    Suicides rock Dundee

Young hockey star becomes fifth suicide to rock Dundee in two weeks

A RISING ice hockey star yesterday became Dundee's fifth suicide in just over a fortnight.

The body of tragic Iain Bell, 20 was discovered at his home by his heartbroken father Martin, 47.

He'd left a two-word apology on his Facebook page. It simply said: "I'm sorry."

The tragedy comes in a month which has seen the suicides of four other young men in the city.

A police spokeswoman revealed that they were called to the Corbie Wood development shortly after 7am. She said there were no apparent suspicious circumstances surrounding the death in Graham Street.

Police say they do not believe Iain's death is linked to the other four tragedies.

Iain had played for leading ice hockey teams Fife Flyers and Dundee Tigers and also turned out at national level.

Last night, a spokesman for the Tigers paid a glowing tribute to Iain.

He said the young forward was one of the best ice and roller hockey players in the country and was a fans' favourite everywhere he played.

The spokesman added: "Iain's death has come as a huge shock to everyone in the game. He was a supremely talented and well-liked young man who had a huge future ahead of him.

"He was a very neat, silky player who captained the Scotland under-20 team and scored some sublime goals. He was coming back from injury and seemed very happy.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to all his family and friends."

On Thursday July 1, 17-year-old Anthony Riddell was found dead in a wooded area in Lochee. Two days later, Ragan Thomson, 18, was found dead in the same area.

The bodies were found by the same earlymorning dog walker.

Last Saturday, the body of 23-year-old Steven Loftus, of Mill O'Mains, was found in Finlathen Park. Just hours later, the body of Scott Nicholl, 22, of Kirkton, was found on the northern outskirts of the city.

In a tearful interview, Steven's mum, Yvonne, said that a combination of the party drug Bubbles and an accident at work may have driven her son over the edge.

She added: "Nothing is worth taking your own life for. Speak to someone, seek help, there's always someone out there who will listen to you and will offer advice."
