CORONATION Street is to screen Soapland's first ever transsexual wedding as part of the show's 50th anniversary celebrations.
Café owner Roy Cropper (David Neilson) will finally wed sex-swap lover Hayley in a ceremony to make their partnership official.
The pair had their relationship blessed in 1999, but UK law did not then allow transsexuals to marry in their new gender.
Fans saw Hayley - born Harold Patterson - change her name by deed poll to Hayley Cropper, but the pair were never legally wed.
The law was changed in 2004 and Roy and Hayley, played by Julie Hesmondhalgh, will take advantage later this year.
But the marriage is set to cause friction as Roy wants a low budget register office wedding, while Hayley wants a plush do - causing her to ban him from her bed.
An insider said: "Thankfully, Roy relents after Hayley puts the pressure on and it's a day for all the street's residents to celebrate."
