My hubby was diabetic for 15 years, his was brought on by shock. If your boyfriend is only controlling it by diet, then he is lucky that it is not to bad, unfortunately, those that get it early in life do go on to having to inject lather in life. As long as he eats little and often, and watches the amounts of sugar he has, then he should be ok, All alcohal should be in small amounts, and low sugar,as alcohal effects diabetic kidneys badly,he should also take good care of his feet, as sugar gets stored in there feet and they can have major problems if the cut there feet and any problems on the feet eg,a small corn etc, must not be treated at home. Before any exercise he should have a small snack, to stop him going low sugar, you havent said if he checks his blood levels, normal levels, are around 4, must diabetics are around 7 but if they dont eat then they can go as low as 1 and then they can go into a coma(know as a hyper).or if like my hubby,he loved cheese and would eat too much, and his levels would go up to 17 or 24 which is life treatening. Its a balance of what food and the amount of carbohydrates, the diabetic clinic will advise on what he should have,Quote:

My nan and grandad both have diabeties. My grandad isn't as bad, he just has to monitor his through like diet and stuff, but my nan is an insuline diabetic. She has to take her injection before each meal. And her sister has it and she has been having to take injections since she was 9.
My family has a history of diabetes..
My mum's mum found out she got diabetes like 2 years ago.. My dad's dad dies from diabetes and other ilnesses about 5-6 years ago.. Other members of my dad's family has diabetes..
My dad has diabetes... He had it since he was likeee... 30ish? He's now 44.. bless lol.. He takes tablets and stuff.. about 3-4 different ones.. He dosen't take insulin yet but if he's not careful then he will be :(
He was serious about his diet for like 2 weeks and slowly slipped back to normal lol. He wouldn't be able to be serious.. He has something wrong with his liver because of it as well I think  Tut tut.. Oh and he goes for check ups and stuff but is not serious about it because he knows he's quite naughty and dosen't take it all seriously so sometimes misses it and stuff.. He should be checking himself with a home needle kit thing at least every 2 weeks.. but he hasn't done it in months lol..
Mum says I probably get diabetes if I'm not careful because I eat alot of sweets.. I'm not that careful about it too.. It just sort of 'slips my mind' that I have a lot of diabetic members in my family and I have a good chance of getting it..
i have a great uncle that has diabeties and my great grandad had it and i have it to a degree. i have been admited to hospital with a very low sugar level that the paramedics said theyd revieved people with higher sugar level then mine but i was about 14 at the time and the doctor sadi i have to make sure i eat and drink sugary foods/drinks first thing every morning or ill end up in hospital. im not sure if it is classed a diabeties but i know it scared me and my mum at the time. but i still get checked regarly but i guess theres different ways of controlling the syptoms.
Diabetes can be if you got a very low sugar level or if you got a very high sugar level... my family has got the high one if you hadn't guessed :) x
The main symptoms of diabetes are:
- increased thirst
- going to the loo all the time – especially at night
- extreme tiredness
- weight loss
- genital itching or regular episodes of thrush
- blurred vision.
I've got type 2 diabetes which is just controlled by diet. It was diagnosed after i had gestional diabetes, and i had to use insulin in both my pregnancies
my moms mom died from type 1 diabetes :( my dad has type 2 diabetes he found out about 4 or 5 years ago he now has to have tablets everymorning and night metphormin (sp?) being diabetec he shouldnt have chocolate but he sneaks into the fridge of a night :nono: when the family is sleeping!! we have told him to stop with the chocolate otherwise he will end up going to type 1 diabetes!! hopefully that wont happen
Does your bf have to get up alot in the night for the toilet?
My dad does its apparently another sign of diabetes, this is a problem for my dad as this keeps him awake alot and he sleeps during the day when he should be active!
He has major lapses but in the main he is quite good at dealing with it. Although it is quite difficult cause he's got a major sweet tooth, but we have stocked up on special choclate from Thorntons.
I am struggling a bit though cause I'm sure he doesnt take care of himself properly, but then on the other hand i'm his girlfriend not his mum but I guess there should be a balance somewhere.
Thanks for the advise guys
Hazy I will pm you when I get a bit more time!

If you look at the rate of diabetes you'll see it increasing. Kids are now getting diabetes at an early age because of all the sweets that are thrown at them.
I've cut out as much sugar from my diet as possible. Its amazing the amount of products that have sugar added to them. I've started to change my eating habits in accordance with whfoods.com
Hey guys,
I went out with a mate today and bought a Fanta Fruit Twist.. (and I hardly have anything except water unless I go to a party or something).. and I was thirsty because of the 30 minute up and down the hill walk lol. We then went back to her house and I had a few sweets with my drink.. And later I felt sooooo dizzy and a bit sick.. I think it was because of the sweet intake I had in one go.. (god im never doing that again.. a lesson..)
+ I'm worried this may be because I my (close) family has got quite a history of diabetes and I love my sweets.. I do try and reduce this but could this be related or something?
I don't have any of the symptons I posted from the official diabetes site.. I do have blured vision but that's because I'm always on the computer.. and it's for far away stuff and I got glasses for that..
Is it true obesity can lead to diabetes? I'm kinda overweight and worried i have started dieting again and exercise.
Also what alcoholic beverages can diabetics drink please?
Obesity can increase your chance of having type 2 diabetes. If your waist is 31.5 inches (women), 35 inches or over for Asian men and 37 inches or over for white and black men then you're at risk.
There's some info here on alcohol.
I am a size 6-8 in clothes and I am a type 2 diabetic and have been for the last 5 yrs so I am not fat or overweight for my height but I still managed to become a diabetic. I take just one tablet in the evening of a combination pill called- Pioglitazone and Metformin. Which works a treat as I was taking just ordinary metformin when I was first diagnosed but this had no effect on my blood sugar reading:( - I have no history of this in my family and check my sugar levels twice a day plus watching what I eat....
Thats interesting about the combination pill. im currently on metformin 4 times a day and it makes me feel really bad. Docs have told me i just need to put up with it....might have to bring this up and my next clinic appointment.
Im slightly overweight and apparently the metformin can help bring your weight down but think it may have the oposite affect on me. Have read somewhere its all to do with the time you take it at having the best effect...does anyone know if this is true?
Found this:
Acceptable in moderation: - Red wines, Dry or medium-dry white wines. - Dry sherries. Dry light beers (lagers, light ales fermented with low residual sugar). Spirits (whiskey, gin, vodka, etc) with "diet" mixers.
Use with extreme caution due to high sugar content: Sweet wines or sherries. Ports. Heavy or dark sweetened beers (stout, porters, etc which have high residual sugar). Wine coolers. Spirits with normal mixers. Cocktails. Liqueurs. Use with extreme caution due to very high alcohol concentration: - Neat (undiluted) spirits.

I listed the name of the pill I take and it works for me as I was on metformin 3 times a day previously and used to suffer lows and felt giddy and sick :(
My weight even went up even with me following a diet. One thing I was advised was being a diabetic it is harder to lose weight. Out metabolism is supposed to slow down completely thats why were advised to exercise and keep active. I used to take my old metformin pills one after breakfast, another at lunch and one for dinner made some difference to my sugar readings but not a lot. My new meds are better and I seem to pass more water then before plus the feeling of sickness went too.
Bring up all your concerns in your next review or appointment. I found also what made a difference was finding a doctor who would listen to me as that has proved so helpful!
got diagnosed recently as diabetic, any advice and tips greatly needed please
i need to lose a good amount of weight and i stress eat when depressed :(
Could you perhaps ask your doctor for counselling or CBT to help manage your stress and eating? The trouble is that doctors don't tend to take comfort eating seriously, so if you approach him/her make sure you're clear it's a serious problem and a hindrance to controlling your diabetes.
Cognitive behaviour therapy is really helping me atm, I did the course way back when for people with anxiety issues, but CBT is used for lots of issues as it involves a process of setting begets and writing down how it made you feel, then you repeat that target to reinforce it then gradually in crease the target, theres a whole circulaur thought process they teach which with a bit of will power really works.
My daughter is having a gastric bypass soon. She is 24. It will put her diabetes in remission so that's why we are doing it. She wants to do it and it's the way they will tackle diabetes in the future. She has been overweight since she was 4 years old. She got ill from abroad and they said she would pile on weight when she recovered. A bypass is not an easy option. The operation will happen in the coming months. When we went to the briefing they say lots of people have bad eating habits and they work with you to address those. My daughter went on a healthy eating course run by psychologists a few years back. It ran for 12 weeks. She did not change her eating patterns!
I was diagnosed recently and went to a diabetic education session recently. I cannot find exercise I like yet. I've been running, cycling. I think swimming is boring.
I have been losing weight because of the metformin though. I think a lot of us comfort eat. That's normal. The education session said we can eat as normal but less it best . Obviously brown bread etc better it's just watching your carbs which turn to sugar. A handful of rice rather than a large portion. You can have sweet treats now and then. When they diagnosed me I was upset for two weeks and did not want to eat. Everything tasted horrible to me. I still do not really enjoy food. Someone else on the course felt the same. That is normal at the beginning they say.
i am on metformin now but getting bad headaches and eye pain and blurred vision
I get the bad headaches as well. I think its all part of the side effects.
thrush bad lately
