The fictional village of Emmerdale (formerly Beckindale) is situated on the banks of the River Emm in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Population approx. 300.

Emmerdale belongs to the district council area of Hotten – once presided over by Mayor Eric Pollard. Emmerdale uses a Hotten Post Code and address line of West Yorkshire. Until recently, Emmerdale’s Westminster representitive was none other than Gloria Pollard M.P.

More minor issues and day to day amenities in the village are dealt with by the Parish Council. The members are unknown but Alan Turner has surely been a candidate in the past. This council is not to be confused with the Parochial Church Council (PCC), which deals with matters only regarding St Marys Church and congregation. This is Edna’s domain!

Emmerdale is 52 miles from Leeds, 39 miles from Bradford, 15 miles from Skipdale, 8 miles from Hotten. Connelton lies a tad over 3 miles to the West of Emmerdale and Robblesfield is a smidge over 3 miles to the East.

Until the plane crash of December 1993, the tiny hamlet of Demdyke was situated some 400 yards outside of the Emmerdale – between the village and the farm. The properties there were flattened in the disaster and the surviving former residents now live in the main village
