    Bet Lynch to come back

BRITAIN'S favourite landlady Bet Lynch is set for a shock Rovers Return.

For we can exclusively reveal that actress Julie Goodyear will be the first of MANY old faces making a Coronation Street comeback.

As well as reinstating the Weatherfield legend, it's believed the soap's new producer Phil Collinson will look to AXE younger faces of the ITV soap in a bid to boost ratings.

The former Dr Who supremo, who famously chopped Freema Agyeman as the Doc's sidekick, has been dubbed Mr Cull-inson.

Julie, 67, who played The Rovers' brassy landlady for 25 years, recently hinted at a return to the show. She left back in 1995 after winning the Lifetime Achievement Award at the National Television Awards.

A Corrie insider said: "Phil feels viewers have been turning off because the show has become a teen soap, like Hollyoaks. So he's set a brief to make changes and revive the golden days.

"Julie is on the top of the list. Phil thinks she stands for everything about the show - the humour and the campness of Corrie." Other iconic names he wants to bring back to the cobbles include Kevin Kennedy, who played Curly Watts from 1983 to 2003.

The 48-year-old star admitted last year that he was interested in making a comeback.

He said: "Coronation Street celebrates 50 years soon. I think this is the perfect time to return."

Collinson is also interested in getting Loose Women star Sherrie Hewson back on the soap. She joined in 1993 playing dizzy Maureen Naylor.

Our source added: "Phil has also mentioned Richard Fleeshman who played Craig Harris. Richard left in 2006 but was always a well-loved character."

But the new plans will hit the younger stars of the show too. Favourites like Ashley Peacock (Steven Arnold), screen wife Claire (Julia Haworth) and Maria Connor (Samia Smith) are under scrutiny.

The source said: "Newer names could face the axe. One of those up for discussion is Helen Flanagan, who plays Rosie Webster.

"Phil's aim is to make the show more about the older, more established characters. The Street celebrates a landmark later this year so it seems natural that they would want the big names back in the show for then.

"Just a glimpse of Bet back on the cobbles will be enough to get fans tuning back in."

eveyone would love him if he got rid of Helen Flanagan, i am sick of us having to watch her whilst she uses the show trying to prop up some tacky lads' mag career!

not sure what the point would be in bringing back Curly, does he have any ties to the street anymore? would like Maureen back for a bit, isn't she still married to Bill? would love to see her and Auntie Pam having a row! as for Bet, I have always liked her character, but she needs to come back for a proper reason and have a storyline for it to be good.

Curly has no ties with the street, Maureen divorced Bill when she found out he was living with Audrey. I was disappointed when Bet came back the last time, her storyline was pathetic so I hope that they make a better job of it this time, if she does come back. Although I have a feeling that most of these characters will be joining for a short time only, to be present for the 50th anniversary, doubt they are in it for long.

Please please don't bring Bet Lynch back. She is well past her sell-by date. She is as camp as Butlins and would even outcamp Sean Tully.

Coronation Street bosses have today denied claims that Julie Goodyear is being lined up for a return to the cobbles.

Yesterday, a newspaper reported that Phil Collinson is hoping to bring back Goodyear's character Bet Lynch when he takes over as the soap's series producer later this year.

It was also claimed that Collinson had decided to recruit other old favourites like Kevin Kennedy (Curly Watts) and Sherrie Hewson (Maureen Naylor) as the drama approaches its 50th anniversary.

However, a Coronation Street spokesperson today told Sky: "At the moment there are no plans for Bet to return. The new producer hasn't even started yet, he's not made any decisions.

"There are lots of exciting things being planned for the 50th anniversary but nothing has been finalised."

Collinson will officially take office at Coronation Street in the summer as a replacement for current leading producer Kim Crowther.

Julie Goodyear diagnosed with dementia :(

Coronation Street star Julie Goodyear has been diagnosed with dementia, her husband has revealed.
The 81-year-old actress played iconic Rovers Return landlady Bet Lynch across various stints in the ITV soap.
Scott Brand, Julie?s husband, said in a statement: ?My darling wife and I have had to come to terms with this heartbreaking diagnosis.
?Unfortunately, Julie has been suffering forgetfulness for some time and we have been seeking medical advice and assistance, but we now know that there is no hope of a reversal in the situation ? and that her condition will get progressively, and perhaps speedily, worse.
?We have taken the decision to publicly announce the diagnosis as Julie still loves visiting friends and eating out.
?Inevitably she is recognised, and fans love to meet her ? and she them ? but she can get confused particularly if she is tired. I hope people will understand.?
Julie remains a patron of Willow Wood Hospice in Greater Manchester.
The soap star made her cobbles debut all the way back in 1966, appearing initially as a recurring character before staging a comeback four years later, this time as a regular.
Known for her dress sense and her various iconic hairstyles, one of which was the signature beehive look, Bet became not only a Coronation Street icon, but one of TV?s most recognisable characters, appearing at the forefront of the show as a Rovers barmaid, and later landlady, across a 25 year period.
Julie departed the role in 1995, but would later stage a short comeback in 2002, before leaving once more.
The soap star returned to Coronation Street for her final appearances in 2003, which saw her reunite with old pal Liz McDonald in Brighton.
Following her departure from the ITV soap, Julie appeared in Hollyoaks, playing a character named Mrs Temple in a single episode of the Channel 4 serial, which aired in 2006.
The TV legend also famously took part in Celebrity Big Brother.
