Paul McCartney is to make the first ever live music broadcast into space.

When he plays the Beatles classic Good Day Sunshine at a gig in Anaheim, California on November 13, it will be beamed directly to the international space station.

The song will be used as a morning alarm to the two men on the station, who are currently in orbit 220 miles above earth.

McCartney decided to make the broadcast when he heard NASA had used a Beatles song to welcome Space Shuttle Discovery back to earth.

"I was extremely proud to find out that one of my songs was played for the crew of Discovery this summer," he said. "In our concert we hope to repay the favour."
