View Full Version : ee axed next year?

Struggling soap EastEnders has suffered another blow after landing its second lowest ratings.

The soap was trounced in the viewing ratings by ITV1's Emmerdale, which once had barely a fraction of the BBC1 soap's audience.

The news has sparked industry speculation that the BBC may axe the programme next year.

i think if it did another channel such as channel 5 would buy it like they bought home and away. it will be stupid if they axe it.
i wish another channel would of bought brookside thought i miss it.

I agree I loved Brookie!

I doubt this is true no insider would be allowed to say EastEnders could be axed at this stage. Of course it could so could any show.

NO WAY - Eastenders will go on forever - perhaps they should sack some scriptwriters never mind the cast, they can only work with what they are given !!

Treacle
03-03-2005, 15:49
Exactly yvonne I think it's unfair to blame the recent decline on the cast, they aren't the ones writing it.

I know it's totally irrevant BUT

I live on The Wirral (just across the Mersey from Liverpool for anyone who doesn't know where that is) and have just been shopping to Asda, the guy who played Mick Johnson was behind me at the checkout... I see him in there alot.

Useless info but I thought I'd tell a fellow Brookie fan

what is the point of axing it. the bbc's highest ratings come from this show how are they going to fill the gap with news or somthing. if it is axed i reckon we all should not pay tv liscense since the bbc is the only channel to require it, if ee is gone then theres no point of watching the bbc. oh and by the way i chose ee instead of emmerdale even though emmerdale is a lil better at the mo

EE is legend and as far as I'm concerned axing it would be the biggest mistake the Beeb could ever make. I can only think of about three things I watch on the BBC - the rest is ITV stuff. They can't do it!

yvonne_slater

Well said..

as I've said

Sack some script writers, get people in with new ideas and return the best soap on TV to it's rightful place No 1..

I love Eastenders

EE needs to bring back John Yorke! Or if they can't do that, they can get Sarah Phelps to write all the episodes. She's about the only decent scriptwriter left - she wrote all the major Shannis episodes.

Treacle
03-03-2005, 16:02
I don't care about having a tv set I wouldn't pay the BBC. I'd just watch ITV, or do they come and remove your tele?

Tony Jordan and Simon Ashdown are old time favourites too.

John Yorke is in charge of everything which isn't executive producer but still he's in control.

Sammi
03-03-2005, 16:05
Simon Ashdown... yes... didn't he write some of the Slater episodes? Yes, he's definitley worth bringing back. It's such a shame EE has been allowed to sink this low. However it's still the best Soap on TV and it's bound to override this rough patch.

I think a little man drives round in a van and knocks on the door asking to see your TV licence ! turn the colour onto black and white, you don't have to pay for that !! or alternatively don't answer the door

LOL

but seriously it's a £1000 fine if you don't pay and I think we're one of the only countries in the world who have to pay for a TV licence !!! charming hey.

(god I'm full of useless information today) ;o)

Simon Ashdown wrote the episode where Janine was arrested for Lauras murder. (Pictures of this episode can be found in the classic episodes section)

They wouldn't stand a cat in hells chance. If I didn't watch the BBC I wouldn't pay for it. I'd take them to court they haven't got a leg to stand on.

I don't understand why we have to pay for the license fee if you don't want to watch the BBC. If EE is axed then I definitley won't be paying the fee. It's ridiculous - some people don't even watch the BBC and they're forced to pay the fee even with threats of being taken to court. It's so stupid.

Treacle
03-03-2005, 16:11
Do you have to pay a fee in Spain?

Sammi
03-03-2005, 16:13
No, it's not applicable here but when I used to live in the UK it was so expensive. Actually it would be better if they made the BBC completley free and used advertising to fund it. Case closed! :D

Ad breaks in EastEnders would be so weird.

That's the problem. People aren't used to seeing the BBC with ads. It would be so wierd! Argh. Another ten years with that bleedin' license fee is enough to drive you bonkers. AND it's going up!

they can't put it up, its ruddy enough allready, i'm a student, i cant afford anymore out goings!!!! arrgh. they cant axe eastenders, there will be too many angry people. we pay the fee so we can have a choice in the programming. if its axed people wont pay because it wont reflect their customers interests and wishes

Treacle
03-03-2005, 16:27
If you don't pay you get fined I believe lol. I'll be switching off my box and saying no to tv permanently then.

Bad Wolf
03-03-2005, 16:30

Sammi
03-03-2005, 16:31
I'm a student too Rach and I know how hard it is to afford things. I hardly have the money to socialise let alone pay that license fee. I keep having to get my parents to bail me out. It's so unfair!

Treacle
03-03-2005, 16:33
I'd ask them to reduce the cost or I won't pay the fee in any way, shape or form.

its £121 for colour licence and £40.50 for black n white licence but when you go in a shop now to buy a tv they take your details and give them to tv licenceing, its up to £1000 fine i got caught once and had to pay £100

ITV boast about everything while the BBC are really modest - You don't see the EE cast blabbermouthing all over the place about their high ratings! The Emmerdale cast are really big-headed and annoying!! Aaaaaargh!!

EastEnders gets 11-12 million viewers.

Sammi
03-03-2005, 16:53

Bad Wolf
03-03-2005, 16:54
at the end of the day every channel should have a soap (or if your itv, er 2), eastenders has to stay, they should get rid of the gangsters and make it a bit more relate-able

Treacle
03-03-2005, 16:54
Dens return from the dead got 17 million!

Sammi
03-03-2005, 16:56
Do you see gangsters strutting around the East End? No way! It's so unrealistic and they've got to add a bit more realism in their storylines.

Jade
03-03-2005, 16:58
There is going to be a massive review of the BBC in 2006 and their going back to what they were originally intended for ie informative programmes not programmes for ratings.

Not sure if thats where this rumor came form

Treacle
03-03-2005, 16:59
I doubt it's going to be axed so maybe we should just see what happens.

Alisha
03-03-2005, 17:01
I doubt ee will get the axe.

Its the highest raeings show on the BBC and alot of the rateings are exagerated. I bet when the press refer to ee's bad patch they will use thier '6 million' remark to back themselves up but rateings have been mostly over 11million.

ee has had alot of good episodes lately, namely Den's dimese was gripping stuff. It may not be as good as it used to be but its still worth watching with much Drama. All soaps go through thier rough patches but ee have a really loyal fan base. Iv been watching it all my life and it still remains my favourate tv show and its the only soap I watch.

Exactly. All soaps have their ups and downs, and if the BBC were to cancel it there would be a huge out cry.

Eldorado deserved to be canned and Eastenders is noway as bad.

I don't think it was Emmerdale that purposely went against Eastenders. Emmerdale obviously would always have had a longer episode the day Charity left the show. I think it was obvious that EE decided to weld two episodes together to try and prove a point.....failing miserably.

Treacle
04-03-2005, 12:51
Not really failing because Emmerdale only got it's normal audience of a big night of Charity leaving - 9 million. Maybe even a bit less because they stretch to 10. They might have got more if EE wasn't on so on a big night they didn't care about what they potentially could get.

wilwood
04-03-2005, 15:48
the problem is its not about ratings. The BBC has a board of governors who have a mandate from the Government [Tessa Jowell's domain at the moment] and the Beeb have been blamed for not putting on more informative programming. when they think that we want to watch programs about the number of rats in New York [life of grime NY] is it any wonder!?!?!?!

hopefully the review in 2006 will see that leaving Eastenders on BBC1 is the best way to go as it actually encourages people to see what is on after it [apart from me as I am a Bill addict!]

so if you want to petition anyone about EE it needs to be Tessa Jowell/tony Blair or the Beebs board of governors!!
