Alan Halsall has paid tribute to his late co-star Bill Tarmey at the National Television Awards.

Halsall, who picked up the gong for 'Best Serial Drama Performance', told reporters backstage that he was wearing Tarmey's watch on the request of his widow.

"I'm sure he'll be having a fag on me," he said.

Halsall went on to pay tribute to his former co-star, who passed away in November.

"He gave me 15 years of advice," he said. "He guided me literally from the very start of my career on Coronation Street. He was such a huge, huge influence... he was like a second dad on the street, if you like. It was a huge influence.

"He'd be laughing at this right now, he really would. He'd be laughing. He used to say, 'None of that bloody acting!' so he'll be laughing his head off that I've won this tonight."

Halsall also revealed that his win took a while to sink in, saying: "In all honesty, it was just shock.

"My wife kept saying, 'Have you prepared a speech?' and I said no. I was in a strong category and any of the other three would have been deserving of it, so I really didn't hold much hope.

"When they read my name I was more shocked than I was happy... but I'm happy now!"

Halsall recently revealed that he would love to match Tarmey's 31 years on Coronation Street.

EastEnders star David Witts has revealed that he is "truly grateful" for his National Television Award.

The actor triumphed in the 'Best Newcomer' category, beating Emmerdale's Liam Fox, Coronation Street's Natalie Gumede and Hollyoaks' Joseph Thompson.

However, Witts admitted that he didn't know how to answer when reporters backstage asked how it feels to win.

"I'm not entirely sure I can answer that quite yet because I'm still in a bit of a daze," he said. "It's mad, because you know what? I didn't expect to win. I really didn't.

"On my way here with my girlfriend, she said, 'You really should make a list of some people to thank', and I was like, 'Oh, really?' I did and then this happened, but it's just crazy."

Witts confessed that he was "very nervous" about attending the awards but added: "It's an amazing experience and I'm truly grateful for this."

The actor, who joked that he would celebrate with a single G&T as he had to work the next morning, also said he had a good run leading up to the awards.

"I think I've been very lucky - a lot of it is luck," said Witts. "I got gifted with a wonderful storyline and leading up to these awards for the past four or five months now, I've been really busy, and it's been a really busy character.

"I think it's a lot down to that... I've been able to showcase an awful lot, whereas some people aren't necessarily that lucky."

Witts also admitted that it is nice to be honoured for his acting skills rather than his looks, saying: "It is obviously lovely to be recognised for [working], because it's easy to lose perspective and start to forget what you came into it for. Actually, I started this because I did an audition, not because I'm standing smiling.

"I mean, [being called sexy is] very flattering... It's a very odd term to use, I think, 'sexy'. I've never used the word 'sexy' to describe anyone else."

Earlier this month, Witts hinted that he is not looking to stay on EastEnders on a long-term basis.

Thanks for claryfying that. Perdy, I turned the tv on and saw the bloke who plays Joey Branning clutching a trophy and thought they'd introduced a new category "Best portrayal of a plank of wood!"
