    Peaky Blinders

Cillian Murphy has been cast in the new BBC Two drama Peaky Blinders.

The Dark Knight star will take the lead role in the new six-part gangster drama which was written by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises) and will be directed by Otto Bathurst (Black Mirror).

The series follows Tommy (Murphy), a ruthless mobster whose family control the "lawless post-war slum neighbourhoods" of Birmingham in 1919.

Tommy's family are known as the 'Peaky Blinders' due to their practice of sewing razor blades into the peaks of their caps, reports Deadline.

Tommy finds his leadership under threat when a Belfast police chief arrives and challenges the crime family's reign.

Peaky Blinders will begin shooting in September and will air on BBC Two in 2013.

An epic gangster family saga boasting a distinguished cast that includes Cillian Murphy (Inception, The Wind That Shakes The Barley, 28 Days Later), Sam Neill (The Tudors, The Piano, Jurassic Park), Helen McCrory (Hugo, Harry Potter, The Queen), Annabelle Wallis (Snow White and the Huntsman, The Tudors), Paul Anderson (The Firm), Iddo Goldberg (Secret Diary of a Call Girl) and Charlie Creed- Miles (Nil By Mouth, Wild Bill). Writer and dub poet Benjamin Zephaniah also joins the cast.

Created by Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things and Eastern Promises), the story begins in 1919 in the lawless slum neighbourhoods of post war Birmingham. Returning soldiers, newlyminted revolutionaries and criminal gangs all fight for survival in an industrial landscape gripped by economic upheaval. Guns smuggled home from the trenches find their way onto the streets and become lethal currency. As Churchill mobilises his Special Branch forces, illegal bookmakers make fortunes in speak-easy betting shops and traumatised infantrymen drink away their shell-shock in riotous ale houses.

There is still a gentler city at the fringes, where gypsies and canal boatmen deal horses and tell fortunes but sitting at the top of this industrial jungle are the extended Shelby family, whose many brothers and sisters, cousins and uncles, make up the fiercest gang of all, the ‘Peaky Blinders’. Named for their practise of sewing razor blades into the peaks of their caps, the Peaky Blinders make their money from off track betting, protection and robbery.

Peaky Blinders will return for a second series in 2014, it was announced today (October 25).

The BBC has confirmed that the period drama - which follows the lives of gang members who control the streets of 1920s post-war Birmingham - has been recommissioned for a further six-part run.

"I am so pleased we will be able to continue to tell this story of a working class family living through extraordinary times in an extraordinary way," said series creator and writer Steven Knight.

"The 'Peaky Blinders' will march on to many surprising places and fight astonishing battles as the 1920s begin to roar."

Those behind the BBC Two show have revealed that the forthcoming series will see the Shelby family expand their crime empire, while maintaining control over their Birmingham heartland.

Gang leader Tommy (played by Cillian Murphy) also looks set to be undermined by sinister forces in his attempts to make the black market business legitimate, but his ascent into 1920s high society will be aided by his criminal credentials.

"We've been thrilled by the passionate responses Peaky Blinders has been getting from viewers all over the country," explained executive producer Caryn Mandabach.

"Like them, I can't wait for Thomas Shelby's story to continue."

Filming on the project is scheduled to begin early next year.

Murphy's co-stars Sam Neill and Helen McCrory are expected to return, though viewers were left wondering about the fate of Annabelle Wallis's character Grace following the dramatic series finale.
