RAPPER MC Hammer could join Celebrity Big Brother - as show bosses splash out on bigger names.

Producers have decided to slash the number of celebs in the house to allow them to spend more on individual stars.

The new series of the Channel 4 show, which begins on January 3, is set to star just ten celebrities.

This is down from a record number of 14 in 2007.

That was the year the show was rocked by the Jade Goody and Shilpa Shetty race row.

Producers have decided to dig deep to make the show's last series go out with a bang.

Nineties hip-hop legend Hammer, 47 - real name Stanley Burrell - would be one of the main acts.

And talks are underway to get the rapper - best known for his trademark Hammer pants and hit U Can't Touch This - on board.

Rex FeaturesCash-strapped Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson, 42, is also in negotiations to appear on the fly-on-the-wall show. She could earn a whopping £250,000.

Last year's winner Ulrika Jonsson walked away with £175,000 - and she was the highest-paid celeb of the 2008 series.

A show source said: "Previous CBB series have suffered because there have been too many celebs who were just not that famous.

"Producers want the final series to be the best ever - and are determined to push the boat out by signing up the biggest names they can.

"But to get big names, you have to spend big money - which means there will be less for minor stars."

Other celebrities rumoured to be in the running include eighties singer Boy George, 48, and notorious Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss.

Producers have a number of tricks up their sleeves to help them make the last series the best so far.

But the programme will face tough competition from ITV1's Dancing On Ice and BBC1's So You Think You Can Dance.

January's CBB will be the last because Channel 4 has decided to axe Big Brother due to falling ratings.

Next summer's main Big Brother will also be the final one. Channel 4 is looking for new shows to fill the slot.

THE final series of Celebrity Big Brother promises to be hellish - if this flaming eye logo is anything to go by.
Bosses promised the stars will have "some of the most unpredictable weeks of their lives" when it starts on January 3.

Executive producer Shirley Jones said: "This is no holiday camp. Celebrity Big Brother won't leave the limelight quietly."

CELEBRITY Big Brother contestants are to be set tasks by TV stars - in a bid to perk up the last ever series.

Countdown's Rachel Riley, 23, has already signed up to test housemates' maths skills.

Producers are also eyeing Location Location Location host Kirstie Allsopp, 36, who could set contestants homemaking tasks.

And chefs such as Jamie Oliver, 34, could give cooking challenges.

The stars will enter the Big Brother compound to speak to the contestants - a first for the show.

An insider said: "The plan is to surprise the celebs and do something different.

"The tasks are one of the most popular parts of the show and producers have been thinking how to spice them up."

The celebrities are due to enter the house on January 3.

Among those thought to have signed up are Boy George, 48, and Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss, 43. MC Hammer, 47, and Pamela Anderson, 42, are also in talks.

Bosses have pledged to spend more on fewer stars to make the last series the best ever.

BOY George's plan to appear on Celebrity Big Brother was yesterday branded "absurd" by probation officers.

The singer, 48, out of jail on licence after assaulting a rent boy, wants the High Court to let him appear on the reality show in a £200,000 deal.

But Harry Fletcher, of probation officers' union Napo, said: "Anyone on licence and in a long TV project clearly could not meet the requirement to report often."

Probation service lawyers say the star may also hit confidence in the justice system if he wins. The case resumes today.

GLAMOROUS former Dynasty star Stephanie Beacham has signed up for Celebrity Big Brother.
And astrologer Russell Grant and ex-football hardman Vinnie Jones will decide today if they are joining.

It is thought the three have been offered £250,000 each to take part in the Channel 4 reality show, which starts on Sunday.

Producers want Stephanie for her old-school class.

Flamboyant Russell, 58, must decide between CBB and a slot on ITV1's new cooking show Marco Pierre White's Kitchen Burnout.

An insider said: "He will literally make his mind up on the deadline."

Vinnie, 44, is also mulling over the offer.

Others lined up include Pamela Anderson and Ronnie Wood's ex Ekaterina Ivanova, 21.
