THE new series of The Walking Dead will be the biggest and bloodiest yet this autumn.

That’s the promise from zombie show creator Robert Kirkman. While fans eagerly await the third series, we got a sneak peek at the first episode as newcomer Michonne (Danai Gurira, 34) fends off some of the bloodthirsty walkers.

Kirkman says a lot more money has been pumped into the US franchise – meaning more blood, gore and violent deaths.

He said: “I think you might see a few more dollars on the screen in the third season. It’s gonna be bigger. “The violence and horrific deaths kind of come naturally in the writers’ room.”

Kirkman added: “I’m excited about everything. There are new characters and there’s a new tone. “There are characters that people don’t know about that are coming, which is really exciting.”

Top British actor David Morrissey, 48, will play The Governor, a new villain who will cause chaos for the original survivors.

The second series ended with Rick (Andrew Lincoln, 38) and his gang fleeing the farm after it was invaded by walkers.

Kirkman says the new series will pick up in the thick of the action as they are desperately fighting for survival.

He said: “It’s going to be intense. There is an escalation that began at the end of the second season and there’s not any kind of drop-off.

“It gets a little bit bigger and a little bit crazier moving into the introduction of the Governor and all the new elements. It’s going to be a fun ride.”

The Walking Dead is set to return to Channel 5 soon.

Season three left the show on a cliffhanger finale as the Governor (David Morrissey) escaped.

Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick Grimes on the show, has promised a "deeper, darker season".

Co-star Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie Greene, added: "There's this wonderful slow burn to this season that really, really catches you off guard when something happens, because what we get this season that I don't think we've had as much of is very specific deep character development.

"Where we go off on these little loops into these characters' lives and then you're just caught from the side with the horror."
