EastEnders is responding to June Brown's shocking announcement that she has quit the soap.
The BBC insisted that it would not close the door on Brown returning after 35 years of playing Dot Cotton, despite the actress saying this week that she "will never go back".
An EastEnders spokesperson told Digital Spy: "We never discuss artists' contracts, however as far as EastEnders are concerned the door remains open for June, as it always has if the story arises and if June wishes to take part."
Brown made some provocative comments about her future on EastEnders when she appeared on the Distinct Nostalgia podcast, when she insisted she did not "want a retainer for EastEnders".
"I've left. I've left for good," she said. "I've sent myself off to Ireland where she'll stay. I've left EastEnders. I did make up a limerick. It's a bit dirty."
Brown then shared a limerick that was less than favourable about the soap: "I went back to do a good story. Alas and alack, when I got back, it had gone up in smoke. Got a small part, a very small part.
"And that ended up as a big wet fart. Alas and alack, I will never go back."
Digital Spy has learned that the EastEnders team were surprised by Brown's comments, with an insider saying: "Everyone is a little baffled by this as June's dressing room and all her contents are still where they have always been, in fact we were under the impression that she is attending a gathering tomorrow (February 21) to mark the 35th anniversary."
As Brown mentioned, Dot was last seen going off to Ireland after being led to believe that Martin Fowler (James Bye) had stolen money from her. In reality, it was her granddaughter Sonia (Natalie Cassidy) who'd taken the money.
The actress has a history of publicly bargaining over her future on EastEnders, having announced in 2012 that she had quit the soap. Dot was back on screen before too long.
