest role in BBC crime drama Silent Witness and will next be seen in Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel Leatherface.

Former EastEnders star Sam Strike has backed the decision to recast Johnny Carter - confirming that he wasn't ready to return as the popular character himself.

Strike spoke exclusively to Digital Spy following the news that executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins has begun casting for a new actor to take over the role.

The 22-year-old bowed out as Johnny in late 2014 after 12 months in the part, later admitting that a lack of storylines for his character had been a factor in his decision.

Speaking to Digital Spy following news of the recast, Strike commented: "I think if they want Johnny back in the show it's something they should definitely do. I wasn't ready to return any time in the near future.

"I didn't write the character, but I do feel a sense of ownership over him, like an overbearing parent. I lived with him 6 days a week over the course of a year, fighting often for what I felt was a correct portrayal, and I'm sure Dom will make sure the next actor to portray him will do the character justice."

He added: "I hope they find lots for Johnny to do and give him lots of stories, and the new actor can have the adventure with Johnny that I would've liked to have before he became stale.

"I think it's a great thing and that the character needs a facelift - and I wish whoever lands it the best of luck."

Strike received widespread praise for his portrayal of Johnny in 2014, with the character's emotional 'coming out' scene with his on-screen dad Mick (Danny Dyer) remembered particularly fondly.

The emotional scene earned EastEnders the Media Recognition Prize at the 2014 Attitude Awards, while it was also nominated for Scene of the Year at the British Soap Awards.

Since leaving EastEnders, Strike has scored a big break in the US by landing the lead role in Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel Leatherface, which is due for release later this year.

He's also filmed a part in crime film Bonded By Blood 2, and recently appeared as a guest artist in BBC One's Silent Witness.

EastEnders' Johnny Carter returns: New hunky actor Ted Reilly to play Danny Dyer's son
EastEnders are bringing back Danny Dyer's on-screen son Johnny Carter with hunky new actor Ted Reilly playing the role.
Johnny Carter, played by Sam Strike, came out as gay on the soap before leaving to “go travelling” with his boyfriend and made his last appearance in December 2014.
Now Johnny will return back on screen next month, only this time he will be played by Ted.
Ted is a rising star, having appeared in a number of London theatre productions as well as TV dramas including Call The Midwife, Casualty and Grantchester.
Ted Reilly will be playing Mick Carter's son from now on
A source close to Ted said: “He knows this is a big chance for him and he is really excited about joining the soap. Johnny was a controversial character before with lots of big storylines so he will come back onto the show with a bang.”
In January 2014, Danny Dyer has said that he received letters from fans saying they came out after the storyline which involved Dyer's on-screen son Johnny revealing that he is gay to his father.
Dyer, who plays Mick Carter, said: “It was a real positive thing. A lot of young gay men, who hadn't come out yet, they saw that scene and I was getting letters from these guys saying they came out the next day because of it.
How will Mick and Linda take their son's return?
The previous Johnny Carter, played by Sam Strike with on-screen parents, Linda Carter, Mick Carter and sister Nancy
“That's a powerful thing and I was really proud to be associated with that.“They spun it on the head for me, because obviously my perception and what people think I'm about – that I was going to react badly - and instead I just cuddled him (Johnny) and said, 'Listen, it's fine, I love you, no problem'.”
Johnny Carter is not the first EastEnders character to be played by more than one person.
Lucy Beale, Martin Fowler and Sam Mitchell are all characters played by more than one actor as they grew up in Albert Square.
Sam Strike previously played the role
EastEnders bosses confirmed a week ago they were bringing back the character Johnny Carter.
At the time a spokesman said: “There are so many more stories that we wanted to tell with Johnny, so we felt that the time was right to unite the Carter family again.
“The Carter family quickly became one of EastEnders’ most iconic families and there are lots of stories planned for them, but it felt it would be a shame if those stories had to be told without Johnny’s involvement. Whoever gets the job will be landing themselves a dream role.”

There's not long to wait before the popular character returns with a new head.

Be patient, EastEnders fans - the new Johnny Carter is coming.

Ted Reilly is taking over the role of Danny Dyer's on-screen son, and the young actor has now shared a first-look picture of him inside The Queen Vic.

"Another day at the office," he jokingly captioned the image.

Johnny will be heading back to Albert Square after spending time travelling abroad, and show chiefs apparently have some big storylines in store for him.

EastEnders' Danny-Boy Hatchard, who plays Lee Carter, recently told Digital Spy that Reilly has been "honestly fantastic".

"He's settled in like he's been there for years and he's a fantastic actor and I'm so excited about everyone seeing him on screen, honestly," Hatchard said. "It's very exciting stuff."

EastEnders bosses announced their decision to recast Johnny last month. The popular character was previously played by Sam Strike for a one-year stint from December 2013.

It's all been quiet for Johnny Carter since he returned to Walford with a new head, but now Ted Reilly has hinted there could be bigger things on the horizon for him.

Ted took over the part of Johnny earlier this year and some fans have been calling for him to start playing more of a central role in storylines again.

When we caught up with Ted at the 2016 Inside Soap Awards on Monday evening (October 3), he was staying pretty tight-lipped on Johnny's future - except to say that things could get busier soon. Well let's hope so!

"I can't really say anything because they haven't told me," he explained.

"I'm told there are some big plans and I'm excited to see them - but they're keeping a lot under wraps!"

Asked about the type of story he'd like to play, Ted added: "EastEnders has always had hard-hitting stories, so I'd like to get something that speaks to people. That's why soaps are so great, because they talk to the average person on the street."

EastEnders is currently undergoing a shake-up behind the scenes, with new boss Sean O'Connor writing out a number of characters - including Ted's on-screen brother Danny-Boy Hatchard, who plays Lee.

Kellie Bright is also taking maternity leave in the not-too-distant future, meaning that Johnny's mum Linda will be disappearing for a while too.

Ted told us: "It's sad to see Danny-Boy go - he looked after me from day one and took me under his wing, but it's the job when this sort of thing happens. Danny-Boy has got other stuff that he wants to do and I respect that.

"With Kellie, she loves her job and she's going to enjoy her break, but she'll be keen to get back. She's still filming at the moment - she's an unbelievable woman."

Discussing new boss Sean, he also revealed: "I've met Sean and he's got some amazing ideas for the show. It was very impressive to hear someone speak with such detail about what he wants the show to do.

"But it's the industry that we're in that people come and go. It's sad but it's just part of the job."

The Inside Soap Awards 2016 took place at the Hippodrome Casino in London on Monday night.
