As an exhausted Steph slips in and out of sleep, a worried Lyn and Susan maintain a bedside vigil. His issues come to a head during anatomy class and he discovers a kindred spirit in fellow-student Sasha, who encourages Boyd to unburden his woes. Following Steph’s change of heart, Karl prepares her for an emergency Caesarean, convinced she’s too weak to survive the duress of an induced labour. Although Steph would prefer to give birth naturally, she agrees to the operation. But she’s devastated that Max won’t be by her side during the birth of their son.

Boyd makes a desperate dash to the airport and does his best to get Max and Summer to the hospital in time. A series of unfortunate delays push Max to breaking point and Boyd bears the brunt of his anxiety. Wracked with guilt, Boyd blames himself for keeping the full extent of Steph’s condition from Max.

Meanwhile, fate intervenes in the form of Drew Kirk’s baby blanket and Steph’s waters break. Convinced it’s a sign, Steph begs Karl to let her give birth naturally – she knows she can do it. Her failing strength receives a much-needed boost when Max, Summer and Boyd finally arrive. All is forgiven as Max and Steph reaffirm their love. Karl and Susan are reminded of the birth of their own children and the powerful bond of their shared history.

With Max by her side, Steph draws on every ounce of strength she has during the long night of labour. Max is humbled by her courage and stamina. In the early hours of the morning, Steph and Max are blessed with the greatest gift of all – the birth of their healthy baby boy, Charlie Hoyland.
