Part 1 -Alternate Christmas Ending


Zoë: I can’t,

She turned to Den

Den: Yes you can tell them

Sharon: Tell us what?

Den: Come on Zoë; tell them what you just told me

Zoë: I’m, I’m Pregnant

They all went quiet; Vicki turned and looked at Chrissie, who then looked at Dennis and Sharon staring in to each other’s eyes, longing for things to go smoothly, just this once.

Dennis then turned to face Zoë, he then broke the silence

Dennis: Is it mine?

Chrissie: huh

She walked over and put her arm round Zoe

Chrissie: Dennis, you really think she’d tell us all this if it weren’t yours?

Dennis: I don’t know, could you?

Zoë burst into tears

Zoë: No

Dennis: No what?

Zoë: No I couldn’t <she gave a side wards glance to Den, who stared right back at her, and nodded> Yes it is yours

She began crying again

Chrissie wrapped her arms round Zoë

Chrissie: There, there babe, it’ll be Ok

Sharon: Congratulations, I guess <sarcastically>

Den: Princess, there’s no need for that.

Sharon: Your right dad, there’s not so I take it back but well done

Zoe: well done for what?

Sharon: Well your timing is perfect, Dennis is just about to leave you and you spring this bombshell on him, Coincidence?


Vicki: Sharon, of course its not a coincidence, Zoë didn’t know Dennis was leaving its not like she’s just told us to keep Dennis here, Right?

Zoë started crying again

Dennis: For Gods Sake stop crying, your acting like a baby yourself

Zoë stopped crying, but snivelled

Dennis was sitting on a chair, looking in to space.

Dennis: How far?

Zoë: How far what?

Dennis: How far between here and Angie’s Den,?How far gone are you?

Zoë: Um, not sure, a few weeks tops.

Dennis: What and you just decide to tell me now

Zoe: I didn’t know

Dennis :what so its just an inkling?

Zoe: no course not

Sharon: So when did you find out then, when where you planning to tell us?

Zoe: Us, tell us?

Sharon: that’s what I said

Chrissie: Sharon

Zoe: I wasn’t planning to tell You, I was going to tell Dennis tonight
<looks at chrissie> Like a late Christmas Present

Zoe starts crying into Chrissie’s arms

Dennis:Stop crying, for goodness sake

Den: Dennis, theres no need for that, can’t you see the poor girls upset, I mean you were gonna leave her

Sharon: Gonna, we’re still going Dad, aren’t we Dennis?

Sharon tugs on Dennis’s Arm

Sharon: Dennis?

Dennis Huh?I don’t know this isn’t what I expected, its not easy Sharon, I mean she is carrying my child

Sharon: What, and I’m not,

Dennis: I didn’t say that

Sharon: You didn’t need to

Dennis: Sharon

Sharon: NO, I understand I can’t have kids, she can, so you might as well stay,

Sharon runs off

Dennis: Sharon

Vicki: No, I’ll go

Vicki follows

Dennis paces around for a bit then sits down

Dennis: so when did you find out?

Zoe: Yesterday, I was late and I felt a bit ruff so I took a test

Dennis: Just a test, so its not definite?

Zoe: No but…

Vicki walks in
They all look at her

Vicki: Sharon wants to be on her own

Dennis: <turns back to Zoe> So you might not be pregnant?

Chrissie: You almost seem happy at the idea?

Dennis: No, but is true?

Zoe: Yes, I mean I think I know my own body Dennis.

Vicki: Yeh course, because you get all that morning sickness stuff

Chrissie: Yeh, thanks for that Vick’s, Have you been sick babe?

Zoe: Yeh, this morning and a bit before but I think that was just shock

Chrissie:Aww, poor babe, Does anyone else know?

Zoe: Apart from the chemist who sold me the test

Dennis: Zo’ this is serious,

Zoe: Who’s Laughing?

Dennis- well I’m certainly not laughing

Zoe- you think I planned this do you think I wanted a baby

Dennis- how the hell should I know like Sharon said it’s pretty convenient

Chrissie- Dennis leave her alone haven’t you done enough

Dennis- enough all I ever did was fall in love I didn’t set out to hurt anyone

Den looked at his son with disgust and contempt

Zoe- only you didn’t love me

The tears began to flow again

Dennis- no I didn’t I’m not even going to pretend I did I can’t I love Sharon

Zoe- but we’re going to be a family

Dennis- based on what a £6.99 pregnancy test if you think I’m giving up Sharon for that you’ve got another thing coming

Zoe- but…

Dennis- no buts I’m going to find Sharon

He turned and stormed out

How about Twisted Lies or Christmas Blues I’m running out of ideas

Sharon sat on the bench in the middle of Albert Square her life was now in tatters a baby it was ruined her and Dennis were over the minute the words spilt out of Zoe’s mouth

Sharon felt a hot tear scorch her cheeks as she tried to imagine life without Dennis one word sprung to mind EMPTY

Her eyes fixated on the ground slowly pulled themselves up as a familiar shadow fell across her

Dennis- Sharon

Sharon- she’s having your baby

Dennis- I know but…

Sharon- no buts it’s over

Dennis stumbled slightly as the words came out over it couldn’t be
