"DENNIS!" Dennis stopped in his tracks. He was heading to the Bookies to pick up the days takings. He recognised the voice but couldn't believe that it was true, that she was back, that she was here, here in Walford. He turned slowly towards where the voice had come from and saw the most amazing sight, a sight he thought he would never see again. There standing in the middle of the square was Sharon, the love of his life.

After a moment or two of stillness Dennis ran towards her and swept Sharon up into his arms and swung her around.
"Oh Sharon, I can't believe you're here. I've missed you so much."
"Me to. I needed time to think and get my head together Dennis before i came back. I didn't even know if you would be here or not, I was just kind of hoping that you would be."
"Sharon my head is all over the place, I really thought I would never see you again. I went looking for you but couldn't find you anywhere."
"Dennis, can we go somewhere to talk? Alot of things have happened since we last saw each other."
"We both know whats happened Sharon, why waste time talking about the past? We should be focusing on the future."
"Because there's something I need to tell you...."

Part 2.


Dennis led Sharon over to their flat they once shared. Once inside Dennis turned to Sharon and took her in his arms and hugged her.
"Sharon i've missed you so much, now with Den not being around we can start again, make a go of things."
"Dads not around anymore?"
"No he left Chrissie for another woman, half his age apparently. Doesn't surprise me in the slightest knowing Den."
Sharon looked out of the window over to the Vic. She loved that place and would do anything to get it back. Her dad and Chrissie owned it now but she would love for her and Dennis to be behind the bar as landlord and landlady. She knew that she would have to tell Dennis her news and see how he reacted first before putting any plans in place.

Dennis walked over towards Sharon and placed his arms around her waist and rested his head on her shoulder. He too looked at the Vic.
"We can go over there later on if you like? Say hi to Chrissie, let her know you're back."
"Yeah maybe but first we need to talk. I've got something important to tell you."
"What is it?"
"Dennis this isn't easy. When I left on Christmas Day I was heartbroken. Zoe was giving you the one thing I couldn't. I went to America and stayed with 'Chelle and Vicki for awhile but I needed time on my own. I moved back over here after awhile, wanted to be nearer home. Dennis I don't know how to tell you this..."
"Sharon just tell me, you're getting me worried now."
"I'm pregnant....."

Part 3.


"What? I thought...I thought....that you couldn't-" Sharon saw the look of shock on his face and interrupted him before he could say anymore.
"Yes well I thought that I couldn't have kids as well Dennis, this was as much of a shock to me as it is to you."
Sharon walked over to the sofa and sat down. She looked over at Dennis who was stood staring out of the window.
"Dennis, come and sit down, we need to talk things through."
"What is there to talk about? We're having a baby together Sharon! This is all i've ever wanted, I can't get my head around the fact that i've got the woman I love back in my life and that i'm going to be a father!"

Sharon was so happy that Dennis felt like this, she was almost certain that he would but there was a niggling feeling at the back of her mind that he wouldn't want this, not after what happened with Zoe. She needn't of worried, not after what Dennis had just said to her. Dennis sat beside Sharon on the sofa and took ahold of her hand and placed it between his. He looked into Sharon's eyes and said,
"This is the best news ever but are you sure that you're pregnant? I mean i thought it was impossible for you to conceive?"
"I was feeling really yukky a couple of weeks ago and went to the doctors, he did a few tests and couldn't find what was wrong so he referred me to a specialist who did an ultrasound to see if they could see what was causing me to be sick all the time and they found I was pregnant. Dennis you don't know how I felt when I heard those words. I went to see my own specialist who told me that I couldn't have kids and he told me that this was like a miracle, he never thought that I would conceive. He's told me that this could be my one and only chance to have a child, be a mother. As soon as i found out I knew I had to find you." Dennis leaned over towards her and kissed her, Sharon responded and they kissed passionately.

Dennis's mobile began to ring and he reached inside his pocket and answered it.
"Hello?" Dennis got up off the sofa and walked over towards the window again.
"Right, i'm going to be late today, no i'm not even coming in today, you can manage without me can't you?" Dennis turned towards Sharon and smiled at her whilst listening to the person down the phone.
"You'll find out soon enough. See you later." Dennis put his mobile back into his pocket.
"Come on we're going to the Vic, let Chrissie know the good news."
"Dennis i'm not sure I want to see her yet. I need to talk to you about something else."
"Please don't tell me that it's twins!!"
"Don't be silly! It's the Vic, I want it back."

Part 4.


An hour later Sharon and Dennis are walking to the Vic. Sharon stops and stares up at the pub she so desperately wants back.
"Dennis we have to get this place back. I want to raise our baby here."
"All we can do is try Sharon but if i'm honest I can't see how you are going to get it back. Chrissie and your dad own it now."
"Dad might sell it to us if we could get in touch with him." They carry on walking and enter the pub.

Pauline is the first person to see them and a look of shock appears on her face.
"Sharon, Dennis! Is Vicki with you?" Sharon looked around the pub and saw familiar faces. Dot, Pauline, Chrissie, Sonia and a few she didn't recognise.
"No Pauline, Vicki's still out in America with 'Chelle. She asked me to pass on her love to you though." Sharon turned and looked Chrissie in the eye.
"We need to talk." Chrissie looked shocked to see Sharon standing the other side of the bar, she didn't think she would ever see Sharon again, well she was rather hoping she didn't.
"Come upstairs Sharon."

Sharon and Dennis follow Chrissie upstairs whilst in the bar the murmours start betweeen the regulars. Dot turns to Pauline,
"I wonder if Zoe knows they're back?"
"Wouldn't like to be in Dennis's shoes when Charlie finds out he's back."

Upstairs in the Vic Chrissie is getting quite flustered. They're sitting in the kitchen.
"Sharon I don't know where he is, how many times do I have to explain, he left me for another woman!"
"Yeah right Chrissie, do you really expect me to believe you? He just got up and walked out of this place? The place he fought so hard to get back? I don't think so! Now tell me the truth, where is he?"
"What do you want to know for anyway, didn't think you'd want to see him after what he did to split you and Dennis up."
"He's my dad Chrissie and there's something important that I need to speak to him about and I aint got the time to waste messing around with you telling me lies!"
"Sharon darling, calm down." Dennis is starting to get worried about her as she's screaming at Chrissie.
"Dennis i'm fine, i'll be even better if she told me where he was." Chrissie gets up from the kitchen table and walks over to the sink and leans against it.

"Do you really want to know where Den is? Do you?" Sharon looks at Dennis and then back at Chrissie,
"This is the reason i'm here Chrissie, I want to know where my dad is."
"He's dead."

Part 5.


"Dead? What do you mean dead?" Sharon was in shock. Chrissie turned around and faced her.
"He's dead, you know stone cold...six foot under dead." Dennis looked at Sharon who had tears in her eyes.
"Chrissie are you sure about this? I mean no one else seems to know about this and surely you would have tried contacting me, Sharon and Vicki if he was dead."
"No one knows about it." Sharon gets up from the table and paces back and forwards in the kitchen.
"Huh! You expect me to believe that? That my dad is dead and no one even notices? Why won't you tell me where he is for?"
"Sharon i'm telling you the truth. Den's dead and he won't be bothering either of us again."

Sharon couldn't quite get her head around this. How come Den was dead and no one knew?
"What happened? How did he die? Why does no one know?" Sharon couldn't help the questions rolling off her tongue.
"One at a time Sharon, this is hard for me as well you know."
"Forgive me if I don't quite believe that Chrissie."
"Do you want to know what happened Sharon? It was that night you came back, after he had spoken to you he came back and he was in no mood to talk. He turned violent Sharon, you know how he could be. He went for me and Zoe-" Sharon interrupted Chrissie before she could say anything else.
"Zoe? What has Zoe got to do with this?"
"Zoe killed him. She grabbed the nearest thing to her and smashed him over the head. She thought he was going to kill me, she only did it to protect me."
There was silence for a few seconds and Dennis says,
"I take it shes got away with killing him as well as seen as no one knows he's dead?" Sharon stops abruptly and turns on Chrissie.
"You mean my dads killer is still out there walking the streets? Setting up her stall and filling the heads of others with lies?"
"Sharon calm down, you've got to understand that I couldn't send Zoe to prison, she was protecting me."
"If you loved my dad you would have wanted to have seen justice done but oh no not you Chrissie, you'd rather go on living a lie and letting everyone think that you are the innocent one in all of this and that dad is the evil one for leaving you!! And don't get me started on Zoe." Sharon looks at Dennis who goes over to her and puts his arms around her and holds her tight. He can't bear to see her like this.

Sharon moves away from Dennis after awhile and turns back to face Chrissie.
"Where is he? His body, where is it?"
"Sharon don't do this, it's only going to make you upset."
"Chrissie I want to know what you did to his body. Now tell me where it is!"
"It's in the cellar."

Part 6.

"The cellar? You left him in the cellar?" Sharon was really angry now. She couldn't believe that her dad was dead again and that Chrissie was standing infront of her telling her about it so calmly. Sharon just wanted to shout and scream at her and hit her but she didn't want to risk losing her baby.
"We had some builders in, they were doing something with the floor and had it dug up so we buried him and then filled it with cement."
"I can't get my head around this? You killed my dad and then buried him in his own pub?!" Even though Sharon hated her dad for what he did to split her and Dennis up she still loved him, still cared about him and had hoped that he would have been happy for her and Dennis now that they were going to become parents. She would never know now.

"Sharon I know this is hard but you've got to understand, we had to act quickly and that was the easiest option."
"How do you sleep at night Chrissie? Knowing Den is only downstairs? You disgust me."
"Sharon it isn't easy, do you really think that I wanted my dead husband to be buried in the pub? I lie awake everynight thinking about him down in the cellar."
"Take me down there, I want to see where he is." Dennis looked at Sharon, he didn't think she should be doing this. He didn't want to see her get too upset, not when there was someone else to think about now.
"Do you really think thats a good idea darling? Your upset now nevermind if you go down there."
"Dennis I have to do this. I lost my dad all those years ago and got him back now i've lost him again. This time its for good. Trust me, I need to see it." Chrissie was staring at Sharon not knowing what to say.
"I'll show you."

Sharon and Dennis followed Chrissie down the stairs and into the cellar. As soon as they were in Sharon looked to the floor and could see a freshly cemented part.
"Is that where he's at?" Sharon pointed to the part of the floor.
"Yes he's in there."
"Who put him in there? Did Zoe help you? Cover up her murder?"
"No Sharon, it wasn't like that. Me and Sam had to protect her."
"SAM! I thought no one knew about this and it turns out half the bloody square committed the crime! Sam helped you did she?"
"Yes, Zoe was in no fit state, she was inconsolable, she didn't mean to kill him Sharon."
"So why not go to the police and tell them what happened? She was protecting you, if it happened the way you said it did."
"It did Sharon, she didn't go out to deliberately kill him."
"So why didn't you go to the police? You've made it a whole lot worse for yourself now, burying him! You were trying to cover it up and i'm sure the police will be very interested to here about your involvement in all of this."
Chrissie flew into a rage, she went for Sharon who was standing over the other side of the cellar. Dennis stepped infront of Sharon to protect her from the flying arms of Chrissie.
"Stop it! If you don't stop all this we're going straight to the police!"
"Sharon please don't. If you're honest with yourself no one is missing him not being around. He never did anything to help others so why tell them? Don't you think we're all sufferring enough? Zoe couldn't cope with being in prison."
"Don't you mean you couldn't Chrissie? Don't try to fool me and make me feel sorry for Zoe because you'll be trying for a hell of a long time after what she did to Dennis!" Sharon stops and a thought comes into her head.

"Chrissie, I won't involve the police."
"Sharon I can't thank you enough-"
"Let me finish Chrissie. I won't involve the police if you give me the Vic back."

"I can't."
"Can't or won't Chrissie?" Chrissie looks at Sharon and then at Dennis.
"I can't give you what you want Sharon."
"I don't see why not. It's in yours and dads name aint it?"
"No its not. Legally half was in my name and half in Dens but not no more."
"What do you mean?"
"Well Den didn't get this place by being nicey nice to Sam Mitchell you know Sharon. He did some underhand things to get his hands on this place and I just couldn't live with myself for what he had done and signed my half over to Sam. Obviously no one can get Dens half so thats why i'm still here, as his wife."
"Sam? Forgive me for being harsh here Chrissie but I can't see you doing something nice for Sam Mitchell for nothing, not in a million years."
"Well maybe it wasn't like that but the matter of fact is that I don't have anything to give you. Sam owns half and Den owns the other half and you can't really ask Den for his now can you?"

Sharon couldn't believe what she was hearing. She had thought that this might have been the chance for her and Dennis to get what they had wanted. She so wanted to raise her child in the place she was brought up and now that hope and dream was slipping out of her fingers at a rapid pace.
"What if i was to talk to Sam? She might sell me her half, I won't have to worry about Dad coming back or anything, it'll be mine to run won't it?" Dennis looked at Sharon and could see how much this meant to her.
"Darling I don't think this is meant to be. Maybe we should just leave this. We don't need to have the Vic to be happy, we could start afresh, move somewhere else."
"Dennis no. This is my home and i'm not going to be pushed out of it. I want this place back and i'm going to get it back, don't worry about that. Come on, we're going."
"Where we going?"
"To pay Sam a visit."

Part 8.

Dennis and Sharon were walking across the Square towards Sam's flat. Sharon had no idea what she was going to say to Sam. From the other side of the Square a voice shouted,
"DENNIS!" Dennis and Sharon both stopped in their tracks. Both of them knew who the voice belonged to. Dennis turned to Sharon,
"I'll handle this."
"Dennis i'm here with you, we'll handle it together, like we will everything from now on."
They both turned round in the direction of the voice and were faced with the sight of Charlie and Big Mo coming towards them. Dennis knew that he would have to face them sooner or later but wished that it was later. He couldn't believe everything that had happened since this morning. He had only returned to the Square himself yesterday after hearing from his solicitor that Andy had left him the bookies. Since returning yesterday he hadn't clapped eyes on anyone apart from Pat in the bookies, which suited him down to the ground. The last person he wanted to see was Zoe or any of her family.
"What do you want Charlie? I'm busy right now, can this not wait?"
"Can it wait? It bloody well can't, not after what you did to my Zoe, leaving her high and dry with a baby on the way, not what a decent man does!"
"Charlie I think you want to get your facts right before accusing me of anything. Come on Sharon, I haven't got the time to listen to this." Dennis and Sharon started walking away.
"Get back here now Dennis, i'm not finished with you."
"Well i am with you, for the time being anyway. If you really want to know what happened, meet us in the Vic tonight and i'll fill you in!" With that they turned and carried on their journey.

They got to the door of Sam's flat and pressed the doorbell. It was awhile before they heard footsteps coming to the door. The door was opened by Sam who stood there with her mouth open at the sight infront of her.
"Sharon. I wasn't expecting you back."
"No, I bet you weren't!"

Part 9.

"Can we come in or do you want to do this out on the doorstep for everyone to see and hear?"
"You'd better come inside." Sam pushed open the door and Sharon and Dennis entered the flat. They all walked into the living room.
"What's all this about Sharon?" Sam was hoping it wasn't about Den.
"Oh I think you know what its about. The part you had in killing my dad."
"Sharon...I don't know where you've heard that from."
"Don't try and cover yourself Sam, we know everything, we've even seen where you and Chrissie buried him." Sam stood there in silence, she couldn't believe Chrissie had told them, not after everything she had done to try and stop Zoe from going to the police.
"Whats she said?"
"That Zoe killed him and you and her buried him and then covered it all up."
"So not the truth then." Dennis was sick of this. He had only got Sharon back this morning and they were already being faced with this drama. Den had a lot to answer for, he was even coming between them from the grave. He so wanted to take Sharon home, make her put her feet up and start planning their future together but she was more concerned with dealing with Sam and Chrissie than anything else.

"Sharon do we really need to listen to all of this, can we not just go home and forget about the whole thing. I mean come on, if you're honest with yourself what Chrissie said about no one missing him is right. I didn't think you would care where he was after what he did to us."
"Dennis, hes my dad and i'm going to find out what happened. If you don't understand then i'm sorry but its something i've got to do." Sharon turned back to face Sam.
"The truth. Come on then, tell me your version of the truth, see how much it differs from Chrissie's."
"Oh not much. Part of what Chrissie told you is the truth but not about Zoe killing Den. She did hit him, he went for Chrissie and Zoe belted him and knocked him out. Zoe went upstairs and I saw Den wake and grab Chrissie's leg and she hit him again and killed him. It wasn't Zoe who killed your dad, it was Chrissie."
"You expect me to believe that? I suppose if I go over and speak to Zoe she'll say you did it!"
"Its the truth Sharon. What have I got to gain from lying to you?"
"Whats this about you owning half the pub?"
"Yeah I own half of it, Den cheated me out of it and I intend to get my other half back somehow as well."
"I don't think so. You see Sam, I want MY pub back and I intend to get it back."
"You'll never get my half Sharon."
"I don't think you've got any choice there Sam. You see i'm not the one who was involved in covering up a murder. I might just want justice done for my dads killing and it won't be just Chrissie and Zoe who go down, you will to, for a very long time."
"You wouldn't, like Dennis said, no one's missing him." Dennis stood up from the sofa. He could see Sharon needed support and he was going to support her on everything from now on, he wasn't going to risk losing her again.
"Sam I think you need to think about this. What me and Sharon know could put you away for a very long time. Your in your prime now but just think, by the time you're out you'll be middle aged, maybe even too old to have children. Is that what you want?"
"No Dennis it isn't but that pub belongs in my family."
"We'll pay good money for it Sam, you could buy somewhere else, start afresh."
"How much?" Sharon looks at Dennis. Dennis looks at Sam.
"£100,000." Sharon looked at Dennis in amazement.
"Are you sure we can afford that much?"
"Sharon I want this as much as you and i'm sure. What do you say Sam? £100,000, lot of money to be turning down."
"And you won't tell the police? Den will stay where he is?"
"We won't tell the police."
"Well its a deal then." Sharon looked at Dennis. She really couldn't believe that she was one step closer to getting her dream.
"I'll get my solicitor to draw the contracts up and i'll bring them over as soon as they're ready Sam." Sam showed them both to the door and she said to Sharon,
"None of us planned it to happen Sharon, it just did."
"Yeah well, whats done is done." She turned and walked into the Square with Dennis's arm around her shoulders.

Part 10.

Sharon and Dennis had gone from Sam's to their flat and had gone straight to the bedroom where they hadn't surfaced for hours. Dennis is lying with Sharon in his arms.
"I'm scared that this is all just a dream and that everythings going to disappear when I wake up."
"Oh darling, believe me its not a dream! I can't believe we did it Dennis, we've got the pub back."
"Not all of it we haven't. We've only got Sam's half, what about Den's? What we gonna do about that?"
"Well i'll be damned if I'm only owning half. We'll have to think of something."
"What about Chrissie?"
"What about her?"
"Well we can't just throw her out can we? I mean the Vic's her livelyhood and her home."
"We'll see that she's alright."

An hour later they are dressed and are sitting on the sofa. Sharon is on the sofa talking to her solicitor on her mobile.
"And it'll be all drawn up straight away? Yes thats right, £100,000. Yes Samantha Mitchell." Dennis can't stop staring at Sharon, he can't believe how much love he has for her. He would never hurt a hair on her head and would kill anyone who tried to. When she walked out of his life those few months back he never dreamt that she would be back here with him, let alone be carrying his child. Not even Sharon had thought that possible. He knew that this might be their one and only chance of having their own baby, Sharon might never conceive again and he wanted to make sure that Sharon got whatever she wanted.
"That's great, i'll see you tomorrow. Thanks, bye." Sharon hung up.
"Contracts being drawn up now as we speak, solicitor is going to drop it round tomorrow morning. What are you smiling at?"
"You. Look at you, planning our whole future and all I can do is sit and stare at you."
"Yeah well we don't have long, the baby will be here sooner than we think you know."
"I know and I can't wait. Ready? Come on then, lets go for a drink."

They head out of the flat and across to the Vic. They know what is going to be waiting for them inside. Dennis pushes open the door and sees Charlie at the bar with Big Mo. He scans the room further and sees Dot, Pauline, Derek, Yolande and Patrick sitting in the far corner. At the pool table there is Martin, Sonia and Mickey. Alfie and Little Mo are sitting at another table. Over at the far end of the bar Zoe is stood talking to Sam. Chrissie is talking to a man over the bar. The room goes quiet when they enter. Dot gets up from her seat and rushes over to them.
"Dennis, Sharon, what can I get you."
"A vodka and a white wine Dot please." Sharon and Dennis are handed their drinks by Chrissie. Sharon hasn't taken her eyes off Zoe. Charlie comes upto Dennis.
"Now what was all that about getting my facts right? The fact is that you left my Zoe alone with a baby on the way."
"She had a baby on the way did she?"
"You know she did, it were your flaming baby!"
"My baby? MY baby? Are you sure about that Charlie. Why don't you ask Zoe." Dennis turns to face Zoe.
"Don't Dennis, please don't do this."
"Do what Zoe, what is he going on about?"
"Dad just leave it, please." Zoe starts crying. Dennis hates her for what she did at Christmas, he will never forgive her for splitting him and Sharon up. He knows Den pushed her into it but she could have said no.
"I bet you all think what an awful person I am for leaving poor little Zoe with a baby. Well think again. Poor little Zoe wasn't being very truthful when she told me and everyone else that she was having my baby, were you Zoe? Coz infact, you weren't having anyone's baby coz you weren't even pregnant!"
A hushed murmour started, everyone whispering between themselves.
"Is this true Zoe? You weren't pregnant? You didn't have a miscarriage?"
Everyone turned and looked at Zoe. Dennis interrupted her before she could say anything.
"Oh there's more Charlie. Your little angel of a daughter isn't as angelic as you like to think. If thats not bad enough try sleeping with my own father!"
"You dirty trollop! Hes old enough to be yer father!" Big Mo couldn't hide her disgust any longer. Charlie looked at his daughter.
"Zoe, is this true? What Dennis is saying?" Zoe started crying even more and ran out of the Vic. Dennis looked at Charlie.
"I think you've got your answer there." He downed his drink and turned to Sharon.
"Can we go home now darling? Have a nice night in. Pizza, bottle of wine, well maybe another glass for you and thats all."
"That sounds lovely darling but I want to speak to Chrissie first." Sharon walks over towards Chrissie.
"Can we have a word upstairs?"

Part 11.

"Come on up." Sharon and Dennis go round behind the bar and follow Chrissie upstairs. She leads them into the living room where she sits down and looks up at Sharon.
"Whats this about. Sit down." Sharon sits in the armchair and Dennis purches himself on the arm of it. They both look at Chrissie.
"Sam is selling us her share of the Vic."
"She's what? I thought this place meant so much to her and her flaming family, thats all shes harped on about for the past few months and then she goes and sells it!"
"Yes she has and now we want Dad's half."
"But thats impossible Sharon, hes dead or had you forgot?"
"How could I forget that his so called wife watched him have his brain bashed in and then bury him in the cellar of his own pub? I wont forget that in a long time!"
"Sharon that night you came back I was trying to get Den to sign the Vic over to me, I had had all the papers drawn up and everything. I mean I already owned half but I wanted full control of it. He wouldn't sign it."
"Have you still got the papers?"
"Yeah somewhere. Why?"
"Doesn't matter. I'll get my solicitor to draw up a new contract where Dad signs his half over to me." Chrissie looks at Sharon in disgust. She had always thought of Sharon as her friend, she had tried to get on with her for Den's sake but had always been jealous of the special relationship Sharon shared with her Dad.

"But Den isn't here to sign them." Dennis looks at Sharon.
"We forge his signature Chrissie. Doesn't take a genius to do that now does it. Me and Sharon want this and nothing is going to stop us."
"It's forgery though, you could get into trouble."
"You're going to sign it Chrissie."
"No I won't! Den wouldn't want this, not you two together under this roof. I'm not doing it." Sharon stares at Chrissie.
"Chrissie, Sam has sold us her share of the Vic to keep the police out of this. What have you done? Nothing. Now do you want us to contact the police and tell them where to find Den Watts or will you do this?"
"What about me though? This is my home and my livelyhood. If I don't have this place i'll have nothing, nowhere to go." Sharon looks at Dennis.
"Come outside a minute Dennis, I need a word." Sharon and Dennis go out onto the landing and close the door.
"Dennis i've thought of the perfect solution. We give her the flat, she can have that, move in there."
"Our flat? But thats ours Sharon. Its our special place."
"Dennis this will be our special place once we get it. We'll spend the rest of our lives together here with our baby. What do you say?"
"She mightn't go for it."
"Theres nothing else on offer is there?"

Dennis and Sharon re-enter the living room. Chrissie is stood looking out of the window over to the market. She turns around when she hears the door opening.
"Chrissie if you do this for me and Dennis you can have our flat. I'll get my solicitor to draw the contract up and we'll give you the flat. We wouldn't see you homeless."
"What about my job though?"
"There are plenty of bars and clubs around here Chrissie, you'll easily get a job."
"But this is my pub."
"Not anymore it isn't." Chrissie turns and stares out of the window for a few minutes.
"Right i'll do it but there will never be any police involved. We'll all continue to think that Den ran off with another woman. Ok?"
"Ok with us. I'll get the contracts drawn up." Sharon and Dennis turn and walk out of the room.

Chrissie is left sitting on the sofa crying. Shes been left with nothing because of that man. She hates his guts and wished that she had never married him. She was happy out in Spain, she had a great life until she met Den.

Part 12


The next morning Sharon received the contracts from her solicitor. She was going over them at the breakfast table whilst Dennis was reading the paper.
Sharon looked up at Dennis and smiled. She couldn't believe that her dream was coming true. She was having a baby that she never dreamt she could have with the man she loved with all of her heart and they were going to be living in the Vic. Life had dealt her some cruel blows in the past but everything was perfect now.
"I love you Dennis." Dennis looked up from the paper at Sharon.
"I love you too."

Half an hour later Sharon had been dressed and was putting her jacket on in the hallway. Dennis was standing next to her with the contracts in his hand.
"Where are we going first?"
"Sams. I want to get this over and done with first, at least that way we'll have half the Vic if Chrissie backs out."
"Will you get the police involved if she doesn't?"
"Of course not Dennis. If i'm honest they've all done us a favour. After what he did to us I don't think I would want him knowing our child." It was hard for Sharon to admit that but she knew deep down that if her dad was still around he would try his hardest to spoil things for her and Dennis.
Dennis locked the door behind them and they set off for Sams. He pressed the doorbell and within a couple of seconds Sam answered.
"I wasn't expecting you this early, i'm not even ready.
"I want to get this over with Sam and move on, we need to get things moving as quickly as possible."
"Why so quickly?"
"You'll find out soon enough." Sam lead them into the living room and sat on the sofa. Sharon handed her the contract and Sam took her time and read it through.
"So when will I get the money?"
"As soon as you sign it I will take it back to my solicitor who will draw up the deeds and then the money will be transfered into your account."
"Good." Sam read the last page and then reached for the pen.
"What's happening with Chrissie?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well I can't see you getting along together when you're both trying to run the pub."
"Shes not going to be there much longer. Shes agreed to move out and live in our flat."
"Chrissie giving the pub up that easily?!" Sharon didn't answer this question.
Sam looked back down to the contract and signed it. After everything she had been through to get the pub back, it was back in the hands of the Watt's again.

Sharon and Dennis walked over to the Vic from Sams.
"What will we do if Chrissie doesn't sign it Dennis? We need the pub to raise our child in."
"She'll sign it Sharon, i'm sure she will. If not we'll offer her money as well as the flat, that might make her change her mind."
"Yeah." They walk into the Vic and Chrissie sees them. She signals for them to come round the back of the bar.
"Upstairs." Chrissie leads the way into the kitchen and she sits down at the table.
"I take it you've got the contract sorted? Lets have a look." Sharon had had the solicitor draw up the contract stating that Den had signed his half of the pub over to Sharon for nothing. There was another one signing the deeds of the flat over to Chrissie. Chrissie was reading it when Sharon said,
"We thought you might have changed your mind about doing it."
"Why would I do that? I'll be glad to get rid of the place what with him being downstairs. No, I think the best thing for me is if I move into my new flat and get on with my life."
"Thats what we all want Chrissie. You might think i'm being a heartless bitch wanting this place back but you out of all people will understand why. Me and Dennis are having a baby!"
"What? I thought you couldn't?"
"Thats what we thought. We want to raise our child in the Vic Chrissie, I grew up here and I want our child to as well. Can you understand? I'm not doing this to be nasty."
"I understand Sharon." Chrissie practices Den's signature on a piece of paper and then signs the contract.
"There, all done. This place is yours now, make the most of it you two."

Sharon looked at Dennis and smiled. She had everything now and wasn't going to mess up this time.
"When do you want me out by?"
"We've got to pack our things together as well so say a few days?"
"Ok." Dennis and Sharon walked out of the Vic and back to the flat. They would have to start telling people the news about the baby as Sharon was starting to show. Right now all they could think about was jumping into bed together and celebrating the fact that they were back where they belonged, in the Vic.

Part 13.

The next couple of days went by in a blur. All they had seemed to do was pack and then unpack everything again over at the Vic. Sharon was putting out photos of Vicki on the sideboard in the sitting room. Dennis came up behind her and put his arms around her waist and nibbled her ear.
"Dennis!"
"What? I can't help it if I find you irresistable!" Chrissie had moved all of her belongings over to her new flat a couple of hours earlier. Dennis had helped her carry the boxes over and left her to sort things out.
"You know darling, we're going to have some explaining to do."
"What do you mean?"
"Well when everyone find out we have the pub back, they're going to wonder whats gone on. And the baby, you're starting to show and I think its about time we let people know."
"Yeah, people will start guessing soon when they see me but about the pub all we have to do is say Chrissie sold it to us, they'd never question that, they've got no reason to do so. I do feel sorry for Chrissie though. I mean shes lost everything because of dad."
"I know, all shes got is the flat. Maybe she could come and work here still? I mean in a few months you won't be able to work behind the bar the size you will be and when our baby's born you'll be with it."
"I never thought about it like that. Maybe Chrissie might come back, I mean she might have something lined up already but I might ask her."

The day had been a long one to say the least. Telling everyone that Sharon was pregnant made them both feel really happy and excited but it was exhausting telling every person individually and answering all the questions that came afterwards. They had both locked up and were lying on the sofa together in the sitting room.
"That was exhausting! We should have hired a loud speaker to drive around the square and shout the news out, would have been easier!"
"Yeah but I prefered to see the look on their faces, especially Dot's! She was so pleased for us Sharon. If you agree I would like her to be our baby's godmother, she has looked out for me so many times, ever since I arrived here and I know she will do the same for our baby."
"Dennis thats a lovely idea, I think she'll be over the moon."

Sharon had a restless night. Everytime she drifted off to sleep she would wake up startled. Dennis slept like a baby, he didn't notice Sharon tossing and turning all night.

"No Dennis, hardly slept a wink, tossed and turned all night."
"What for? Was it the baby?"
"Oh no, baby was fine. Its dad."
"What about him?"
"He has to be moved, I can't go on living here with him downstairs."

Part 14

Dennis looked at Sharon, not quite taking in what she had just said. He loved Sharon and would do anything to make her happy.
"Move him? Sweetheart hes buried under six foot of concrete, not as if I can dig him up with a shovel without anyone noticing."
"Dennis i'm not stupid and I know that what i'm asking is a lot but I can't go on with him down there, not when our baby is born. Do you really want him under the same roof as our baby?"
"No I don't but what are we going to say? More importantly, what are we going to do with him when we've dug him up?"
"I don't know, haven't thought that far ahead yet. We need to move quickly though. You'll be able to hack your way through the concrete, even if it takes a couple of days, at least I know that he'll be gone in a few days."
"Are you sure you want to do this? What about Chrissie and Sam, what will they think?"
"They'll understand and its not as if we're going to turn them in or anything, we'll throw him in the canal where he should have stayed."

Sharon got out of bed and put her dressing gown on and walked into the kitchen. She filled the kettle and set it boil. She got four slices of bread out of the bread bin and put them in the toaster. Dennis appeared at the doorway.
"I'll move him tonight. Best to get it over and done with, can't be having you not sleeping, not when you're expecting our precious one."
"Dennis, don't forget about my scan later today, thats more important than dad."
"I wouldn't forget about that darling, going to find out whether we're having a boy or a girl."
"Do you really want to know? Do you not want it to be a secret?"
"I want to know, I can't wait Sharon, i'm going to be a dad!"
"I don't want to know what it is, I want to wait and see."
"Don't worry darling, I won't breathe a word, it'll be my little secret."

Later in the afternoon Dennis came back to the Vic to find Chrissie behind the bar with Sharon.
"Take it you spoke to Chrissie then?"
"Yeah, shes agreed to work here till she finds something else."
"At least it'll give us chance to find someone else before the baby is born."
"Well I was thinking that if you worked here behind the bar we won't need anyone else, not with Tracy and Little Mo."
"I've got the bookies though darling."
"Pat seems to be doing a good enough job with that. You won't be here all the time you know."
"I'll be with you and our baby most of the time, want to spend most of the time with the two most precious things in my life."
"Did you get things sorted?"
"Yeah i'll pick the stuff up after we've been to the hospital. We best be making a move now darling, don't want to be late." Sharon went and got her coat and told Chrissie and Little Mo that she was popping out. They both got into a taxi and headed for the hospital.

Part 15

They walked through the hospital corridors and found the department they needed to be in. Sharon had always dreamt of coming here for this reason but never thought that she would actually be doing it. They booked in at the reception desk and took a seat in the waiting area. Dennis took hold of Sharons hand and gave it a little squeeze. She looked up and into his eyes and could tell how excited he was. She smiled at him lovingly.
"Miss Watts." A nurse with short hair and glasses was standing near the reception desk with a file in her hand. Sharon and Dennis both stood up and followed her down the corridor and into a room.

"If you would just pop yourself up onto the bed Miss Watts and we'll do your ultrasound. If you'd just like to take a sit there." She looked at Dennis and pointed to the chair next to the bed. Sharon got up onto the bed and the nurse undid her trousers and lowered them to her waist. Dennis took hold of Sharons hand again and held it tight. He was so excited, all he was hoping for was that the baby was healthy. The nurse squeezed gel onto Sharons stomach and spread it around with the scanner. She looked closely at the monitor for a couple of minutes and then smiled.
"You're about 20 weeks pregnant Miss Watts, everything looks fine. Do you want to know the sex of the baby?"
"I don't but Dennis does. I want it to be a surprise so hes promised not to tell me."
"Ah right, well we'll leave you to get yourself dressed and if you follow me outside Sir i'll give you the good news."

Dennis followed the nurse outside and she turned and looked at him.
"I'm pleased to tell you that you're expecting a girl. A healthy little girl."
Dennis couldn't believe what he had just been told. Sharon had made hs dream come true, he was going to have a family of his own. Sharon came to the doorway.
"Is it safe to come out now?" Dennis turned and took her in his arms and hugged her tightly. The nurse walked off and left them alone.
"I'm so happy Sharon, you're giving me everything I have every dreamt about. I'm so proud of you."
"Whats got into you?!"
"You! The baby! Everything! I can't believe that everything has worked out for us."
"I know, after everything dad did to split us up. He'll be turning in his grave as we speak now."
"Yeah well not for long as he'll be gone by tonight."

Part 16

Sharon and Dennis got a taxi back to the Vic. Sharon got out of the taxi and turned to Dennis.
"Will you be long?"
"No not too long sweetheart, be back before locking up."
"Ok, see you then." Sharon shut the car door and watched it drive down the market. She turned and walked into the Vic.

Dennis arrived back an hour before locking up and gave Sharon a hand behind the bar and collecting glasses. He couldn't keep his eyes off her, he loved her so much and wa already feeling so protective of his unborn daughter that he would kill anyone who tried to harm either of them.
Sharon locked the doors after the last drinker had left and turned and hugged Dennis.
"I love you Dennis. I can't believe that this time a couple of months ago we were so many miles apart and now look at us. Expecting our first baby, being back in the Vic, back in each others arms. I just can't believe how lucky I am. There's just one thing spoiling it."
"And i'm going to sort that now. Go upstairs and get into bed, I don't want you to be down here when im doing it."
"But I want to be with you, I can't expect you to do this on your own."
"Its not going to be a pretty sight and I don't want you to see it. I'm fine on my own darling. Now the sooner you go upstairs, the sooner I can get started."
"Ok but i'm coming with you when you've got him in the car."
"Sharon no. You're not going to be part of this in any way. What if someone sees something? I don't want both of us ending up behind bars, I want you to be looking after that precious baby inside of you."
"Oh Dennis maybe this is a bad idea, maybe if I jsut get used to the idea that hes here and always will be."
"I'm not going to let him come between us and our little-"
"What were you going to say there?"
"Nothing!"
"You were going to say little boy or little girl! Just stopped yourself in time though."
"I know." Dennis turned and switched the bar lights off and followed Sharon through to the back.
"Go on up. It'll be over with soon." Sharon walked up the stairs and went into her bedroom. She knew Dennis loved her and would do anything for her, which he had proved to her numerous times.

Dennis went into the cellar. He had placed all the tools in there when he had come back. He started hacking at the concrete which was even harder than he thought it would have been. He knew that he had to do this, he had to get rid of him once and for all. He carried on hacking at the concrete for 10 minutes and stopped. He was making too much noise and he wasn't sure what people would think. If it was coming from the Vic they would get suspicious. He turned and walked upstairs and into the bedroom where Sharon was lying curled up in bed.
"I'll have to do it tomorrow darling, making too much noise."
"What will we tell people though?"
"That we've got a problem with the drains or something, they'll never know."
"We'll have to keep Little Mo and Chrissie out of the cellar tomorrow then."
"Well that can be your job coz you still not going anywhere near there till hes gone."

Part 17

A couple of days later Dennis was nearly ready to remove Den's body from underneath the concrete. It had taken him ages to dig the concrete up. Chrissie had asked Sharon what they were doing in the cellar earlier in the day.
"We're getting rid of him."
"Den?"
"Yes, I can't go on living here with him in there. Dennis is diggin him up and we're getting rid of him."
"But where are you going to take him?"
"To the canal where he should have stayed all those years ago."
"What if someone sees you."
"Don't worry Chrissie, no one will."

Dennis waited till the pub had been locked up and Sharon was tuked up in bed before he removed the body into the back of his car. The smell was horrible when he finally unearthed the body. He dragged the body out and placed it into the boot of his car. He placed an old rug from the living room over the top of the body to cover it up. All he had to do now was to drive to the canal and dump the body.

He closed the boot of the car and started to walk around to the drivers door. He looked up and saw two police officers making their way over to him.....

Part 18

"Good evening Sir. Bit late for you to be out and about. Do you mind if I ask what you are doing?"
"Of course not. But can I ask that we talk quietly as if my partner wakes up it'll spoil her surprise."
"Surprise?" The policeman started walking around Dennis's car looking at the tyres and at the tax disk. Everything was in order.
"Me and my partner are expecting our first child in a couple of months time and i'm doing the nursery out as a surprise. She has no idea and this is the only time I can get rid of the rubbish and things without her seeing. She's tucked up in bed right now with not a care in the world. She hasn't got a clue what is going on."
"We're sorry for bothering you Sir, just keeping an eye on the Square. Good luck with the surprise." The two police officers walk away over to the other end of the Square. Dennis climbs into the drivers side of the car and sits and lets out the biggest sigh of his life. He thought that he was going to be caught. Tears start rolling down his cheeks. Just the thought of being taken away from Sharon and his daughter hit him hard. He wipes the tears away with the back of his hand and starts the car engine.

He drives out of the market and along roads he had travelled on numerous times before. It took him half an hour to reach the canal. He pulled up in a parking bay not far from the side of the canal. Dennis got out of the car and walked to the edge of the canal. He looked around and could see no one around. The body was heavier than he remembered when he had carried it to the boot. He struggled getting it out of the boot but once he had he dragged it over the pavement and slowly rolled it into the canal so it minimised the splash when it entered the water. Dennis stood and watched the body sink to the bottom of the canal and turned and shut the boot of the car.

The drive back to Walford was quicker than the drive out and as he pulled up at the Vic he looked up to the window where Sharon would be sleeping. He had done all of this for her, gotten rid of Den's body. He would do a lot worse if it meant keeping Sharon happy and safe.

Part 19

Dennis woke with a start. His forehead was covered in sweat and his head was throbbing. He turned and saw Sharon sleeping peacfully next to him. He got out of bed and went to the kitchen and made himself a cup of coffee. He sat at the table and put his head in his hands. Getting rid of Den's body had shook him up more than he had expected it to. He heard footsteps across the landing and Sharon popped her head around the door.
"You okay darling?"
"I'm fine, you just go back to bed."
"Dennis you don't look fine. What is it? Is it dad?"
"There were police outside tonight"
"What? Oh Dennis, they didn't see you did they?"
"Yes they did but I made up some excuse and I think they believed it. Don't think I was followed but it'll just be a matter of time if someone saw me."
"Don't talk like that Dennis, its going to be ok, I know it will. We haven't got dad hanging over us anymore, we can live here and raise our child without him anywhere near us."
"I know sweetheart, just shook me up seeing the police, I just don't want anything to go wrong with us. You and the baby mean the world to me and i'm never going to let you two down the way he let us down."
Sharon walked over to Dennis and draped her arms around his shoulders.
"I know you'll never let me down Dennis, just look at what you've done for me already."

Dennis went back to bed and left Sharon to clean up after their coffee. She couldn't wait for a few months down the road when she would give birth to their first child and hold it in her arms with Dennis beside her.
Sharon went downstairs and started to get the bar ready for opening time. The door opened and Chrissie came in to start her shift. She looked at Sharon.
"Is it done? Is he gone?"
"Yes, last night. Hes no longer hanging over us anymore."
"And he wasn't seen?"
"No he wasn't. Its over Chrissie. Lets just put this all behind us and move on shall we?"

Part 20

A week had gone by since Dennis had gotten rid of Den's body and Sharon had slept soundly every night. He was round at the bookies helping Pat get the days float in the till ready for opening time.
"How's Sharon? Has the morning sickness stopped?"
"She never really had it Pat. I still can't believe that it has happened. Christmas seems like a life time ago."
"Yeah well Den has got a lot to answer for if he ever returns." Dennis didn't look at Pat. He knew that Den would never be returning to the Square.

The day went by quickly and before he knew it he was locking the bookies up and walking to the Vic. It was the first time he'd spent the day away from the Vic since he got rid of Den's body. He'd wanted to be around Sharon incase Chrissie said anything to her. He needn't have worried though as Chrissie hadn't mentioned it since the morning after.

He got to the Minute Mart and Patrick was coming out with Yolande behind him.
"I wonder who it is. Poor fella." Dennis carried on walking to the pub. He pushed open the door and looked for Sharon. He saw her standing behind the bar pulling a pint for Jim. Chrissie was serving Keith and Rosie at the other end of the bar. Patrick and Yolande followed Dennis into the pub. They walked over to a table where Pauline and Dot were sitting. Dennis could hear the sound of surprise in Pauline's voice. He walked towards the table and could hear the conversation clearer.
"A body?"
"Yes a body."
"Well when did they find it?"
"Last night. There was police everywhere."
"Where was it found?"
"The canal."

Part 21

Dennis turned and looked at Sharon whose face had turned pale. She turned and ran out of the bar and out into the back. Dennis ran after her. He found her sitting on the stairs with her head in her hands.
"Dennis this is it. They've found him. What are we going to do?" Dennis sank to his knees infront of her and took ahold of her hands.
"I don't know darling. I was afraid that this might happen. Now it has I just cant get my head around it.
"Are you sure we heard right?"
"Well we both heard the same thing, we both can't be mistaken can we?"
"Oh Dennis just when things were going right for us its all starting to go wrong."
"Sharon don't panic. We don't know for sure that they'll be able to connect it with us, we weren't the ones who killed him remember. He was rather decomposed darling."
"Yeah but when they do the tests they do and find out its dad where is the first place they're going to come? Here, exactly and what are they going to find? A freshly cemented part of the floor in the cellar and then they're going to put two and two together and think that we're involved!"
"Calm down Sharon, its no good worrying about it until we no for definite that it is Den."
"Oh come on Dennis, how many other bodies have been dumped in the canal in the past week?"
"Go upstairs and have a lie down, me and Tracy will keep an eye on the bar."

Dennis watched Sharon turn and walk upstairs and he went back out into the bar. He went over to Dot and Jim's table to collect the empty glasses and the conversation was still on the body in the canal.
"They don't know how long it had been there but they said they had been dead for awhile. Eee Dennis have you heard about this poor fellow they found in the canal?"
"No Dot, aint heard a thing."
"Well there were police everywhere, down the other end of town near that part of the canal. A boat had tugged on netting and they found the body there. You don't expect things like this to happen on your own doorstep."
"Im sure its nothing Dot, could turn out to be something else."
"No Dennis, they took it away in a body bag." Dennis turned and walked back to the bar and placed the empty glasses on the counter. He hoped it turned out to be nothing.

Part 22

The following day Dennis was walking to the Bookies to open up with Pat. He walked past the Minute Mart where the board outside advertised the headline of the local newspaper.
"MAN FOUND DEAD IN CANAL." it read. Dennis stopped when he saw it and looked at it for awhile before going inside. He walked over to where the newspapers were kept and saw the pile of them with the same headline. He had to stop Sharon from seeing these, she didn't need this adding to the stress she was already under. He picked a copy up and went to the counter. Yolande looked at the paper on the counter,
"Not the sort of thing we thought would happen around here."
"No I suppose not but it might be totally accidental. Has no one thought that they could have just fallen into the canal?" Dennis couldn't help himself from biting back at Yolande. Inside he was petrified. He had only just got Sharon back and now all he could think about was losing her again. Not just her but his daughter aswell.

Dennis walked out of the shop and over to the bookies. Pat had already opened up and was serving Jim.
"Er Dennis the police were in here asking where you were earlier." Dennis couldn't believe that it was happening already.
"Do you know what for?"
"They didn't say, just said that they would be back later." Dennis walked through to the back into the office and sat in the chair with his head in his hands.

Part 23

Dennis sat still in his office chair for what felt like an eternity. He couldn't face the prospect of losing Sharon and their daughter. Dennis opened his top drawer and took out a picture of Sharon. He stared at it and his eyes slowly glazed over with tears. He never let Sharon see him like that, he had to be strong for her.
A knock on the office door quickly brough Dennis back to reality. He wiped his eyes with the back of his hand and said,
"Come in." In walked two men dressed in suits who walked to the front of his desk.
"Dennis Rickman?"
"Yes. How can I help?" Dennis tried his hardest to keep it together. He looked down at Sharon's picture and back up to the police officers.
"I'm Detective Sergeant Morris and this is Detective Birch from Walford CID. We've been monitoring this place for the last two weeks and we think one of your customers is someone we've been searching for for quite some time."
"Which customer?"
"Im sorry Sir but we can't release that information. We would like to ask your permission to use this office as a surveilance base for this operation." Dennis couldn't believe what he was hearing. He had thought this was it, that this was the end for him.
"Well i'm planning to take some time off for a few weeks from today anyway, my wifes pregnant with our first child so we're busy preparing for the arrival so the office will be free. You're more than welcome to use it."
"Thank you Mr Rickman. May I ask that you keep this quite, the least number of people who know about it the better."
"No problem, i'll let Pat, the manager, know that the office will be being used."
Dennis stood up and shook Detective Sergeant Morris's hand. They both walked out of the office followed by Dennis. Dennis watched them leave the bookies and turned to Pat.
"I'm not going to be around much for the next few weeks Pat, I want to spend some time with Sharon. Those two men and maybe a few others will be in and out here quite a bit using the office, its nothing to worry about, just so you know."
"No problem Dennis." Dennis walked out of the bookies and walked over to the Vic. He couldn't carry on like this, he needed to forget about it. Well, as much as he can. Something like this couldn't be easily forgotten about but if he wanted anything of a life with Sharon and their daughter he had to try.

Sharon was stood behind the bar when he entered. She looked up and smiled and he smiled back. He signalled for Sharon to go upstaris. He took her in his arms and held her close to him.

The next few months went by in a blur. They had decorated the nursery and were waiting for the arrival of the baby. The man in the canal had been identified. He had been missing from home for two weeks and had been found in the canal. The police said it was accidental death.
"My back is killing me today Dennis."
"Maybe you should stay up here and rest instead of going downstairs today."
"I might do that, just don't feel up to going down there today."
Dennis turned and but his empty cup in the sink in the kitchen. He turned and looked at Sharon who doubled over in pain.
"ARGGHHH." Dennis rushed to Sharon and took hold of her hand.
"I think its it Dennis. My waters have just broken."
