'EastEnders' David Witts talks Joey, Lauren plot: 'It's love'

Witts has now told Inside Soap that the bond between the pair could become very serious.

He commented: "Joey's very much under the impression that girls are lucky to be with him. He doesn't really give them much respect.

"But with Lauren, there are real feelings. For the first time in his life, he falls in love with someone - but it's a girl who's forbidden. That's karma for you!"

Lauren, Whitney and Lucy decide to team up to punish Joey following his recent behaviour. Lucy arranges to meet Joey at the park and she fools him into thinking that she's forgiven him, but then she handcuffs him to a bar in the playground! Lauren and Whitney soon join Lucy and they all enjoy their revenge, vowing to keep him there for a day.

Later, Lauren turns up to un-cuff Joey as Max seems ready to sack him for his disappearing act. Once free, Joey's cocky behaviour continues as he tells Lauren that she was jealous because he kissed Whitney, not her. A furious Lauren slaps Joey, but is there some truth in what he's saying?

Coming up on EastEnders, Joey and Lauren's romance storyline kicks off properly as they share a kiss.

The pair's chemistry comes to a head shortly after Joey (David Witts) has ended his relationship with Lucy, which leads to him moving into the Branning house after packing his bags at the Beale residence.

Later that day, Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) is feeling depressed with her life, so she heads to the R&R to drown her sorrows. As Lauren knocks back the booze, a protective Joey watches her like a hawk the whole night.

When Joey sees some boys get too close to Lauren at the club, he immediately throws them out and walks his drunken cousin home.

Offering some advice as they arrive back, Joey suggests that Lauren should change her life if she is so unhappy and even offers to move out, explaining that he doesn't want to be another thing that Lauren runs away from.

As the pair look at each other, there is a clear attraction between them and Lauren moves in for a kiss…

EastEnders star David Witts has said that his character Joey Branning will find life "really hard" after he is forced to dump his cousin Lauren.

The pair have recently fallen for each other, but Joey calls the romance off next week after being blackmailed by his interfering dad Derek (Jamie Foreman).

After a drunken Lauren causes a huge car accident while running away with Joey in upcoming episodes, Derek suggests that the only way she can avoid a prison sentence is by claiming that sober Joey was the driver.

Joey goes along with the deception to help Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa), but is horrified when Derek later threatens to tell the police the truth unless he gets his own way.

Witts told Soaplife: "Joey must either move in with Derek and be a respectful and loving son, or dump Lauren. If Joey takes either of those options, Derek won't tell the police that Lauren was driving the car.

"Joey's love for Lauren is massive, but not quite as massive as his hatred for Derek. He decides to become the villain and lie that he never loved her. He'll take the flack because that will make it easier for her to move on without him."

He continued: "It will be really hard as he has to keep making out to Lauren that he's not interested. She keeps trying to contact him but he doesn't return her calls."

Witts insisted that Joey would be making a mistake if he told Lauren the truth about Derek's blackmail.

He explained: "She's very headstrong and she'd say that she doesn't care about getting into trouble with the law. It would all end in tears. Everyone would find out as Lauren's the sort of person who'd blurt everything out, and it would cause even more of a mess. Joey very much thinks he's doing the right thing."

EastEnders continues tomorrow (November 22) at 7.30pm on BBC One.
