I don't think she was thinking about letting Alan think she was dead, she was scared to come back because she thought Steph would kill her. And when Steph was arrested she probably wanted to stay away in a bit of revenge for all that Steph put her through. She did tie her up in the cellar, lock her in a cupboard, threaten to kill her with a hammer and bully her for years!
