A quote I just found sums it up well: "Attempting to achieve their goals by cunning, scheming, and unscrupulous methods."

Named after a historical figure called Machiavelli.

Carol prepares to end it all
Airs on Monday, October 25 2010 20:00 BST on BBC One

Dressed in black, Carol takes a delivery of flowers but soon dumps them in the bin when she sees they are from Sonia, who is not attending Billie's funeral. On seeing Bianca and the kids dressed up, Carol tells them that they are not wanted at the service. Later, as the hearse pulls up, Billie's mates from his old gang approach from all directions and Connor steps forward, telling Carol they are there to pay respect. Alerted by the commotion, Bianca, Ricky, Ryan, Jack and Max create a barricade protecting Carol, so Connor and the rest of the gang soon leave. Emotional, Carol demands to be left alone and everyone is stunned when she turns and climbs into a car driven by Billie's father, Alan along with his gran, Blossom.

Still being followed by the gang, Alan is thrown when Carol shouts to stop the car, saying she can't go through with it. Alan and Blossom gently support her as she collapses, grief overwhelming her. Later, back from the cremation, Carol is mortified when she misreads Alan's signals, leaning in for a kiss with him. Alan backs away and heads over to Dot's, leaving Carol on her own. Seizing a bottle of alcohol from Pat's bar, a resolute Carol sits down with a notepad and pen. She pours herself a large drink and starts popping pills out of a blister pack, preparing to join her son at peace...

Meanwhile, in the market, Stacey and Kat chat happily as they push rails of clothes towards the stall. Seeing Whitney's stall is empty, Kat moves in despite a warning from the market inspector. Kat's day improves further when Alfie calls her over to the pub for the grand unveiling. Kat is overwhelmed and passers-by cheer when The Vic is revealed renovated in all its glory. Stacey is upset when she realises Kat will be leaving her to start work at The Vic tomorrow. Later, however, Kat and Alfie are thrilled when Tracey and Stacey both agree to be their barmaids.

Elsewhere, Dot leads a prayer with the Brannings; Vanessa receives divorce papers from Harry; Lauren storms out of the house in frustration after complaining that nobody ever talks about Bradley; and during an argument with Harry, Vanessa hisses that he is not the father of their daughter Jodie.

An anguished Carol sleeps with Connor
Airs on Tuesday, October 26 2010 19:30 BST on BBC One

Alone and transfixed on the pills in front of her, Carol knocks the tumbler of alcohol back in one before beginning to write a letter addressed to Bianca. Awash with silent tears, Carol moves the note to one side once it is finished, before closing her eyes and bringing the first pill to her lips. However, suddenly she is snapped out of it by some loud banging on the front door. Carol walks towards the banging and shouts for the caller to go away. Realising she must get on with it before being distracted again, Carol purposefully strides back into the kitchen and grabs a handful of pills. About to neck the lot, Billie's friend Connor bursts through the back door, and Carol's pills scatter everywhere.

Unaware of what Carol is planning, Connor empties Billie's possessions over the floor and yells at Carol for banning him from the funeral. Calm and reminiscent, Carol picks up Billie's things, telling Connor what a cute kid he used to be and jokes about the boys growing up together. Disconcerted, Connor turns to leave but when he notices the pills, he sits down opposite Carol, who admits she can't cope. Connor downs a drink and sits beside Carol, who is overwhelmed with anguish. They break down and in each other's arms, Connor's soft kiss leads them to sleep together. Panicked by Bianca and Jack entering, Connor sneaks out of the back door and while Carol takes a shower, Bianca is shocked to read the suicide note.

Meanwhile, at Dot's, the disjointed family and friends make small talk, unaware of the events unfolding across the Square. Everyone is surprised that Carol hasn't returned and Dot unexpectedly bursts into tears and is comforted by her loved ones. Most of the guests eventually depart, however Max is outraged when a furious Lauren lets rip at him and Dot, telling them that Billie deserved a better send-off. Aware that Lauren is still upset about Bradley, a desperate Max secretly tells her that Bradley didn't murder Archie. Utterly bewildered, Lauren asks her father who the murderer really is…

Elsewhere, Alfie hires Jean to cook the burgers on the opening night at The Vic; Harry accuses Vanessa of lying about Jodie not being his daughter but is heartbroken to realise that she's telling the truth; and Stacey and Kat flog tickets to the builders for the grand opening of the pub.

    A vengeful Janine targets Lily
Airs on Thursday, October 28 2010 19:30 BST on BBC One

Janine wakes and is delighted to discover Ryan cooking a birthday breakfast for her, wearing just an apron over his boxers. Ryan promises her an exciting day, but he jumps out of bed when he receives a text message. Ryan then tells Janine that he's off to get some more bubbly and will be back in bed soon. In reality, however, Ryan heads off to the café, where Stacey asks him to accompany her to the town hall to get Lily's birth certificate changed. When Ryan returns home, he continues to lie about where he's been and soon disappears again, leaving with Stacey and Lily to change the birth certificate. Later, Janine sees Kat and bites her lip when Kat bitchily asks if Ryan and Stacey are back from their outing.

Pat can't believe Janine's nerve when she turns up and persuades Pat to take her out to lunch as birthday treat. At Argee Bhajee, Janine tells Pat that Ryan is out with Stacey on her birthday and vows that she will get her revenge. Ryan soon walks into the restaurant looking for her, and when Janine confronts him about where he's been, Ryan lies and presents her with a necklace he has bought her. Janine smiles, covering her discontent at his blatant lie and Pat's suspicions grow when Janine excitedly tells Ryan they are going to a party being held by Kat and Alfie at the Slaters'. That night, Janine and Ryan arrive, and as Ryan makes his way through the party, Janine secretly heads upstairs. Menacing, Janine stands over the baby's cot with her cold eyes fixed on Lily...

Meanwhile, at Max's, Lauren is belligerent with her father and says that if he knows Bradley didn't kill Archie, he must also know who did. Unsure as to what to say, Max is saved when Carol enters asking if she can move back in with him. Carol storms out when Max declines and he turns back to Lauren, who also leaves slamming the door behind her. Jack is taken aback when Lauren visits him in the club telling him about the allegations that Max is making. Jack tells her to let it go and Lauren believes him when he says Max is only trying to protect her.

Elsewhere, Carol lies to Bianca about her suicide note but they later have a heart-to-heart when Bianca realises that her mum really was planning to take her own life; Billy becomes optimistic over his love life following a phone call from Julie; Carol moves in with Glenda; and Jay has a spring in his step when he successfully flirts with Lauren.

Janine, Ryan and Lily face serious danger
Airs on Friday, October 29 2010 20:00 BST on BBC One

Unseen and clutching Lily, Janine makes her way downstairs at the Slaters' and walks out into the night. Minutes later, Pat is surprised when Janine shows up asking for money. Janine tells her that she needs a loan so that she and Ryan can go on a short trip away, but Pat tells her that she doesn't have any money to give. When a plan to steal her purse doesn't work, Janine pockets Ricky's car keys before frantically throwing clothes into a bag back at the flat. Meanwhile, enjoying fun and games at the party, Stacey flirts with Ryan and he chases her out into the front garden, trying to soak her with water. Across the Square, Janine watches as the pair collapse with laughter.

On seeing his wife, Ryan heads over to the flat and is baffled when Janine tells him they're going away for a couple of nights and she has packed a bag for him. As Janine drives them away from Walford, Ryan is horrified when he realises Lily is in the back of the car. Ryan demands that they go home, but a crazed Janine shouts that she has their passports and they're never going back. Janine tells Ryan that she wants them to start a new life in France, but he screams at her to stop the car. Janine does as she is told, but purposely stops on a level crossing. Switching the engine off, Janine loses it with Ryan and asks who is it he wants - her or Stacey?

Stationary on the level crossing, Ryan tells Janine he loves her and when he frantically asks her to move the car, a shouting match ensues. Ryan gets out demanding he and Janine switch places, but she refuses to open her door. Suddenly, Ryan rushes back to his side of the car when bells start to ring and the lights on the crossing start to flash. The barriers rapidly close, and Janine turns the key in the ignition. As Lily starts to cry, Ryan and Janine stare at each other in terror - the car won't start…

EastEnders star Lindsey Coulson has explained why her grieving character Carol Jackson ends up making another big mistake in next week's episodes.

After returning home from Billie's cremation in next Tuesday's edition of the Walford soap, Carol finds herself comforted by her late son's best friend Connor before heading to bed with him, despite the previous ill-feeling between the pair. The plot twist was first revealed at the weekend.

Speaking to Inside Soap, Coulson admitted: "Carol's crossing a major boundary because Connor was Billie's friend in his gang, so she hated him. But she feels she's got nothing left to lose at this point."

The actress continued: "It's very primal. I thought 'Whoa!' when I read the scripts. I have an 18-year-old daughter, so for me it's like, 'Don't go there, Carol!'.

"For her, though, this is a brief moment where she doesn't have to think about Billie's death. It's not even lovely sex - it happens in a fit of loss and grief."

Coulson recently said that she is keen to see Carol develop more friendships on Albert Square in the aftermath of her devastating loss.
