I read in the Soaplife magazine that the square will be talking about it for years after, so even if people find out the truth then we won't be hearing the end of it any time soon

EastEnders hardman Phil Mitchell embarks on a desperate attempt to protect son Ben next week after the troubled teenager kills Heather Trott.

As first reported earlier this year, Heather (Cheryl Fergison) will soon meet a tragic end as Ben (Joshua Pascoe) turns violent at her flat, believing that she's responsible for DCI Marsden discovering that he lied about Phil and Stella.

Heather's final scene sees Ben lash out at her in a moment of fear and desperation, picking up a picture frame and hitting her hard over the side of the head with it.

As Ben and Jay (Jamie Borthwick) watch on in horror, the mum-of-one then falls backwards, hits her head on her kitchen worktop and is left lying dead on the floor.

When Phil stumbles upon the disturbing scene after being released from prison, he decides that he has to protect his twisted son and goes all-out to conceal the crime.

Thinking quickly, Phil fakes a burglary at Heather's home and takes away all evidence which links to Ben and Jay. He's also forced to leave Heather's young son George lying asleep in his bed at the flat.

Phil then comes up with a cover story for Ben and Jay, ordering them to claim that they've been busy working on a car at The Arches all night. Additionally, he arranges for the boys to burn their clothes, while the all-important picture frame - which contains a happy photo of Heather and Shirley - is dumped in the canal.

However, it seems that Ben is already scheming as he deliberately conceals Jay's hoodie, not wanting it to be destroyed with the other items of clothing…

When Shirley (Linda Henry) later finds Heather's dead body at the flat, a police investigation is launched - and Ben and Jay are among those who need to be quizzed to eliminate them from the enquiry.

While Ben seems eerily calm, a tormented Jay is traumatised by the entire situation. As the pair are led away for separate questioning, can they really maintain their lies?

To make matters worse for Phil, the police are also starting to suspect that the burglary at Heather's flat was faked. Is his cover-up already in jeopardy?

EastEnders airs Heather's dramatic exit and its fallout all next week on BBC One.

    Monday

Heather is keen to make amends with Shirley following recent events, admitting that she can't get married without her. However, a stubborn Shirley insists that their friendship is over. Soon afterwards, Ben becomes concerned that Heather may have overheard the truth about his false police statement, as she is present at the Beale house on cleaning duties when he chats to Ian about the situation. Ben confronts Heather as he wants to know how much she heard, before leaving her stunned by admitting that he's been lying about Phil all along.

Later, Ben's worst nightmare comes true as DCI Marsden turns up at the Beale house, wanting to clarify some points in his statement. Assuming that Heather has spoken to the police about his deceit, Ben feels backed into a corner and admits to Marsden that he was lying. Marsden is forced to formally arrest Ben for perverting the course of justice.

Meanwhile, Andrew isn't happy when Heather goes looking for Shirley, and he fears that she will always come before him. The couple have been considering eloping, so Andrew tells Heather that he's leaving Walford and he'll wait in The Vic until 6pm if she wants to join him. When Heather does find her best friend, Shirley cruelly rejects her once again.

After returning to her flat, Heather receives a visit from a furious Ben, who wrongly believes that she informed Marsden of his lies. Jay turns up shortly afterwards and tries to calm things, but the situation escalates as Ben starts ransacking the flat in his rage, looking for the money that Dot gave to Heather so that he can use it to run away before Phil is released. When Heather tries to stop him, Ben lashes out in a moment of fear and desperation - grabbing a picture frame and smashing it hard across the side of her head. Tragedy strikes as she falls backwards and hits her head on the kitchen worktop. Lying lifeless on the floor, Heather is dead…

Elsewhere, Shirley promises to wait for Phil as she visits him in prison and is later delighted to hear that he'll be released, while Mandy's ex-boyfriend Alex is hoping to win her back.

    Tuesday

Jay is terrified following Heather's death and flees from the flat. Soon afterwards, Phil turns up ready for a showdown with Ben, but he's left stunned by the sight of Heather's lifeless body. When Phil hears what happened, he starts to call 999 and warns Ben that he could go down for life over this. However, when Ben breaks down in tears and begs his father to help him, Phil comes up with a plan.

Phil starts ransacking Heather's flat and smashes the front door in from the outside, wanting it to look like a burglary. Leaving George asleep in his bed as there is no other option, Phil then tracks a traumatised Jay down at The Arches. He suggests a cover story for the boys, ordering them to claim they were working on a car together at the time of Heather's death. Continuing the cover-up, Phil sends Ben to the canal to dispose of the murder weapon, before setting fire to the lads' clothes. However, Ben is jealous of the tenderness between the pair and deliberately conceals Jay's hoodie…

That night, the scheming trio are forced to conceal their true feelings throughout a 'welcome home Phil' dinner back at the Mitchell house. Remembering that Heather's phone was off the hook at the flat, Phil checks Shirley's mobile and is sickened to hear a voicemail message that Heather was leaving her best friend before Ben turned up. Hearing that the recording also features Heather's last moments, a disgusted Phil deletes the message.

Later, Shirley verbally attacks Ben - still not ready to forgive his recent lies. Phil is also feeling tormented, realising that he's effectively facing a choice between Shirley and Ben as he considers whether he can really go ahead with this cover-up. However, he soon realises that he has to put his son first. Shortly afterwards, Shirley starts to feel guilty over the harsh way she treated Heather earlier that day. Deciding to invite her over to the celebration, Shirley heads out to Heather's flat…

    Wednesday

As the celebration of Phil's release continues at the Mitchell house, Ben points out to his father that they'll need to get back to Heather's flat to explain the presence of their fingerprints. The opportunity soon presents itself when a devastated Shirley arrives back at the house, holding George in her blood-stained arms.

Phil, Ben, Jay and Billy all then head over to Heather's flat and an ambulance is called. An emotional Shirley soon joins the four men and sobs uncontrollably as the paramedics arrive and confirm Heather's death.

Next to arrive at the scene is DS Crisp, who wants to talk to the witnesses. Initial questioning takes place, but Crisp then explains that they'll all need to be taken to the police station. Once there, they'll have DNA samples taken from their clothing in order to eliminate them from the investigation. The news of Heather's death then begins to spread as Phil shares the news with Patrick, Rose and Roxy. Andrew also finally turns up, and he's overwhelmed with grief for Heather when he hears what's happened.

Later, at the police station, everyone's clothes are taken away as previously advised. Just as Ben and Jay are led away for separate questioning, Shirley tells Phil that she overheard the police chatting and they believe the burglary was faked. Can Phil, Ben and Jay maintain their lies?

    Thursday

Phil waits with a devastated Shirley for news on Jay and Ben's interviews as they attempt to stick with the alibi created by Phil.

Meanwhile, a protective Rose lies to the police about Andrew's whereabouts. Dot and Cora are devastated to find out about Heather's demise.

Later, Andrew is next to face police inquiry and he begins to panic when Detective Crisp reveals he knows all about his bad temper.
