Ashley apologises for ever doubting Laurel but she is still hurt that he distrusted her. The Bishop tells them that in the light of Ethan’s confession, he gives his permission for them to marry. Ashley gets down on one knee and proposes but, after all that has happened, will Laurel accept?

Over at Home Farm, the Dingles go fishing and Shadrach is positive that he has seen something big and shiny lurking in the depths of the lake. Zak wishfully thinks that they might have struck gold.

Sam is consumed with fear that Alice may have cancer. Unable to cope with the weight of keeping Alice’s secret from his father, the young couple decide to tell the family their terrifying news. The Dingles are shocked to the core but vow to support Alice as she faces the results of her test the following day.

Elsewhere, Laurel and Ashley announce that they are getting married and Nicola excitedly starts asking Laurel about her wedding plans. Spurred on by Nicola, Laurel tells Ashley her ideas for a lavish affair, but he insists that he had anticipated something more tranquil. Will they be able to come to a compromise for their special day?

Meanwhile, Victoria complains that with Jack and Diane away she has nobody to take her to karate lessons. Louise reluctantly agrees, but wishes that Victoria had more girly interests

Tuesday 25/10/05

The Dingle clan wait with baited breathe at the oncology clinic as Alice collects her cancer test results. Zak tries to console Sam as he fears the worst, but Alice finally emerges and gladly announces that she has been given the all clear.

Meanwhile, Adam and Isla finalise their divorce and after signing the papers Adam warmly assists his ex-wife to her car. Steph is clearly jealous but puts on a brave face when he returns and asks when Isla and he are moving back in together. Adam corrects her false assumption, putting a smile back on Steph’s face and making Adam privately pleased by the effect he has on her.

Over at Victoria’s karate class, Louise is forced to participate and is partnered up with Kayleigh’s father, Martin. The young girls spot the chemistry between Martin and Louise and vow to get them together. Could romance be on the cards for unlucky-in-love Louise?

Wednesday 26/10/05

Adam and Steph go for a meal in the Woolpack and when Betty joins them, Adam politely states that he and Steph are enjoying a date. Steph is taken aback and when they later retire to the B&B she is shocked when Adam kisses her neck. Steph warns him off with a knife, leaving Adam terrified and Steph devastated by her own rage. Has she ruined her chances with the doctor forever?

Over at the Dingles', Debbie is upset that her family have forgotten her sixteenth birthday. When Lisa finally remembers, she organises a party, but Debbie is unimpressed by her efforts and complains that Sarah always takes the limelight from her.

Thurdsday 27/10/05

Adam tries to talk to Steph about the previous night but her embarrassment causes her to be dismissive and he is left frustrated by her barriers. After several attempts to get to the bottom of Steph’s behaviour, he respects her wishes when she asks him to leave her alone. Adam’s reluctance to fight is proof in Steph’s mind that he can’t really be interested in her.

Over at the Post Office, Daz dares Kayleigh and Victoria to steal something. Viv catches them red-handed and phones Martin and Louise. When Martin arrives he manages to persuade Viv not to press charges and then accuses Louise of being irresponsible. As the argument gets heated, the sexual tension rises. Will the situation push the pair together or force them further apart?

Meanwhile, Val encourages Del to make a move on Carl in the hope that it will get them a contract with Home Farm. Sensitive to Carl’s grief over Max, Del refrains from mentioning curtains and chooses to be his friend. However, Val later drops her in it by telling Carl that Del has a hidden agenda. Del tries to defend herself but Carl is left fuming.

Adam tells an astonished Steph that he’ll be checking out today as he feels their friendship and chance of romance has been jeopardised. Covering her true feelings, Steph agrees it’s the right decision for him to leave. How will Adam respond to her sudden confession?

Elsewhere, Betty is thrilled when Kathy leaves her a message saying that she and Seth and returning to Emmerdale to celebrate his birthday. Betty spreads the good news and the villagers anticipate Seth’s arrival.

Meanwhile, Del tries to convince Carl that she has true feelings for him, but he states that, in light of what has happened, she has definitely blown her chances. Can disappointed Del change his mind?

‘He decides to confess, very publicly.’ Ethan finally comes clean to the Bishop and decides it’s time to leave Emmerdale, says actor Liam O’Brien.

Does Laurel blame Ethan for what has happened between her and Ashley?
Yes. Undoubtedly it’s his dishonesty that has led to their break up.

When Ethan stands up in front of the congregation what does he tell them?
After some serious soul searching he realises that he will never have Laurel – so all the lies, the hurt and blame is for nothing.

He decides to confess, very publicly and admit that his feelings for Laurel, as genuine as they are, did not excuse his behaviour.

Does he admit to causing the problems?
He admits his liability, his dishonesty and his tempered whispers to the Bishop. He had genuine feelings for Laurel, but his handling of them was inappropriate and cruel.

Does the Bishop believe what Ethan has told him?
Momentarily he speculates that Ethan is trying to save Ashley and Laurel’s marriage. But in no certain terms Ethan makes the Bishop realise that is the truth he’s spoken.

Does Ethan admit to betraying Ashley?
He does. He feels like Judas. Ashley stood by him through all his troubles with Debbie, and he repaid him with lies and self-centred deceit.

Does Ethan feel he has no choice but to leave Emmerdale?
He knows that he loves Laurel and for the time being that’s not going to change. He needs distance from her and the village.

He needs space and time, to figure out if he’s meant for this religious life or not.

He has a lot of soul searching to do, and feels for now it can’t be in Emmerdale.
