Coronation Street star Samia Smith has explained that her character Maria Connor faces a "horrible" dilemma after Frank Foster tries to sexually assault her in a forthcoming storyline.

As first revealed in reports last month, Maria is to suffer a terrifying ordeal when she visits the businessman's home to help clinch a deal for Underworld boss Carla - only for Frank to take advantage of the situation in a disturbing fashion.

Speaking to All About Soap, Smith explained: "She's absolutely terrified. He starts groping her all over and has his hand up her thigh. He basically tries to rape her but she manages to struggle out of his grip and runs from the house screaming and petrified."

In the aftermath of the frightening experience, Maria struggles with the prospect of reporting Frank (Andrew Lancel) to the police because she knows Underworld is struggling and his business is vital.

Smith continued: "Carla wants her to go straight to the police, but Maria knows that if she does, the factory will be in financial trouble and everyone will lose their jobs.

"Maria doesn't want to be responsible for everyone being out of work. It's a horrible, no-win situation for Maria and she just doesn't know what to do."

The storyline begins on screen early next month.

Maria's dark new storyline begins in early March when she heads to Frank Foster's home to help bag an important contract for Underworld.

After being informed by Carla that business is bad at the factory, Maria is well aware that the stakes are high and her private meeting with Frank is vital.

However, when Maria arrives at Frank's, she's stunned to realise that he has more than just business on his mind. As they're on the verge of agreeing the deal, Frank leans in to kiss Maria and she rejects him - but he seems unable to accept this and a frightening encounter follows.

Speaking in a recent interview about the plot, Maria's portrayer Samia Smith commented: "She's absolutely terrified. He starts groping her all over and has his hand up her thigh. How will Maria cope in the aftermath of the incident? And how will this affect the business deal and the fate of the factory?

Steve fills Becky in on the situation with the Alahans, explaining that he has taken the blame for stealing and giving back the money. At the same time, the Alahans re-open the shop and debate whether they should go to the police.

Later, however, Becky tells Dev and Sunita the truth - she stole their money and Steve is merely protecting her. As she tries to explain that she needed the money to buy Max from Kylie, how will the Alahans react?

Meanwhile, Eileen worries when she can't find Owen's paperwork. She and Julie realise that Owen must have broke into the house and removed the papers. When Eileen tackles Owen over the matter, how will he react?

Elsewhere, business is bad at the factory but Carla thinks Maria could be everyone's saving grace when Frank comes in to discuss a possible contract and takes a shine to Maria. Also today, David reveals that his girlfriend Candy will be arriving on Friday.

28th Feb 8-30pm

Out on the street, the residents watch on as Becky and Sunita have a heated row, before Steve arrives and takes her home.

Hayley, who's witnessed it all, begs Sunita to see things from Becky's point of view before involving the police. Will the Alahans press charges?

Meanwhile, Maria and Carla launch a charm offensive on Frank. However, Carla's left disappointed when he fails to sign on the dotted line. Instead, Frank suggests a meeting with Maria at his place tomorrow night to go through the details of the contract. Carla urges Maria to go alone and seal the deal, telling the girls it's their only chance…

Elsewhere, Lloyd is shocked to hear of Eileen's theft but offers to support her, and David announces that he's engaged to Candy and that she's coming to live with the Platts.

March 3rd 8-30pm

Maria takes the day off to get glammed up for her evening with Frank, as Carla points out that this deal could save the factory. At the house, Maria helps Frank with the cooking and starts to relax in his company.

Soon afterwards, Frank chats her up but she tells him that she's got a boyfriend so talk turns to business. They're on the verge of agreeing the deal when Frank leans in to kiss Maria. She makes it clear she's not interested, but will he accept this?

Meanwhile, Becky tries to forget about recent events, but Steve's not in a forgiving mood and orders her to work behind the bar with Tracy. Becky is then forced to bite her tongue as Tracy baits her all day. But how long will she be able to take Tracy's taunts?

Elsewhere, Xin tells Tina and Graeme that her visa is due to expire in two months and she'll be deported; David declares that he'll be marrying Candy in three weeks' time; Izzy urges Owen to apologise to Eileen; and Dev and Sunita receive an offer for the Swinton shop.

4th March 7-30 pm

Maria turns up at work to learn that Frank's rung Carla and agreed to the deal. Everyone congratulates her but Maria's uneasy, especially when Frank arrives at the factory to sign the contract, behaving like nothing's happened.

Later, Frank apologises for misreading the signals but swears he meant no harm. As he goes, Carla demands to know why Maria was so frosty with Frank…

Meanwhile, as David introduces Gail and Audrey to his new fiancée, they're stunned to find out that 'Candy' is none other than Kylie Turner.

Elsewhere, relations remain strained between Steve and Becky as Becky struggles to cope with Tracy breathing down her neck in The Rovers; Anna worries about Gary's angry reaction when Chesney refuses to lend him his van again; and Graeme tells Tina that he could get his mate to provide a fake ID for Xin.

4th March 8-30pm

Gail rails at David for picking up someone like Kylie, but David threatens to leave if she throws Kylie out. As David introduces his fiancée in the pub, Steve's angry to see Kylie back in town and Becky orders her out.

However, Kylie assures Becky that she's not come for Max or more money - she says she's in love with David and wants a second chance.

Meanwhile, when Frank returns to Underworld to sign on the dotted line, he's met with hostility and admits he was drunk, misinterpreted the situation with Maria and is sorry. He then suggests withdrawing from the deal which puts Carla on the horns of a dilemma.

Elsewhere, Faye comes to visit the Windasses again but storms out when she catches Anna and Eddie looking in her bag, and Kylie tells Xin that her only hope is to marry Graeme to stay in the country - leaving Graeme and Tina thoughtful.
