Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas has been handed a £2,020 fine after admitting that he left the scene of a car crash.

The 25-year-old, who plays Weatherfield builder Jason Grimshaw, lost control of his Chrysler and struck crash barriers at a junction in Manchester last October while driving with two passengers.

Following the collision, Thomas travelled home in a passing taxi while one of his friends dialled 999. He voluntarily attended a police station to discuss the accident a week later.

Appearing at Manchester Magistrates' Court yesterday, the actor admitted failing to stop and failing to report an accident. He said that he fled the scene because he felt "intimidated" by a group of spectators who recognised him and began taking photographs.

As well as the £2,020 fine, Thomas was given five penalty points and ordered to pay £50 costs. He opted to pay the fine on the spot.

Speaking outside court, the star's lawyer Nick Freeman commented: "He is relieved the matter is behind him. He regrets the matter and apologises for his involvement."
