Not feeling happy at the moment. Quite the reverse.

One of our two cats, Muggles, has been terminally ill for a while with kidney failure. We noticed about 6 weeks ago that he was losing weight and was a bit listless, so we took him to the vet who diagnosed kidney failure. He said there wasn't much we could do about it and it was just a matter of time. He said that he wouldn't be in any pain - and he certainly didn't seem to be - but he would just get more and more listless, which is what has been happening. He has been getting worse and sits in one place not moving for a long time, though every now and then he gets up and walks around and even goes outside for a bit.

Last night, after a day of doing very little, he suddenly got up and ran to the door. I opened it for him and he ran outside. That was the last I saw of him. It was quite cold last night and he didn't come back in. I tried calling him and going out to look for him but I couldn't see him anywhere. We have a cat flap, so it was just a matter of hoping he would come back in. But he still hasn't turned up and, after another extensive look outside (and inside, just in case), I can't see him anywhere this morning. If he just laid down in the cold last night and didn't move, that might well have finished him off. The worse thing is not knowing where he is or if he is still alive. I have been out this morning looking everywhere I can think of, but all to no avail.

The sad thing is he is only 10 and, until a few weeks ago, was a very lively cat and definitely "Top Cat" of the neighbourhood. But he was also very friendly and he'd spend a lot of time in the evening curled up on my lap. Not to mention helping me write my books during the day by walking all over the keyboard! We were good mates!

Of course I'm hoping he'll turn up, but even then, I know it's only a matter of a very short time.....

I am sorry that Muggles has gone missing, every pet owners nightmare not knowing where the animal is, especially when it is ill. I hope that Muggles will turn up again for a few more cuddles

I feel your pain parkerman: the distress of watching a terminally ill cat decline slowly, and also the panic of a cat going missing and scouring the neighbourhood to no avail.

I really hope he turns up and that he gets to spend time curled up on your lap again.

Very sorry to hear this parkerman, if Muggles had a cat blanket try hanging it up outside ,if possible not too far away from the cat flap, don't allow it to get wet, tom cat scent is very strong it might just give him a track. This worked for us when one of our cats went missing for three days. Now obviously your dealing with different circumstances, but may be worth a try....

As I said, he is terminally ill with kidney failure and very listless. He has spent most of the last few days hardly moving. I think that's the last thing he'd be up to. I'm much more concerned that the cold got him last night.
