Gail's Back!
This is love triangle you haven't been expecting! Paul's ex-wife, Gail, makes a shock return to Ramsay St after almost two decads. And it takes her no time to go head to head with Paul's current love, Bad girl Izzy!
As well, it soon becomes clear that Paul is still harbouring feelings for Gail. Who will he choose?
Fiona Corke, who is reprising the role of Gail, believes there's still much unresolved between Gail and Paul.
"The thing with Gail is that she's someone who doesn't declare her emotions easily," Fiona says. "She hides them away for fear of being hurt, like many people do, but it doesn't really serve her. It creates a vicious circle."
Long time Neighbours viewers may remember that when Gail left Ramsay St in 1989, it was in rather dramatic cicrumstances.
"Most things between Paul and Gail were dramatic," Fiona says with a laugh. "Gail's father has been killed in a car accident. Gail blamed Paul a little for his death and was furious with him when he left the funeral to go to a business meeting! That was just it for Gail, she couldn't take any more.
"At the time, she was about seven months pregnant with the triplets and she decided she wouldn't get the support form Paul that she obviously required, so she left and went to Tasmania."
Now, Gail returns to Erinsborough, she and Paul must face the terrible reality one of their sons is a crazed killer.
"Gail really comes back for her children. He children have been everything in her life. She did have a relationship with another man for a number of years in Tasmania. But really, Gail's life has been her children and her business - a plant nursery - and she writes for a gardening magazine.
"Now she is so overcome by what's happened to her kids. At first, she is angry with Paul. She has bought these three kids up on her own, with no help from him, and they have bene perfectly happy and healthy. Then as soon as they start staying with their Dad, everything goes wrong! Gail's really on her guard now."
When Gail expresses her disbelief at what her son has apparently done, Izzy sees red and accuses Gail of being in denial and being a bad mother.
Meanwhile, Paul confesses to neighbour Lyn that he may still be in love with Gail.
Stefan reveals, "All there's ever been since Gail left is this unmasked animostity between Paul and her. He says 'the only time they ever talk is about schools or maintenance fees.'
"But deep down, I think Paul and Gail love each other very deeply. They've just refused to acknowledge that because there's so much water under the bridge, so much animosity and alienation over so many years.
"But there's certainly something still there."
