    Ep 6/8

    Sunday 3 February
    9.00-10.00pm
    BBC ONE

As the dock strike of August ’89 takes grip of the city, the killing of a Jewish anarchist leads Reid and the team into the merciless chicanery of the British government’s fight against international terrorism.
The order from Reid’s superiors is to drop the case, but he can smell something afoot, particularly when Deborah Goren appears at the station vouching for the dead man’s character. Jackson is sent undercover at the escalating Dock Strikes, while Drake is on the other side, policing against what he considers justified protest. As Reid digs deeper, he discovers signs of Special Branch and Russian agitators pulling strings on his own manor – while the approaching anniversary of a great tragedy in his life tips his personal life into crisis.

Ripper Street is to return for a second series on BBC One.

The period crime thriller - created by Richard Warlow - will air eight new 60-minute episodes in 2014.

Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn and Adam Rothenberg star in the Sunday night drama, which is set in London's Whitechapel just months after Jack the Ripper's reign of terror.

"Quality and ambition run through Ripper Street, from Richard Warlow's original scripts, the incredible cast and the captivating direction," said the BBC's controller of drama commissioning Ben Stephenson.

"All combine to create a period series with a modern and gripping edge that will return for a second series in 2014."

Ripper Street launched with 7.89m viewers on December 30, with the first episode drawing nearly 90 complaints due to its graphic content.

Series star Macfadyen - who plays Inspector Reid - later spoke out to defend the show, praising its "colourful", "grimy" style.

Ripper Street's first series continues this Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.

Danny Cohen and Ben Stephenson confirm that eight more episodes of the hit drama series Ripper Street will return in 2014.

Made by Tiger Aspect Productions and Lookout Point in association with BBC America, the gripping series currently airing on Sunday nights is attracting big audiences with a consolidated average so far of 7.1million/22.9 per cent share.

With stellar performances from the three leads Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn and Adam Rothenberg, writer Richard Warlow has created an extraordinary series set in the East End of London in 1889, during the aftermath of the 'Ripper' murders.

Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning says: “Quality and ambition run through Ripper Street, from Richard Warlow’s original scripts, the incredible cast and the captivating direction. All combine to create a period series with a modern and gripping edge that will return for a second series in 2014.”

Creator and writer Richard Warlow says: "I am enormously grateful to have been given the opportunity to return to 'H' Division once more and will be working tirelessly to ensure that those who have joined us each week will find ever more compelling crime-fighting thrills down on Ripper Street the second time around. The series will move forward into the 1890s: the death rattle of a century coming to a close, the labour pains of a modern world on the rise. It is this sense of climax and calamity that, week by week, our heroes will confront with conviction and heroism."

Will Gould, Head of Drama Tiger Aspect Productions says: “We’re absolutely thrilled that Richard Warlow will be taking us on another unforgettable walk on the wild side of 1890s Whitechapel. Series two will again explore the dark and extraordinary secrets of the Victorian world, and will further mine the hopes and hidden complexities of our heroes.”

Simon Vaughan, Lookout Point says: "Partnering with BBC America was always our ideal scenario and it has proven to be a wonderful decision. They have given the series an amazing launch in America and we are delighted to be moving into series two together."

The second series was commissioned by Danny Cohen, Controller of BBC One, and Ben Stephenson, Controller of BBC Drama Commissioning. Ripper Street is executive produced for Tiger Aspect (an Endemol Company) by Will Gould, Richard Warlow and for Lookout Point by Simon Vaughan. Polly Hill executive produces for the BBC. Shooting will commence in the spring for transmission in 2014. The series is distributed internationally by BBC Worldwide.

Jackson is in custody, facing the noose for a murder he never committed.
Drake is despondent, his personal life a shambles. And Reid is adrift – his team in pieces, Leman Street in mourning, and his heart torn between two women. The suspected kidnapping of Rose, however, offers cause for Reid to try and assemble his men and crack the white slavery ring they find operating in their midst. But as the clues accumulate, Reid is gripped by a growing obsession that the man he hunts may have personal knowledge of the terrible secret Reid nurtures regarding his own past.
