One week ago Cheryl Cole performed her new single ‘Promise This’ to several million ‘X Factor’ viewers on television’s most sought-after pop slot. This weekend, Girls Aloud bandmate Nadine Coyle performed her new single ‘Insatiable’ to a few hundred drunken clubbers at 2am in the morning at London’s G.A.Y club. It’s a tough old world, this pop lark.

Saying that Nadine’s career has had a few hiccups so far is something of an understatement – it’s been more a case of chronic wind. Her album has been endlessly delayed, the record deal with supermarket Tesco has left fans scratching their heads and recent rumours of a rift between her and Cheryl were the last thing she needed. However, Nadine is keen to prove that she is more than a match for her (former?) colleague in her first ever UK solo show – no matter the venue, audience or fact that fans will only be able to buy a physical copy of her album along with their weekly groceries.

Taking to the small stage in a tiny silver cocktail dress, it’s clear from the off that Nadine had something bigger in mind than G.A.Y. when considering her live show. As well as her band and countless backing singers, she also packs in topless male dancers and a full brass section. It’s difficult not to think that they had all been hired for the weekend when Nadine still had her heart set on an ‘X Factor’ performance of her own.

But despite so many odds stacked against her, she’s still impressive as a solo performer. Mainly due to her phenomenal live vocals, and she appears confident and self-assured on stage without four other girls to help out. The songs are decent, sixties-influenced pop tunes – opening with a previously unheard album track before launching into debut single ‘Insatiable’, a soaring epic cruelly ignored by daytime radio across the UK.

After two more horn-led album tracks, introduced in her incomprehensible Irish drawl, she asks the audience: “Should we do a Girls Aloud song?” The answer is a unanimous yes. She performs a medley of ‘Love Machine’ and ‘The Promise’, the two GA tracks her own sound most closely resembles. The crowd (at least the ones who haven’t wandered off for another beer), are suitably appreciative, although after a night dancing to Kylie remixes, perhaps ‘Something Kinda Ooh’ would have been a better pick.

After another track from her new album, her big finale is revealed as a second run-through of ‘Insatiable’. We get the point – she’d probably quite like us all to go and buy a copy.

The Nadine Coyle experience is an odd one. She’s undeniably talented, more so than Cheryl Cole, but the one thing she lacks is that all important X factor and it’s hard not to see the whole project as having run out of puff before picking up pace.

Keen to be seen as a credible alternative to Cheryl, it works to an extent, but the simple fact is that she is positioning herself as a counter to the UK’s biggest pop artist of the moment – and pushing against what’s popular may not prove the brightest idea for a new artist..

NADINE COYLE has sold an embarrassing 117 copies of her debut solo single.
The GIRLS ALOUD star, who was always billed as the band's best singer, now has the dubious honour of occupying the lofty heights of No35 in the midweek chart.

Even Irish TV puppet DUSTIN THE TURKEY could do better than that.

And Nadine, who signed up to that well-known record label Tesco for her new album, had better brace herself for a mega trolley dash to improve her position later this week.

The singer, who released Insatiable exclusively through the supermarket, flogged 117 copies, according to official first-day sales figures on Monday. Digital sales were dire too - just 2,439. It's a chart disaster compared with her rivals.

RIHANNA racked up 47,000 downloads with new song Only Girl (In the World).

And CHERYL COLE's sales figures rub further salt into Nadine's wounds.

The X Factor judge has shifted 566 hard copies of track Promise This and 27,643 on t'internet - in her second week of sales. And she sold a whopping 157,000 copies in the first week.

With Nadine's efforts on the promotional trail and all the Girls Aloud support, she should be moonwalking into the Top 10.

The Irish singer has also failed to make it on to the Radio 1 playlist - a surefire sign the song is a stinker.

At this rate she'll be in the reduced aisle with stale muffins by Thursday.

There's no mistaking Nadine's got a good set of pipes, but she's about as endearing as malaria.

Maybe if she'd put some work in over here instead of keeping her head down in LA, it would have fared better.

Her increasing rift with popular bandmates SARAH HARDING, NICOLA ROBERTS, KIMBERLEY WALSH and Cheryl can't have helped either.

Nadine, pictured after showcasing some of her songs at Koko in Camden, north London, on Monday, is the first solo artist to release a debut album through one retailer.

Even though it follows a successful deal by Tesco with dance legends FAITHLESS, who have shifted 80,000 copies with the supermarket since May, it's not started off so well for Nadine.

Its her accent that gets me, and I am Irish - she has the strangest Northern Ireland accent and then this LA drawl - if they thought Cheryl would need subtitles for the X Factor in the USA, man what would Nadine need.

Nadine Coyle has confirmed that she has split from her fiancé Jason Bell.

The Girls Aloud star, who announced her engaged to the former American football player in September, says the break-up was a mutual decision and the pair remain friends.

"A few weeks ago Jason and i broke up (sic)," Coyle wrote on her Twitter account. "We are great friends and decided we are better this way. Im in NYC working & I love all your support.x"

The Northern Irish singer had been dating 35-year-old Bell for the part two years.

The news comes after it was revealed that Nadine will be reuniting with bandmates Cheryl Cole, Sarah Harding, Kimberley Walsh and Nicola Roberts for a tour in 2012.

Meanwhile Nadine, who now lives in California, is currently attempting to break the US market as a solo artist. Her new single 'Runnin' is to be released in the States this month and she is hoping it will be more successful than her debut solo song 'Insatiable' which was badly received after it's UK release.

"Nadine won’t give up on her dream,” a source told Now Magazine. “She reckons she’ll have more chance in the States, where talent and singing ability count.

"Her life’s in America now and she’d happily never return to the UK after such a hostile reception.”
