Coronation Street producer Stuart Blackburn has revealed that he wants to bring in another older character to maintain an age balance on screen following cast exits.
Stephanie Cole left her role as Sylvia Goodwin earlier this year, while Sue Johnston will be bowing out as Gloria Price in the spring.
Blackburn told Inside Soap: "We're losing Sylvia and Gloria and they'll be much missed, so we'll be looking to get that kind of older character in.
"But you have to be careful about not deciding to cast 'another Sylvia' or 'another Blanche'. Those characters worked so well because they are both utterly unique."
Discussing other types of character who are currently missing from the cobbles, he continued: "Some of my personal favourites over the years have been people like Charlie Stubbs, Richard Hillman and Karl Munro. There's always a place for a dark, tortured soul in Corrie, so don't worry - we're on that. Keep your eyes peeled."
Blackburn also explained his decision to make big changes at the Rovers Return. Fans know that the McDonald clan will be taking charge at the pub after Stella Price decides to sell up.
He said: "It's been a massive decision to change the management at The Rovers. Stella and the Prices were absolutely great in the pub, but the story with Karl was so massive that I was terrified we'd come out the other side of murder, lies and betrayal and things would be back to normal in a month. This had to be a story with consequences."
