Hi this is the follow up to Keeping the Faith and Keeping it in the family but can stand alone so it doesnt matter too much if you have'nt read them. Just a short part, a brief description, to start off here we go:


Part 1


It had been five years since the inciddent with Dave and a lot had happened. The children had grown and Faith and Alyss had flourished into complete minitures of their parents.
It was breakfast time in the Rickman household and it was as busy and chaotic as ever. At one end of the large breakfast table sat Dennis, his head buried in a newspaper as he absently tried to listen to what his wife was trying to tell him.
At the opposite end sat the eldest of the Rickman children. Faith Angela Rickman was 10 and the mirror image of her mother, she even shared her mothers hazel eyes, shining from beneath a curtain of lucious blonde ringlets.
Next to her sat Alyss Amara Rickman. She was 9 and rarely left her sisters side. Her mousy brown hair hanging straight down her back made her the the child in the family that looked most like her father, her bright green eyes glittered attently as she listened, enthralled to what Faith had to say.
Seated next to his dad and currently whining about the lack of coco pops was Ryan Peter Rickman. The bubbly four year old was the apple of everyones eye. With similar looks to Faith he shared her mop of blonde of curls and pale complection, he too however had his fathers bottle green eyes.
Ryans birth had made the family complete, with two girls and a boy what more could two parents such as Sharon and Dennis ask for. The family had settled down into a normal life and sharon and dennis had begun to enjoy their children. What could possibly change that?
Lilly and Toby, thats what.
Next to Sharon, defiantly resisting his breakfast was Toby Mark Rickman. He struggled in his baby blue highchair and was remarkably strong for a one year old. His brown eyes and hair made him cute in a way no one quiete understood..
On Sharons other side in a matching pink highchair sat Toby's twin, Lilly Madison Rickman. The little girl gurgled and laughed at her mothers current situation. The happy baby was hardly recognisable and often confused with her twin brother. She too had hazel eyes and tufts of auburn hair sat in neatly arranged pigtails that sharon had done not five minutes before.
Yes the twins had definatly been a surprise and having five children within the space of ten years had been a difficult ajustment for sharon and dennis but the twins had been born into a loving family, a family where the children were happy and the parents were content. A caring family, a joyful family...a perfect family?

Part 2

All: Happy birthday dear Ryan, Happy birthday to you.

Singing rang out from the living room of the rickmans house as sharon and dennis marked their sons fourth birthday. It was 8:30am and as usual the family was in disarray in the early motning rush.
Dennis kissed each of his children in turn before turning to his wife.

Dennis: Sorry but I...
Sharon: I know, work. Just dont be late home or you'll miss the party.
Dennis: Dont worry I'll be here, I'm not gonna miss his party.
Sharon: Ok bye love.
Dennis: Bye

And with that dennis was off to work leaving sharon to cope with the kids.

Alyss: Mum come on we're going to be late for school.
Sharon: You wont be late
Faith: Yeah just like we weren't late nearly all of last week.
Sharon: Faith just behave ok you're not helping.
Faith: And you were late picking us up
Sharon: Faith I'm sorry ok I was just a little tied up sorting you're brothers party out, now come on get in the car or we will be late, you too Alyss.

Faith dropped the arguament momentaraly only to resume it once sharon had managed to get all five children safely into the car.

Faith: I dont see why he's even having a party.
Sharon: Because its his birthday how would you feel if no one remembered you're birthday.
Faith: Well its not as if he's going to remember it, is he.
Alyss: She has a point mum
Sharon: Alyss, please...
Faith: I'm just saying that...
Sharon: Faith just drop it ok because unless you do, you'll be in you're room while this party is happening.
Faith: Fine why would I wanna hang out with a bunch of babies anyway

Sharon gave an exasperated sigh before stopping the car outside the local nursery school and leading a smiling Ryan inside. Faith just frowned and looked at Alyss.

Faith: Come on Ally you know I'm right.
Alyss: Hey dont drag me into this.
Faith: Its alright for you you're the polite one eveyone likes you.
Alyss: Yeah and you're the eldest, the prettiest, the smartest and dads favourite so shut up.
Faith: I am not dads favourite, at least not anymore, not since Ryan and the twins were born he likes them better.
Alyss: Dont be silly Faith at least you were his favourite once, I've never been anyones favourite. Dad likes you and Ryan and mum spends all her time cooing over Toby and Lilly.

Faith looked across to her sister and registered the sad look on her face and the tears sparkling in her eyes.

Faith: Sorry Alyss, you're right but I'll tell you something you're my favourite.
Alyss: Really?
Faith: Really, I like you more that Ryan, Toby and Lilly all put together. Now stop being a sissy and wipe you're eyes before mum see's

Alyss looked at her sister and gave her a small hug as sharon got into the car

Sharon: Right lets get you two to school shall we before we have anymore arguaments.

Faith and Alyss looked at each other and rolled their eyes. It was going to be a long day

Hi again here we go. It actually really hard to get this script going even though I know the rest will pretty much write itself lol I cant wait till I get past the beginning cos I know whats going to happen and I really enjoyed writing it even I found it exciting LOL anyway back to the boring beginning and : Are things starting to look a bit rocky for Dennis and his perfect family?

Part 3


Faith and Alyss were stood impatiently outside their school as they waited to be picked up. It was 3:25 a whole 15 minutes after school had finished. Faith kicked a stone across the floor and leaned on the gate behind her.

Faith: She's late...again.
Alyss: She'll be here
Faith: You wanna bet?

At that moment a dark blue car pulled up infront of the pair and the window was wound down.

It was Jake, he looked flustered and his son James, who was 7, two years younger than Alyss, and his sister Hannah who was five, were sat in the back seat.

Alyss: Uncle Jake, what are you doing here? Where's mum, or dad for that matter?

The two sisters had always known perfectly well that Chrissie and Jake weren't really their aunt and uncle but they were family and thats all that really mattered.

Jake: Your mum was busy with your brothers and sisters, she had some last minute preparations for the party.
Faith: And dad?
Jake: He's working
Alyss: Oh

Faith and Alyss looked at each other and Faith shrugged in a way that told her sister that she had probably expected this outcome all along. Alyss sighed and climbed into the back seat shuffling up until she was sat next next to James. Faith threw her school bag into the footwell and sat in the front and together the five of them drove towards the party.

Faith: So why isnt dad here?
Jake: I told you he's working
Faith: But he was supposed to be finishing early for the party
Jake: Well I dont know do I maybe he got held up, now come on smile everybody we're here and its a party isnt it.

But as Faith walked into a home she hardly recognised she didnt feel much like celebrating. On the contrary she felt sick. She ahd this horrible sinking feeling in her stomach thta just made her feel as if something was about to go wrong. She'd had it before and she was usually right.
The house was filled with a bunch of overactive toddlers all running around screaming at the top of their voice, their parents stood gossipping nearby just glad of the break. Everyone was happy and birthday spirits were in the air but that sinking feeling had settled in Faiths stomach and she refused to be happy. She turned to her sister for comfort, but Alyss had already run off to talk to her friend Natasha whose little brother was in Ryans class. Faith felt a pang of abandenment towards her sister and scowled.

?: Nows whats such an ugly look doing on such a pretty face?

It was pauline.

Faith: Oh hi
Pauline: Why so glum sweetheart?
Faith: No reason I'm just a little bored thats all.
Pauline: Well why dont you go and play with Aleesha, you're in the same class at school aren't you, you should be the perfect little friends.

It was true, Faith and Aleesha were in the same class at school but Faith Rickman and Aleesha Miller were anything but friends infact Faith possotively despised her.

Faith: No its ok I think I might go find mum
Pauline: Ok love

Faith quickly siezed her chance and snook away from pauline. She pushed her way through the crowds until she finally found her mum in the kitchen.
Sharon looked a little worried and was on the phone whilst frantically biting her nails.

Faith: Mum?...are you ok?

Sharon pulled off a near convincing smile

Sharon: I'm fine
Faith: Its dad isnt it

Sharon seemed surprised by her daughters bluntness but replied anyway.

Sharon: He's not answering his phone and he promised he'd be here.
Faith: Oh

She didnt know what else to say. Sharon plastered on a smile and beamed at her daughter.

Sharon: Oh well never mind its his loss, I'm sure we can have plenty of fun without him and besides I'm sure he'll be here soon he's probably just running a little late. Now come on angel its time to cut the cake.

Sharon left the kitchen leaving a slightly confused Faith with no option but to follow.

Part 4

Dennis sighed and swirled his brandy around the edge of the glass.He looked at the clock on the wall of his office. 8:15. He should have been home nearly 5 and a half hours ago. He was hiding...again.
Since the twins had been born he had found himself hiding out alot in his office and deep down he knew why. With Faith, Alyss and Ryan sharon had never really take to motherhood that well, she loved her children but often worried that she was doing everything wrong. The twins were different. Sharon was brilliant with them and dennis was left feeling redundant. She didnt need him, it felt as though the whole family didnt need him and now he was the one who couldnt cope.
Guilt surged through his veins. He was being stupid and he knew it. He was being selfish too. Right now he should be at his sons party, supporting his wife nad being there for his children. What was he doing instead? Drowning in his own self pity. Dennis downed the brandy and picked up his coat. It was time to face the music.

Sharon smiled as she tucked Ryan in and kissed him on the forhead. Now he and the twins were asleep it was just her, Faith and Alyss. Still no dennis.
Sharon heard the front door click and raced down to see who it was.
Ahhh Dennis. She shot him a murderous look and walked into the living room where Faith and Alyss sat playing snap on the carpet.

Sharon: Faith, Alyss, come on bed time
Faith: But mum...
Alyss: Just one more game?
Sharon: No I said bed no goodnight kids love ya

The girls watched as dennis walked in behind her and Alyss noticed the glimmer of hope flicker in her elder sisters eyes. She went for it.

Faith: Do we have to dad?

Faith knew crossing her mum was a risky move but it could just be worth it, although not this time.

Dennis: No come on you heard you're mum bed, you've got school in the morning

Together the two girls sulked silently out of the room and up to bed, sharon sat down on the sofa and looked up at dennis.

Sharon: So?
Dennis: So what?

Sharon jumped to he feet again

Sharon: So what? What do you mean so what? You ignore my calls for five hours and then say so what? Where the hell have you been?
Dennis: When did you stop being my wife and start being my keeper?
Sharon: The day you stopped caring about you're family.
Dennis: Well you seem to have coped just fine without me
Sharon: What are you on about?
Dennis: Nothing it doesnt matter. Look Im sorry ok I should have called.

He touched her hand and sharon softened.

Sharon: Yeah well its just you promised Ryan. He wanted his dad at his birthday party. This isnt the first fight we've had just lately dennis and the kids are starting to pick up on it.
Dennis: Let me guess Faith
Sharon: She wouldnt shut up about you all day and this afternoon she knew something was wrong. How did you know?
Dennis: It would be her wouldnt it she has you're brain she's good at working things out

Sharon smiled, Dennis smiled back.

Dennis: So are we ok?
Sharon: We're ok. Just please dont let it happen again at leats call me.
Dennis: It wont happen again, I promise

Sharon glanced at him with a sad look in her eyes as deja vous hit the pair.



***Dennis: Your not gonna lose me, i promise
Sharon: you said that before remember and you broke my heart.***


The pair blinking and sharon let the small smile she had been holding slide off her lips. He hadnt broken that promise at least. Or at least he hadnt yet.

Part 5



Sharon paced up and down as Faith and Alyss watched nervously from their position behind the banister.

Faith: She's been doing that for over an hour now.
Alyss: Come on Fay there's nothing we can do lets go to bed.
Faith: Ok

The two girls traipsed off to bed and sharon continued to pace.
It was 9:30 and the day after Ryans party, he and the twins were already in bed and yet again Dennis hadnt come home. That morning things had been tense between sharon and dennis and he had left for work earlier than usual.
Sharon was starting to worry.

Across the square Dennis wasn’t thinking about his family, no he was thinking about anything but them. He was in scarlets yet again drowning his sorrows in an endless waterfall of Vodca when a leggy young blonde had come up to him and occupied the bar stool next to him.

:Hi I'm Brandy.
Dennis: I'm Dennis. Brandy ay, thats my kind of name

Sharon couldnt wait anymore. It was late and Dennis wasnt home. She grabbed her keys and shouted up the stairs.

Sharon: Faith, Alyss...

The two girls ran down the stairs eagerly.

Sharon: I'm going out ok, now I've phoned auntie Chrissie and she'll be here soon but until then I dont want you to answer the door to anyone do you understand.
Alyss: Yes mum
Faith: Course we do but where...
Sharon: It doesnt matter I'll be home soon. Be good, Faith you're in charge.

Sharon put on her coat, walked out of the door and locked it behind her making a determined path towards the bookies.

Dennis took another gulp of his drink it was funny the more he drank the better he felt. The drinking made him feel good, being out for a change made him feel good and being with Brandy felt very good indead.

Brandy: Why dont we go somewhere a little quieter...

Dennis wasnt stupid he knew exactly what she meant and as ashamed as he might have been to admit it, sharon didnt even cross his mind.

Dennis: Yeah I know a place, come on

He took her hand and led her out of the club

Sharon hesitated as she walked towards the bookies. This was stupid he was probably just working late. He'd have a good excuse, she should just go home. Sharon was beginning to doubt her motives and she hated not being sure of herself.
Besides it was cold outside and she had already called Chrissie to babysit.
Inside the lights were on, so why was the door locked?
Sharon pushed aside her self doubt and slid her key into the lock. She opened the door and stepped inside, the warm air a welcome reprive from the harsh winds outside.

Sharon: Dennis?

She barely dared more than a whisper. She could hear noises, laughing and giggling. Sharon suddenly felt sick and wished she had stayed at home but it was too late now she had to know.
Sharon took a deep breath and walked into the office. What she saw made a hand spring to her face in mild surprise and she let out a small squeek.
Dennis and a girl sharon had never even seen before were both obviouslt drunk were cavorting on the carpet without a care in the world.
Dennis hadnt even properly registered Sharons presence until he heard the office door slam behind her.
Now what was he going to do?

Part 6



Sharon didnt go straight home, she couldnt. How could she go home and face her children, their children? How could she sleep in her bed, their bed? How could she even be happy again knowing what she knew, that dennis didnt love her anymore.
That was the only conclusion she could reach as she sat on a cold park bench in the middle of the night for well over an hour. He ddint love her anymore, he couldnt. But it was time to face facts and sharon had to go home eventually.
She walked slowly home and paused at the steps of the house. She took a deep breathe and walked in, knowing perfectly well that the next few minutes would affect the rest of her life.
Dennis was already waiting for her. He was sat on the sofa, his shirt untucked, his hair ruffled. Sharon felt sick at the sight of him but at least the kids were in bed.

Sharon: When did Chrissie leave?

A normal question, she could handle a normal question.

Dennis: I...I said she could go when I got back she has Jake, James and Hannah to think about.
Sharon: Yeah she has, she cares a great deal about her family.
Dennis: Look Sharon ...

That was the end of the normal questions then sharon though glumly.

Dennis: Look Sharon I can...
Sharon: Dont you dare say explain because nothing you can say can make this better

Dennis stood up an reached out to her but she pulled away and kept her distance.

Dennis: I know it was wrong but...
Sharon: What's her name?
Dennis: I...err...what?
Sharon: What's her name?
Dennis: I dont know she was just some random person
Sharon: You're lying
Dennis: OK fine her names Brandy feel better now?
Sharon: Brandy huh well that figures.

Sharon poured a glass of wine from the cabinet in the corner and took a long sip.

Dennis: She doesnt mean anything to me.
Sharon: Really? Cos she means everything to me. Tonight you chose her over me, you chose her over you're family and whether you've known her 10 minutes or 10 years makes no difference because tonight she helped destroy my marriage.
Dennis: What? NO sharon I can change.
Sharon: Its too late for that Dennis. It isnt even just tonight. Tonight just helped me see things more clearly
Dennis: Sharon...
Sharon: Things haven't been right for a long time and you know that as well as I do.
Dennis: What are you saying.
Sharon: All things must come to an end Dennis, maybe we have.
Dennis: You're serious aren't you
Sharon: Dennis we always said we would be ok as long as we could see a future together...well I cant see that future anymore.
Dennis: You mean...
Sharon: I need you to leave, its over Dennis.
Dennis: And the kids?
Sharon: You'll still see them, this isnt their fault
Dennis: But after all we've had
Sharon: Exactly, "all we've had" its in the past dennis and as the saying goes: The past is gone, the futures not here yet so all we really have is the now and right now I need you to leave. I cant be with you anymore because you make me doubt myself and I cant be sure that you love me...or that I love you for that matter.

Dennis finally understood that she was right. It was over and if her thought about it he no longer knew what the future held either when it had always been so clear before. It was time to go because she was right. He couldnt be sure he loved her anymore because if he did he wouldnt have even known who Brandy was.

Dennis: I need to get some stuff...

Sharon nodded and as dennis left to pack his bags she burst into tears. She sniffed and wiped her eyes hoping that as she held the door open for him he wouldnt notice. He didnt and a simple goodbye later and everything had changed. All of a sudden eleven years of marriage meant nothing and he was no longer a part of her immediate life. He was an outsider, a weekend dad and eventually he would be just another ex-husband for sharon to add to her list. She suddenly felt so alone. A single mother with no fixed income and five hungry mouths to feed, she had no idea how she was going to cope. She couldnt do this, it wasnt supposed to be this way. Sharon sank down the wall and sobbed herself to sleep right there in the hallway.

Upstairs a distraught Faith rocked herself to sleep and pulled her covers around herself to muffle her own tears. Her dad was gone and her whole world was crumbling around her. It was the sound of her own mothers sobs that accompanied her own plus her complete exhaustion that finally soothed Faith to sleep but for everyday since she would clearly remember falling to sleep with that familiar feeling of dread deep in the depths of her stomach and lodged tighter that ever.

Part 7


The next few days went by in a whirl. Sharon was grateful that the kids hadnt asked where dennis was, she just couldnt bring herself to tell them. She had of course realised that Faith and Alyss must know. In actual fact Faith had heard the whole thing from her bedroom and had quickly filled Alyss in on the details the next morning. Both girls had sworn not to mention it to their mother or their father.
Sharon and Dennis hadnt seen each other for nearly a week but Sharon was aware that he was staying in a b&b not far from their home and knew it was only a matter of time before she would have to face him. So Sharon carried on her life as best she could, struggling with five children but finding welcome support from her two eldest daughters who never once complained.
Of course Pauline and Chrissie quickly got wind of Dennis's dissapearence and tried to make Sharon feel better by belittling him and putting him down but that wasnt what Sharon wanted. Dennis was a good man, she knew that, and he had given her five beautiful children, part of her still loved him, part of her would always love him. But it was over and she knew that one way or another they both had to move on.
When Dennis finally did contact her conversation was difficult and laboured. They tended not to dwell on pleasanteries and rather got straight to the point with matters like the childrens guardianship. It was an unspoken establishment that they children would stay with sharon but that dennis would see them as often as he liked. This arrangement seemed to suite everyone but the children.
Most of the time it was fine but every now and again Ryan would speak out on his loyalties to his father an example being at breakfast times.

Sharon: Come on Ryan be a good boy and eat it all up.
Ryan: NO...
Sharon: Ryan...
Ryan: It stinks I hate it and I hate you I want Daddy!

Such conversations often left Sharon visably close to tears.
On other occasions the children would be encouraged to spy on one parent for the other. This was something that Faith and Alyss simply refused to do. It was wrong and they knew it.
All in all Sharon and Dennis tried to see as little of each other as was possible, it was easier that way. but the pair still couldnt just forget about each other and Sharon had pent many night wishing dennis was laid next to her only to wake in the morning and despise her feelings for betraying her. It then came as a great surprise and utter shock to sharon when one morning, about a month after Dennis had departed, Faith revealed some very interesting news.

Faith looked into the mirror and grinned, her mum sure wasnt going to be expecting this. Sharon was going to freak. She had gotten up early and sat for nearly two hours agonisingly straightening her beautiful naturally curly hair then had proceeded to arrange it into feather like plumes on top of her head. She had opted out of her normal gingham school dress and put on a knee length skirt and short sleeved blouse. The final touch was a thick application of candy pink lip gloss she had aquired from...
There was a knock at her door it was Sharon. Faith grinned again and turned away from the mirror and towards the door her mother was now entering through.
For a moment it was as though Sharon didnt realise the change in her daughters appearance.

Sharon: Come on Fay we're going to be late, you still have to...OH MY GOD...

Part 8


That wasnt exactly the reaction she had hoped for but Faith surficed it would do

Sharon: Why aren't you wearing your school dress?
Faith: I..
Sharon: Are you wearing lip gloss?
Faith: Yes do you..
Sharon: Oh my...what the hell have you done to your beautiful hair.
Faith: Do you like it?

Faith did a little twirl apparantly proud of her new look. Alyss walked past her door and did a double take.

Alyss: Wuhho, Fay is that you, I hardly recognised you you look that rediculus.
Faith: Clear off Alyss or you'll get this.

Faith made a gesture with her fist and Sharon woke from her stupor and ushered Alyss out of the door.

Sharon: Faith what have you done
Faith: Its just a bit of lipgloss and a different set of clothes.
Sharon: No its bright pink lipgloss and its the wrong clothes for school.
Faith: Who sez?
Sharon: I do
Faith: Well I dont
Sharon: What about your haith Faith, all your lovely ringlets
Faith: They weren't lovely and anyway its not like they're gone forever...unfortunatly
Sharon: I dont get it why would you want to change your hair like this
Faith: Because the ringlets were silly and babyish
Sharon: Says who?

Faith showed slight recognition at her words being used against her but steamed ahead anyway

Faith: Everyone does. No one has ringlets anymore and they haven't since like the stone age or something.
Sharon: Faith just calm down you're hair made you unique, it made you you, this isnt you.
Faith: Just shut up mum and stop being so stupid.

Sharon was taken aback by her daughters rudeness but Faith was still shouting.

Faith: I'm sick of being treat like a child, you treat me the same as the others and I'm the eldest. I'm nearly eleven for Gods sake
Sharon: I treat you like a child because at eleven you still are one and the way you're acting at the moment the twins are better behaved.
Faith: Stop being so horrible mum. You're always horrible to me and I hate you


Sharon rolled her eyes slightly at the silliness of Faiths behavior

Sharon: Faith stop being so silly
Faith: I'm not being silly you are.
Sharon: I'm not now just calm down.
Faith: I hate you and Alyss and Ryan and the stupid twins too. I hate you all and I want to live with dad. He wouldnt mind if I changed my hair and Brany would help she's not like you she...

Something snagged in sharons mind as tears filled her daughters eyes as she screamed at Sharon.

Sharon: Hey hey wait a minute. Brandy?
Faith: Yeah dads girlfriend she lives with him. She's way nicer that you and she's cool too.

Sharons mind was reeling an she could feel herself losing the batle with faith so she opted for the easy way out.

Sharon: Right either you calm down now or there's no pocket money and you're grounded.
Faith: Fine I dont care you cant keep me here for ever.
Sharon: Fine have it you're way. You can stay in your room all day and I'm taking Alyss to school so I'll lock you in shall I?
Faith: Fine whatever.

Faith tried to sound not bothered but her voice was cracking. Too late

Sharon: Ok see you later. You can come out when you've calmed down, changed you're clothes and hopefully learnt some manners.

Sharon exited the room quickly and heard Faith shoe collide with the door when she had shut it as the little girl took out her anger on her nearest possesion.
For the rest of the day as Faith gently simmerd in her room Sharon could think of only one thing : Brandy
The person who had helped to destroy he their marriage was now Dennis's live in lover and to Sharons further dissmay seemed to be acting as a stepmother to Sharons children.

Dennis was straled awak by the sound of the telephone and moved that quick he nearly fell out of bed. He looked at the clock it was 10:05. The girl that lay next to him groaned and rolled over

Brandy: Aww Dennie for gods sake shut it up.

Dennis sighed and shook his head. He answered the phone but quickly wished he hadnt. It was sharon.

Sharon: Dennis?
Dennis: Err yes, sharon is that you?


The next thing dennis knew he was being subjected to motherly love in the form of high pitched squeels and shouting.

Sharon: IT HAS JUST TAKEN ME NEARLY AND HOUR AND A HALF TO GET FAITH TO SCHOOL AND DO YOU KNOW WHY?

Dennis didnt but he had a pretty good feeling she was going to tell him.

Sharon: BECAUSE YOU'RE BIMBO OF A GIRLFRIEND DECIDED TO GIVE OUR DAUGHTER FASHION TIPS.
Dennis: What?

Dennis blinked and rubbed the sleep from his eyes, it was too early for this.

Sharon: BRITNEY OR BRIONY OR WHATEVER HER NAME IS...
Dennis: Brandy
Sharon: WHATEVER. tHE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THIS MORNING I FOUND FAITH TRYING TO GO TO SCHOOL WITH THE WRONG UNIFORM AND MAKEUP ON. MAKEUP DENNIS!!! THATS OUR BABY AND YOUR GIRLFRIEND TOLD HER THAT SHE WASNT COOL IF SHE DIDNT WEAR MAKEUP.
Dennis: Well err
Sharon: YOU WANNA KNOW WHAT ELSE HAPPENED...
Dennis:errr

Again dennis found his choice in the matter rather limited but luckily for him sharon had calmed down a little.

Sharon: Faith cut her hair Dennis and she's combed out her curls
Dennis: She what...
Sharon: I know, luckily she only took an inch off the bottom and her curls will be back in the morning but you should have heard her dennis it was terrible it was like she wasnt my daughter anymore. She was screaming at me and calling me a bad mother. Thats when she told me about Brandy. You should have told me Dennis. I mean I know its not up to me who you date but it is up to me when that person is obviously having a bad effect on our children.

Dennis paused sharon was right, that certainly wasnt something the Faith he knew would do. She used to be so proud of her hair.

Dennis: Ok I'll talk to her
Sharon: Really?
Dennis: Well dont sound so surprised
Sharon: Sorry its just I didnt think you'd actually take me serious
Dennis: Look sharon we might not be together anymore but we had ten good years together, dont go thinking that meant nothing to me because they were some of the best years of my life and even though its over we still ahve the kids to think of and in that department your imput is very important to me.

Sharon paused not really knowing how to continue the now awkward conversation. Luckily for her she didnt have to as at that moment baby Lily gave a cry for attention

Sharon: Look Dennis I have to go ok lillys crying but I'll see you tomorrow when you come to see the kids
Dennis: Ok see you then
Sharon: Ok its a date

Ooops, Too late it had slipped out and sharon hastily put the phone down. She hadnt meant to say that. Its not like it meant anything though. I mean he had a girlfriend and she'd kicked him out. It was over. They were divorced all barring the paperwork, so why did sharon ahve a tingling sensation in her stomach and why was she smiling?

Part 10


It was the next day and any minute now dennis would be arriving to take Faith and Alyss to stay the night at his place. He had offered to take Ryan and the twins too but sharon knew he wouldnt last a minute with all five of the children so a seperate visit had been arranged for them.
All of the previous night and all morning sharon had been agonising over those final damning words that she had spoken to him the day before and she realised that she would never feel the same again. After she had addmitted to herself that she still loved him she had done nothing but cry. He was gone, she had forced him away and for her own good too but her heart still ached and there was a tight knot in the pit of her stomach that sharon knew would never really go away. But the pain will dim she told herself, it has too because people do this all the time. They break up, they cry. then they pick themselves up and start again.
The doorbell went and sharon answered it, at once greeted with that charming smile of his that she had always adored.

Dennis: Hi

She let him in and made her best effort to sound happy

Sharon: Hi. You ok?
Dennis: Fine. You?
Sharon: Oh you know fine

*Silence*

But sharon didnt really mind the silence. It gave her time to memorise the smooth line of his jaw and the way his hair curled slightly at the base of his neck. She took in the dozens of colours in the eyesthat would be insulted to be called simply green. She saw the green and the aqua blue, she even noticed the faint flecks of hazel that were only visible in the right light. She observed the shape of his mouth and drank in the sight of his soft kissable lips she stared at his neck and suddenly felt a pang of resentment towards his clothes for being so close to him. She....

She mentally shook herself and snapped out of her daydream. She was fantisising about a man who was no longer available, a man who she herself had cast aside and all this was doing was making it worse. She stood up and walked to the stairs before shouting up them.

Sharon: Come on kids hurry up, your dads waiting!!!
Faith: Coming mum!!

Sharon walked back to the living room where dennis was quietly waiting.

Sharon: They wont be long
Dennis: How is Faith?

Sharon was taken a back by this sudden tenderness

Sharon: She's ok, she's grounded but I think she's learnt her lesson. Have you spoken to Brandy?
Dennis: Not yet
Sharon: Oh dennis come on you said you would
Dennis: And I will just not now

With that Faith ran down the stairs and landed at the bottom with a flourish, her newly replenished curls bobbing slightly behind her. Alyss arrived soon after, her cheeks flushed from the sudden exuberance.

Alyss: Hi dad we're ready
Dennis: Got all you're stuff?
Faith: Yep
Dennis: Right well we better be going then before Brandy wonders where we've all got to

Faith and Alyss exchanged a quick look towards each other and they both felt a rush of something resembling sympathy for their mother

Sharon: Ok girls time to go I'll see you tomorrow ok.

She gave each girl a swift kiss and a hug and turned to dennis

Sharon: Can you have them back by three.
Dennis: Sure
Sharon: Ok. Bye have fun
Dennis: We will

Sharon couldnt meet his eye ,as he walked out the door with their daughters in tow , for fear that he would notice the burning look in her eye and think it was something it wasnt. One thing was for sure thought and that was that dennis had obviously moved on with his life and sharon would have to do the same. She couldnt just hang around waiting for another dennis to come along. It had been a long time since sharon had dated properly, nearly fifteen years but the nervousness inside her made her tingle with anticipation. She couldnt help but think that if she found someone else then that aching knot in her stomach might one day dissapear as swiftly as dennis did...

Part 11



It was the next weekend before sharon finally had the courage to go out. Dennis had Ryan and the twins for the night and Chrissie had offered to take Faith and Alyss claiming that they would be company for james and hannah.
Sharon couldnt help but feel nervous she had spent nearly two hours getting ready but she still felt a mess. It all felt so wrong, so un-natural.
In the end she had a quick glass of wine before she left and that seamed to steady her nerves...a bit.
She took a long deep breath as she plunged into the noisy surroundings of the club. She forced herself not to think of the kids, not to think of dennis or brandy, not to think of tomorrow. Tonight was for her and she needed not to think about everyone else, just for one night she had to put herself before eveyone else.
She walked to the bar, sat quietly at a bar stool and ordered a drink. The rugged barman handed her the drink with a quirky smile.

Barman: Have we met before
Sharon: I dont think so I dont really come here often

He looked at her a darker look forming in his eyes that made sharon intimidated and at the same time made her tingle with anticipation.

Barman: My mistake...I'm Niel by the way
Sharon: I'm sharon, nice to meet you
Niel: The pleasures all mine

Sharon flinched with an uncomfortable flashback and a heavy sense of deja vous from a scene some sixteen years ago in a whole different country


"Dry white wine please" she said in a honey coated voice
"coming right up by the way have you been here before you look familiar"
Sharon blushed and fluttered her eyelashes...she had him!
"No i dont think so, by the way I'm Sharon nice to meet you"
"The pleasures all mine" he said passing her the wine "my names dennis"


Sharon was shaken by the sudden flaskback but shook her head and carried on with a strict determination to enjoy herself.
She chatted to Niel for hours. He was recently divorced with a daughter no older than Ryan and he too was trying to get back into the dating pool.
He seemed slightly shocked when sharon timidly revealed that she was the mother to five but listenened to her description of them all with a captive attention before revealing that he adorred kis and wished he'd had more than just the one.

Sharon: Faith, thats the eldest, she's so head-strong and she bright too. Its a clever person who outsmarts her.Then there's Alyss, that Alyss with a Y and two S's, she's a little more timid but she's beautiful and she doesnt know it and she's extremly polite, never has a bad word against anyone except maybe Faith sometimes. She adores Faith but she's forever in her shadow.
Niel: And how old is she?
Sharon: She's nine. There's just thirteen months between her and Faith.
Niel: Tell me about the others
Sharon: Well Ryans just turned four but he likes to think he's so much older. But he had the cutest little mop of curls and he has Faiths charming looks. After he was born we thought that was it. Everything was perfect but then the twins came along as a blessing in disguise.

Niel let out a small laugh. Sharon was s comfortable talking to him.

Sharon: They're both one now but they will always be th babies of the family. They still look nearly identical. they're just the male and female versions of each other. Their personalities anre starting to show through now though. Toby is a lot like Ryan. He's quiet enough most of the time but when he plays up he can scream for hours. Lilly on the other hand hardly ever cries and is most like Alyss. They both try to be happy all the time and make the best of a situation unlike Faith who will go out of her way to cause trouble and be awkward.

Niel smiled at her again and she found herself smiling back. Then his face changed to a sad look.

Niel: Well its late and..

Sharon looked at her watch and swore

Sharon: Damn it I was supposed to pick Faith and Alyss up over an hour ago Chrissie is going to go mental.
Niel: Chrissie? Chrissie Watts?

Sharon nodded

Niel:She works at the Vic right?
Sharon: Thats right she's my step mum, why do you know her
Niel: In a way
Sharon: Right well maybe I'll see you there sometime
Niel: Yeah maybe a specific time like 8 'o' clock friday night
Sharon: Yeah maybe

Sharon blushed at her own flirting and said her goodbyes before going to collect her daughters and face a disgruntled Chrissie. For the first time in a long time she felt content and the next day when Dennis dropped Ryan and the twins off she found that the knot in her stomach was still there...but only just.

Part 12



It was a week after Sharon had met Niel at the club and things were going really well. They had been on two more dates and today Niel was due to meet the kids.

It was four o clock and the whole family, obviously minus dennis, were sat in the kitchen. Faith and Alyss doing homework, the twins taking a brief nap, Ryan playing with an old piece of play doh and Sharon painting he nails and anticipating Niels arrival. He was taking them to play miniture golf. Miniture golf with five kids was bad enough as it was but miniture golf with Faith and her overactive brain was even worse
Faith stopped chewing at the end of her pencil and closed her maths book, the pages making a neat slapping noise.

Faith: So whats his name again?
Sharon: Niel
Faith: Thats a stupid name

Ryan gurgled from his highchair and threw down his play doh

Ryan: Stupid!!

Sharon scowled at Faith for encouraging him and picked up the play doh and returned it to the happy toddler.

Faith: Its not my fault he copies me, Ryan just knows I'm right. It is a stupid name.
Sharon: Faith for once in you're life just be nice
Alyss: I'm sure he's lovely mum
Sharon: Thankyou Alyss

Faith pulled a face at her sister

Faith: Well I think he sounds stupid and I refuse to like him
Sharon: Fine, if you want to sulk thats up to you but you are still going to come with us and you will be polite, understood?
Faith: Yeah whatever, its not like...

There was a brief knock at the door.

Sharon: That'll be him, now come on put you're coats on. Alyss will you sort Ryan while I get the door. Faith watch Toby and Lilly and remember. BE NICE.

Sharon dissapeared into the hallway and was followed back to the kitchen with a smiling Niel holding a large bunch of flowers.

Niel: Oh here these are for you, I saw them and they reminded me of you.

Sharon blushed and took the flowers muttering something about putting them in water. Faith rolled her eyes.
Niel looked to Sharon

Niel: Come on then introduce me to your wonderful kids.

Sharon smiled but quickly decided it would be best to end with Faith rather than begin with her.

Sharon: Well these are the twins, Toby and Lilly

She indicated to the two sleeping babies in their travel seats, almost identical appart from the respective blue and pink bobble hats they were wearing.

Niel: Aww they're so sweet.
Sharon: Well they can be when they're not screaming.
Niel: And this must be Ryan

Sharon lifted the little boy out of his chair and passed him to Niel. Faith glared and wondered why her mother would just go ahead and trust someone with her little brother like that.

Niel: And how old might you be Ryan

Ryan held up four of his chubby little fingers

Niel: Four!! Well aren't we a big boy

Ryan smiled a gappy grin and Sharon smiled too. It was all going so well and with Alyss next her predictive politeness made her the child Sharon felt most sure would go down a treat.

Niel handed Ryan back to Sharon and turned to Alyss who stepped a little closer towards the protection Faith gave.

Sharon: This is Alyss.
Niel: Its nice to meet you Alyss
Alyss: Its very nice to meet you too
Niel: Well aren't you a nice little girl.

Alyss blushed and Faith rolled her eyes again

Niel: Have you ever played miniture golf before Alice..

Faith couldnt help but interupt.

Faith: Its AlYss, you have to sound the Y or its wrong

Niel glanced at a bubbling Faith but turned back to Alyss.

Niel: Sorry Alyss
Alyss: Its ok and no I haven't
Niel: Well thats good, we can both learn together.

Alyss smiled her prettiest smile at him and forgot all about her sisters rudeness.
Sharon took a deep breath and waited for the introduction of her eldest child

Niel: And you must be Faith I presume.
Faith: I wouldnt presume anything if I were you but yes I am

Sharon cringed and spoke to Faith with her warning tone

Sharon: Faith...
Niel: No sharon its ok

Faith gave a sly grin

Niel: It must be nice being the eldest
Faith: Sometimes...
Niel: Your mum says you're closest to Alyss
Faith: We're best friends

Alyss gave a secret smile to know that her sister cared

Niel: What about Ryan?
Faith: He's ok but he's a boy and besides he's still a baby

Niel gave a hollow laugh and sharon replied with a nervous twitter to accompany him.

Niel: The twins are still babies
Faith: Yeah and...

She suddenled gave though and wondered where exactly he was going with this. He was trying to make her feel good about being the eldest. He really was stupid.

Niel:It must be kind of nice having twins in the family

Faith felt a twinge and sharon inhaled deeply, exchanging looks with Alyss and praying for the conversating to end before Niel touched one of Faiths sore points and Faith exploded.

Faith: Its ok

Faith was talking through gritted teeth, how dare he? She was really starting to hate him.
Niel seemed oblivious to the threat he posed.

Niel: Not too great for them though, having to share everything.
Faith: I suppose so.

Niel laughed to himself as if he'd gotten to the punchline of a joke and couldnt wait to share it. He smiled fondly at Faith

Niel: Bet you're glad you aren't a twin, aye Faith.

He'd done it. Niel smiled to himself unaware of the damage he'd done. Alyss clenched her fists, partly in humility for her sister and partly out of anticipation for what Faith would do now. Sharon bit at her top lip and groaned inwardly, why oh why hadn't she told him, and Faith...well Faith went mad. She screamed at Niel and her mother before bursting into fits of uncontrollable tears and racing up the stairs. Alyss ran after her in support.
Niel looked at Sharon perplexed

Niel: Err ok what did I say wrong.

Sharon sighed

Sharon: Faith is a twin, her brother died when he was a baby, his name was jacob.

Niel sighed and shook his head but still didnt seem too sorry

Niel: Oops
Sharon: I should go check on her
Niel: Nah leave it babes she'll calm down on her own

Sharon blinked and for a moment stopped to work out what she found more offensive, being told how to take care of her children or being called babes. But none of it mattered because she listened to him, and while Alyss was upstairs doing her best to comfort a sobbing Faith, Sharon was downstairs in the kitchen having a cup of coffee with Niel and discussing their next date.

Faith flung herself onto the bed in a fit of tears. The red hot tears of anger burned at her face, leaving a salty trail down her cheek. Alyss came in behind her and placed a comforting arm around her as Faith buried her head into the pillow.

Faith: I hate him.
Alyss: Oh come on Faith its not that bad
Faith: It is. I hate him. I hate him. I hate him.

Faith screamed and threw a teddy headlong across the room. Alyss flinched.

Alyss: It was the twin thing wasnt it
Faith: NO!
Alyss: Oh dont sulk faith you look ugly when you sulk

Faith blinked

Alyss: You never even knew Jacob, why does it upset you so much.
Faith: IT DOESNT!!!
Alyss: Fay stop screaming at me, its not nice and it does so upset you. You're crying now nad you always cry when we go to the grave, god sometimes you cry more than mum.
Faith: You wouldnt understand.
Alyss: Try me

Alyss's bright green eyes glittered as they reflected the mid afternoon sunlight.

Faith: Hah! Its too late to play stupid miniture golf now anyway that'll have wrecked it for him.
Alyss: Fay stop changing the subject.

Faith sat up straight and budged up allowing Alyss to sit on the bed beside her.

Faith: Even though I didnt know Jacob I still miss him
Alyss: But why?
Faith: Because he was my twin, we were two halves of a whole and without him thats all I'll ever be. Half.
Alyss: Trust me you're the most wholesome person I know

Faith smiled warmly at her sister

Faith: I kow I'm a full person but, me and Jacob, at one point we were one person. We were born together. We nearly died together and sometime I hate it when Toby and Lilly are labelled as th twins because I'm a twin too and its not fair.
Alyss: Ok I'm sorry it was pretty stupid of Niel to say that but maybe he didnt know besides I'm pretty sure that isnt the reason you dont like him.

Faith looked at her before looking down, her focus resting on her hands.

Faith: It just feels wrong
Alyss: What does?
Faith: Talking to him when we still see dad
Alyss: Faith being polite to Niel doesnt mean you like him more than dad
Faith: I dont like him at all I hate him!
Alyss: Ok whatever but we have to move on. Mum and Dad aren't together anymore and we have to accept that. Thye moved on we have to too. Anyway you weren't like this with Brandy.
Faith: That was different.
Alyss: Why?
Faith: She had good make up I could borrow

Alyss gave a small laugh

Alyss: Fay has anyone ever told you you're one in a million
Faith: Sure

Faith grinned a cocky grin at her sister

Alyss: Come on we better go down before they think I've drowned in you're tears.
Faith: You go on I'll meet you down there
Alyss: Ok
Faith: Oh and Ally
Alyss: Yeah?
Faith: I might still want Jacob but you're still the best sister I could ever have and ...I...I love you...even though I will deny it strongly under pain of death.

Alyss laughed again and Faith smiled at her.

Alyss: You know what Faith I think thats possibly the nicest thing you've ever said to me

And with that Alyss turned the corner and headed downstairs leaving Faith to follow her

Sharon giggled again as Niel told her yet another one of his jokes. It was half five and the pair were sat in the living room and were waiting for Dennis to arrive. He had agreed to watch the kids while they went out, it would also be the first time he had met Niel or stayed in the house for longer than a few minutes since the split.

The doorbell went and Faith ran down the stairs.

Faith: I'll get it. I'll get it.

Dennis couldnt help be nervous as he put his finger to the doorbell. Faith and Alyss ahd informed him that sharon had a new partner but there was no way he could prepare himself for meeting him.
A beaming Faith answered the door and let him in.

Faith: Hi dad.
Dennis: Hi angel where's your mum?
Faith: In the front room, with him

Dennis had to smile at Faiths spiteful tone and followed her into the living room where a still giggly sharon got up from the sofa and asked him if he wanted a coffee. Dennis declined and began to eyeball them man she was now sat next too. There was something Dennis didnt like. Something in his eyes.
Dennis held out his hand and Niel returned the gesture completing the handshake.

Niel: Hi I'm Niel and you must be Dennis
Dennis: Yeah thats me.

Faith could feel the tension and sat down next to her dad. If it all blew up she wanted to be here to report it all to Alyss, who was at her music lesson, later.

Sharon: well we better be going aye Niel.
Dennis: Dont leave on my account
Sharon: We're not

Sharons blood began to boil slightly. Why did dennis always think everything was about him.

Dennis: Then stay a bit, we can all get to know each other a bit better

That was the last thing sharon wanted.

Sharon: We really have to go...
Dennis: So Niel do you have a job?
Niel: I'm an IT consultant for a company based in kent
Dennis: Sounds interesting...
Niel: Not really...look lets cut to the chase and why dont you say the things you really want to know?
Dennis: Fine by me, so have you been married before.
Sharon: Dennis...!!!
Niel: Yes I was married for five years.
Dennis: Kids?
Niel: One, a daughter. She's four her name's katie I see her at weekends.
Dennis: Why did your marriage break down?
Sharon: Dennis!!! That really is enough, come on Niel lets go.

Niel stood up to leave. Dennis stood up too and shook his and again, firmer this time. Faith again noted the tension between the pair and couldnt help but comment under her breath.

Faith: Bye mum... bye stupid

If Niel noticed he didnt say anything but dennis definatly heard and stiffled a giggle before winking at his daughter.

Sharon: We'll be back by eight ok but make sure ryans in bed. Alyss will be back fron her lesson by six. Got that.
Dennis: Sharon I can manage my own kids I did it for the last ten years.
Sharon: Yeah and in that ten years your children have been kidnapped, shot, almost stabbed, subjected to emotional upset and are know going through the seperation of their parents so I wouldnt say you've done too great a job.

it was a cheap shot. Dennis was a great dad and sharon knew it but anger and frustration had taken over. She wanted him to hurt. And now it was too late, she was walking out of the door and climbing into a taxi Niels protective arm wrapped tightly around her. He as going to make it ok again.

Sharon smiled and ran a finger around the rim of her glass. It felt good to be out again. It felt good to be happy. She was happy, wasnt she?
They were sat in a small bar just outside walford that sharon had never had the pleasure of visiting before. Niel had gone to get the drinks and sharon was left alone with her thoughts. She couldnt help but feel guilty for what she had said earlier to dennis and wished she could take it back but it was too late the damage was done and now he probably hated her. She sighed then realised she didnt know whether she was supposed to care whether he hated her or not. Of course she cared he was still the father of her children, he was still a big part of her life. She smiled the issue resolved and grinned up at Niel when he returned. He didnt have the drinks.

Sharon: Whats wrong they run out of alcohol or something.

Sharon gave a small laugh but Niel didnt seem to see the humour

Niel: The ques are massive and i dont really like it here anyway.
Sharon: Oh...well...err
Niel: Tell you what why dont we go have a quiet drink in the vic
Sharon: Oh I dont know its a bit...
Niel: ...public?
Sharon: Its not that its just some of my family will be there and they dont exactly know the ins and outs of my breakup.
Niel: You mean Chrissie
Sharon: Yeah and Jake, thats her husband and their kids, James and Hannah

She paused

Sharon: Niel...how...how do you know Chrissie?
Niel: Long story, look come on we'll just have one drink ok?

Sharon gave in

Sharon: Ok I'll call a cab

The vic was half empty and was mainly occupied by daily regulars. Sharon sat down and sent Niel for the drinks. He was served by Jake.

Niel: HI, I'd like...

But Chrissie had already spotted him and quickly swept the full length of the bar telling Jake that she would serve him. Jake went up the other end to hush a group of overly noisy punters.

Niel: Well if it isnt Chrissie Burton, or should I say Watts.
Chrissie: Actually its Moon. What the hell are you doing here?
Niel: Well I say you havent lost you're charm and not that its any of you're business but I'm dating you're lovely step daughter.
Chrissie: No not Sharon the last thing she needs right now is you messing up her life. I'll tell her what you're really like. I'll tell her about Emma. Leave Sharon alone.
Niel: Chrissie if I was you I'd keep that pretty little mouth of yours shut. Or some of your precious little secrets might become public knowledge. What would the children say?

Chrissie was pale.

Chrissie: Leave my kids out of this.
Niel: Why I think a nice cosy chat with little James and Hannah might be just what the doctor ordered.
Chrissie: NO Please Niel.
Niel: You keep your nose out of my business and stay away from Sharon and I'll keep quiet got it?

Niel didnt wait for a reply. He gathered up his drinks and made his way over to Sharon, who was smiling at him. She'd heard nothing of his conversation with Chrissie infact she looked as if she was in a dream world. He sat down.

Niel: Why are you so happy?
Sharon: Because I've just made a decision.
Niel: And...
Sharon: And its time to move on with my life, I want you to move in with me and the kids.

Niel looked shocked for a moment the grinned and pulled her into a hug, kissing the top of her head.

Niel: Of course I'll move in with you
Sharon: Hows saturday sound?
Niel: Saturday sounds great.
Sharon: Ok its a date

She smiled then burried her hed into Niel chest and savoured the hug. She was happy, she was content, but had she made the right decision?

Part 17


The following days went by in a blur. Niel was so kind and caring sharon couldnt believe her luck. They went out twice more over the course of three days and at the weekend Sharon, Niel and the kids went to the park for a day out, even that went smoothly until Faith got irritated and kicked up a fuss. All in all the week was a happy one and before sharon knew it it was saturday.
It was the day Niel was due to move in and the whole house was upside down. Faith was being as awkward as possible, Alyss was being overly helpful, Ryan had a cold and wouldnt stop whining and the twins did nothing but cry.
All together this had worn sharons patience thin and she was becoming snappy and quickly losing her temper.

Faith: I just dont get it thats all.
Sharon: There's nothing to get Faith.
Faith: I mean why does Mr Stupid head have to move in with us? You've only known the guy a few weeks.
Sharon: I known him for more than a month now and anyway what does that have to do with anything? This is my decision.

Faith folded her arms and prepared her defence

Faith: You knew dad for years before you went out with each other.
Sharon: That was different and anyway this has nothing to do with your father.
Faith: It has everything to do with dad. Think about it mum its a logical chain of events. You marry dad. You have kids with dad. You beak up from dad. Dad moves out. Dad gets with Brandy. You replace dad with Niel. Niel moves in.

Sharon took a deep breath and stared hard at her daughter, Alyss watched intently from the corner of the room.

Sharon: Dont be smart with me Faith or you'll find yourself grounded for a month.
Faith: Let me spell it out mum. Rebound. R-E-B-O-U-N-D. Thats what this is.
Sharon: He's moving in whether you like it or not Faith so...

Alyss saw the determined look in her sisters face and the glare in her mothers eyes, niether was going to give up or back down.

Faith: I'm just saying that if you want my opinion this whole thing is just a big mistake.
Sharon: Well I dont want your opinion ok so just be quiet and put up with it because this is happening whether you like it or not so get used to it. I dont care what you think Faith at the end of the day I'm your mother and I decide whats best.

Faith closed her mouth and looked at the floor. Sharon looked at her and frowned but made no attempt to say sorry.
Alyss shuffled her feet and flicked a speck of dirt from her jumper.

Alyss: Err maybe we should go out...get out of your way for a bit. We could go play at Ellies house. What do you think mum?
Sharon: I dont know, I mean are you sure her mum wont mind?
Alyss: No it'll be fine, please say we can go?
Sharon: Ok but dont be late back ok because i want you here when Niel arrives

Faith made a small choking noise but sharon ignored her.

Alyss: Thanks mum, see you later. Come on Faith.

Faith followed her younger sister out of the room without a second look at Sharon and the pair left the house, leaving sharon with two less things to think about.
She put down the washing she had been folding and placed a disgruntled Ryan on her hip. She walked across the landing to his bedroom where she placed him in bed and gently stroked his hair until the grouchy tot fell fast asleep.
Sharon could feel his forehead burning beneath her fingertips and made a mental note that if he was no better by morning she would have to call the doctor.
Sharon walked into the bedroom she could briefly call her own and began changing the bed, it was easier when she was doing things, there was less to think about. She liked it that way.

About an hour had passed when sharon heard a knock at the door and a ring of the bell. She looked at her watch. It was 2 o clock, Niel must be early.
She turned towards the doorway of the bedroom and shouted downstairs.

Sharon: COME ON UP, ITS OPEN

She waited and heard the door clap shut but to her surprise it wasnt Niel that appeared at the doorway moments later it was...

Sharon turned round and jumped.

Sharon: Dennis what are you doing here?
Dennis: I thought I'd pop round and see the kids for five munutes
Sharon: Oh...
Dennis: So where is everyone its actually really quiet

Sharon let out a nervous laugh. He was right

Sharon: Toby and Lilly are having their nap and Ryan isnt very well so I've put him to bed.
Dennis: Is he going to be ok
Sharon: I think its just a touch of flu, he'll be fine
Dennis: Oh...where are the girls?
Sharon: They've gone round to play with Ellie
Dennis: When did they leave?
Sharon: About and hour ago...I kinda shouted at Faith I dont think she could wait to get away.
Dennis: What happened?

Sharon took a deep breath

Sharon: Its Niel, he's moving in today and lets just say Faith hasnt exactly warmed to the idea
Dennis: He's moving in? But you've only known the guy two minutes.

Sharon looked at him

Sharon: Thats exactly what Faith said

Dennis smiled a secret smile but sharon could feel her temper flaring up again. It was nothing to do with him, he wasnt part of her life and it was her choice.

Sharon: Well I'll tell you the same as I told her, its happening and thats final. Get used to it.
Dennis: No need to snap I was just saying that...
Sharon: You hadnt known Brandy a week before she moved in with you.
Dennis: That was...
Sharon: ...different?
Dennis: Yes the kids weren't involved.
Sharon: Yes they were
Dennis: Not like this I'm not sure I want a man you hardly know living under the same roof as my children.
Sharon: They're my children too dennis, do you honestly think I'd let any harm come to them.
Dennis: I dont know. I dont know you anymore.

Sharon walked back into the girls room and resumed folding the washing. Dennis followed.

Dennis: Its not just them sharon there's you too
Sharon: Oh what do you care!

Dennis looked at her

Dennis: Oh I care, dont ever say I dont care

Sharon stared at him. A blanket of silence filled the air and the next thing Sharon knew dennis's lips were on hers. She kissed him back crushing her lips against his. He pushed her against the wall and spread a trail of kisses across her neck. She gasped in exstasy. She'd never wanted him more.
Their lips never parted as he led her out of their daughters room and into the bedroom where he pushed her gently onto the bed, their bed. Her head hit the pillow with a soft thud as he fumbled with the buttons on her blouse.
He hesitated at the zip on her skirt and that was it. That split second of hesitation ruined it all.
Sharon jumped up from beneath him and pulled her shirt around herself as reality set in.

Sharon: We cant do this

Dennis got up and stood on the opposite side if the bed to her, afraid now to even be near her. Both of their breathing was ragged and eratic and they were both leant heavily against the wall in a vain attempt ti stop their hearts racing.

Dennis: Yeah your right
Sharon: I am?

She was so confused. Dennis walked round the bed to stand next to her.

Dennis: That was wrong and irresponsible of me. I mean I have Brandy and you, you have Niel
Sharon: Yeah you're right I have...

But before he could help himself dennis found his lips on hers again and she was kissing him back, her arms looped around his neck and clinging on for dear life. The only coherent thought she had was how good it felt to be back in his arms again. Then...

Faith: MUM!! we're home!!

Faiths voice rang out from the hallway downstairs and the couple heard the front door slam shut.
The pair sprang apart and Sharon pushed past dennis, wiping traces of tears from her eyes and running downstairs.
As Sharon greeted her children in the kitchen and enquired about there days activities, Dennis sneaked out of the front door without a word to any of them and walked down the street more upset and confused than ever.

Faith and Alyss went up to their room and sharon was left to reflect on the events of the last hour. He had kissed her. He had kissed her. He had said he still cared for her...still loved her?
She was so confused. When they had first split up she knew that neither of them had wanted it but then he moved in with Brandy and sharon assumed that he was over her, that he had moved on. Obviously she was wrong. And now she was with Neil and yet she found herself kissing dennis and wanting to never let go. Did she still love him? She had thought she was over him but maybe not.
There was a knock at the door. This time it was Neil along with a single box of his things.

Sharon: Is that it?

She indicated to the box

Neil: Hey I travel light

He walked over and kissed her on the forehead then the mouth. Sharons lips burned as she remembered dennis's lips on hers not hours before. She blushed and gently pulled away.

Sharon: Come on lets go get this stuff away then maybe we can all have dinner together.
Neil: I was thinking we skip straight to dessert.

He kissed her again, bruising her lips as she wriggled from his grasp

Sharon: But the kids...
Neil: Forget the kids they'll be fine they can look after themselves for a few hours now come on.

He walked towards the stairs, pulling sharon behind him.

Sharon: What about Ryan he's ill I should watch him

She couldnt do this. She couldnt sleep with Neil in a bed that had nearly occupied her and dennis earlier that day. Neil came so that he was within inches of her face.

Neil: You need to relax babe. Forget the kids. There's more to life than them. You have me now and for the next few hours I want your undevided attention.

Sharon nodded and smiled nervously before following him to the bedroom and sealing her fate for the next few hours.

Sharon rolled onto her side and squeezed her eyes shut. This all felt so wrong. Neil climbed out of bed and headed downstairs to get a glass of water, leaving sharon alone.
She felt dirty and tainted but she was still confused. Her head was trying to convince her that she loved Neil and that this was good but her heart and now her body told her otherwise.
She ached all over and wiped a silent tear from her eye. It was just different she told herself. It was the adjustment that was making her teary, it was hormones. She gathered the sheets around her and shook her head before reaching for the phone and dialling a familiar number.

Sharon: D...Dennis...is that you?

Her voice was shaking and her head was starting to spin.

Sharon: I need to see you
Dennis: Now?
Sharon: No tomorrow in the park before I pick the kids up from school
Dennis: Er ok...look is this about earlier because...
Sharon: Look I cant talk about this now

She was worried that neil would be back.

Dennis: Ok tomorrow at the park, its a date.

Sharon smiled slightly at the comment but didnt reply. She put the phone down and awaited Neils return.

Part 20



Neil padded down the stairs on his quest for a glass of water. The house was quiet. He assumed the twins to still be asleep, Ryan to still be in bed and Faith and Alyss to have gone out. He was almost right. Four out of five isnt bad. He walked towards the kitchen and pushed open the door. There at the kitchen table sat a disgruntled Faith.
She looked him up and down and it occured to Neil how odd his appearence would startle most ten year old girls. But Faith wasnt most girls and the fact that he was dressed just in his underwear didnt seem to bother her.

Faith: Are you getting up now.
Neil: What?
Faith: Are you and mum getting up now, its just I didnt think adults were supposed to take naps.

Neil smiled at her own niavity.

Neil: Err we weren't sleeping.

He laughed at himself but Faith didnt seem to find it funny

Faith: I know I'm not stupid, god I'm ten not two
Neil: Oh really so what do you think was happening

Faith shrugged

Faith: You were sleeping with her, having sex, making love. Whatever you want to call it.

Faith said it all in a rather offhand voice that irritated Neil.

Neil: You dont seem to bothered by that

He was talking through gritted teeth

Faith: Well I've come to the conclusion I dont have to care about anything involving you since you wont be around for too long.

She was looking straight at him.

Neil: Meaning?
Faith: Meaning I dont think you'll last five minutes
Neil: Oh really, you know Faith I can make your life very difficult

Faith got to her feet and stared at him.

Faith: Yeah thats what I thought then I realised that I can make your life twice as difficult as you could ever make mine. For example how would you like to wake up with shaving foam in your shoes or pretty blue pictures drawn all over your face. You know I happen to be very good with a biro.
Neil: Pranks? You think you'll get rid of me with pranks.

Faith laughed in his face

Faith: I dont need to get rid of you, all I need to do is show my mum what you're really like and then with any luck I'll never have to see you again.

Faith smiled him her smugest smile before skipping towards the door but she never got there.

Neil: Why you little...

He grabbed her arm and squeezed tight. She gasped and whimpered as she struggled to get free.

Neil: Now you listen to me. You even think of interfearing and I'll have you packed off to boarding school before you can say bobs your uncle
Faith: Jake's my uncle
Neil: Stop being smart with me missy
Faith: Mum would never sent me to boarding school and I'd never go.
Neil: Well in that case I'd have to find another way of getting rid of you

He squeezed harder on her arm to make his point, forcing her to fall to her knees in pain before throwing her across the room and leaving the kitchen, heading back up to Sharon.
Faith winced and pulled up her sleeve. There at the top of her arm were five perfect circular bruises...fingermarks.
Faith scowled at the retreating figure of Neil. This wasnt over...

Sharon stepped out of the door and braced herselfbut to her relief the wind did not nip at her skin as she had expected it to but rather whipped around her in an airy blanket of warmth.
Sharon wasnt fooled. The pregnant clouds overhead threatened to relieve their load in a thundery torrent of rain at any moment. Sharon pulled the coat around her and started the short walk to the park. Neil was at work, Faith, Alyss and Ryand were at school and the twins were with Pauline for the day. This may be Sharon's only chance to talk to Dennis.
She reached the park, sitting down on the swings and waited for five minutes before he arrived and sat silently on the swing next to her. For a while neither spoke. Dennis broke the silence.

Dennis: Are you ok?
Sharon: You know what, I dont know anymore
Dennis: Look about yesterday...I'm sorry I...
Sharon: Dont be, I'm not

He looked at her, she looked back the knot in her stomach tightening. Had she meant that? Had she wanted the kiss? Enjoyed it? She was so confused, her head was spinning. She took a deep breath. She had to do this.

Sharon: Dennis, I love you and I dont think I'll ever stop loving you but its over and yesterday can never happen again because I have to move on. I'm with Neil now and you have to let me be happy which means no more kissing, no more us.

She was trying to be stern but her voice was shaking again. She looked away, tears in her eyes. Dennis rose from the swing and knelt infront of her. He ran a hand down her face and sighed. She felt her skin tingle at his touch. He took hold of her hand, kissed it and led her over to a nearby bench. They sat down as close to each other as they could and he placed an arm around her, hugging her to his chest. She burst into tears, soaking his jacket. His heart broke at the sound of her sobs but he knew she was right. They could never work. they were doomed from the start and could only put the last ten years down to sheer good luck. They both had to move on and encounters like yesterday didnt help. This was goodbye. The next time they met they would be different people.

Dennis: So...divorce right?

She winced as though the very word had cut through her. She looked up at him with a teary face but her arms were still wrapped tightly around him.

Sharon: We dont have a choice. We cant carry on like this, its not fair and if we got back together who's to say that in another five years it wont happen again. We cant do it dennis its not fair on us and its not fair on the kids.

She rested her head back on his chest and began to cry again. He hugged her tightly, nevr wanting to let go and soon he found he was crying too.

Dennis: I will never stop loving you, never forget that.

He was almost whispering through the tears that ran down his face.

Sharon: And I will always care

She attempted a smile but failed. She looked at him and kissed him softly. He kissed her again more passionatly before she pulled away and shook her head.

Sharon: I have to go I have...
Dennis: I know the kids

They looked at each other before letting out one last whisper

Dennis: Goodbye sharon
Sharon:...bye...

Sharon turned round and forced herself not to turn back, denying herself one last look at the love of her life. It was over she really had to move on and she was sure that Neil was the man to help her do that.

Part 22



It was three days since Sharon had spoken to Dennis and the house had returned to some kind of normaility. Neil had settled in, Sharon seemed content and the kids seemed to like him...well most of the kids that was.
Faith blatently refused to be nice to him and this had caused a few arguaments with her mother. Faith had not shared the information about Neils outburst towards her with anyone, not even Alyss with whom she shared everything. The tiny bruises had faded now into an ugly yellowed colour but Faiths anger had not faded and now was the time to exact her revenge.
It was early, exceptionally early, about four in the morning. The sun had not yet come up and nearly all the occupants of the household were fast asleep. Faith was wide awake and decided now was the time to take action.
She slipped out of bed, shivering as her feet touched the floor and wrapped her dressing gown tightly around herself. She knelt down on the floor and extracted a rucksack from beneath her bed. Inside it were certain objects that she had acquired over the past few days. She slipped the rucksack neatly on her back and, careful not to wake Alyss, slipped out of the room down the landing.

It was still pitch black and the wind was howling but Faith wasnt scared. Alyss was scared of the dark but not Faith and besides determination had taken over and nothing could stop her now. She slipped into the room Sharon currently shared with Neil, thankful that they were both heavy sleepers. She placed her bag on the floor and looked at the sleeping forms that lay together in the bed.
Her mother was the image of an angel, lips slightly parted, hair splayed out around her. Neil on the other hand looked exactly how Faith imagined a sleeping pig to look and he sounded like one too. Faith let a sly smile slip onto her lips, opened the bag and set to work.
Firstly she extracted a pot of jam from the bag and looked around the room for her first opportunity. Aha! Faith took the lid off the jam and tipped it up letting the translucent red substance flow smoothly onto Neils slippers before the rubbed it in and placed the slippers back in their original spot. She couldnt help letting out a whisper.

Faith: Told you I'd make you pay

She stiffled a triumphant giggle and placed the jam back in the bag. It was time to get serious. She walked over to the wardrobe and took out the suit she knew he would be wearing to work the next day and layed in flat on the floor infront of her. She pulled a packet of chalk from the bag and began her masterpiece on the back of the jacket. When she was finished that too went back in the wardrobe where it belonged.
She paused for a moment before deciding on her next conquest. It the end she chose his glasses. She'd only seen him wear them a few times but he wore them every morning to read the newspaper with his breakfast. It had soon transpired that Neils story did check out. Although he had been working as a barman the night sharon met him he had just been helping out a friend and was infact an IT consultant for a compant based in kent, just as he had told dennis but Faith still thought he was hiding something and so it was with great pleasure that she took his glasses and drew a thick black line in permanent marker around the rim, then in one final malicious attack on his character she picked out of her bag a packet of glittery hearts and stars that usually lived in the make up box she shared with alyss and using her fine skills with a pritt stick began to carefully glue them into a pattern on Neils forehead.

Faith: Aww dont you look pretty, you idiot

Satisfied that she had done enough for one night Faith slipped out of the room and back into bed, shoving the rucksack into a corner and smiling, for once she was looking forward to the morning.

Faith: Sweet dreams stupid

Part 23



Faiths eyes flicked open and she jumped out of bed with a start, grabbing at the bedside clock. Alyss was still asleep. Faith studied her for a moment. Even though they were born only thirteen months apart, Alyss would always be Faiths little sister and she would always be fiercly protective of her. Faith thought back to when they were nearly seperated, when they were kidnapped. Faith had been four, nearly five and alyss had been three when it had happened.
Faiths mind flooded with memories she would rather forget and her hand flew to her back. Even through the pyjamas she could feel the knotted scar where the bullet had been removed. It wasnt until years later that she realised just how much Alyss had risked her own life in order to save her but for weeks afterwards she had sat up all night, too afraid to go to slepp. Even now she was still plagued with nightmares. Dennis and Sharon seemed to think she had forgotten it and none of them ever spoke about it but you dont forget a thing like that, you dont forget dying...
Faith remembered more clearly than anything the final minutes before her heart had stopped and she had temporarily slipped away. She remembered every word she had said to her father and she remembered the message of comfort she had left for her mother and sister. They were like photographs burned into her memory and imprinted in her mind. Yes she remembered dying and she remembered coming round in hospital days later surrounded by tubes and weeping parents and being confused and afraid, but Alyss was there and that made it alright because little Faith Rickman, young as she was, also remembered her last thought before she slipped into oblivion, it was of Alyss and how much she would miss her.
Thats why she loved her and thats why she would never let her down because although Faith looked out for Alyss and protected her as every big sister would it was really Alyss that had saved Faith. She had risked her life and almost died herself but more than that she had given Faith a reason to come back. Just when Faith was beginning to believe that the world was a bad place filled with bad people like David Dalton Alyss had given her a reason to hope and restored her childish faith in the world and for that Faith would be eternally grateful.
Faith tore her eyes away from her sisters serene sleeping form and looked back at her alarm clock. It was three minutes to eight. Showtime.
Sure enough three minutes later Faith could hear the alarm clock go off in her mothers room in complete timing with her own. Alyss heard the clock and woke up with a groggy yawn but Faith was already out the door and running to the bathroom determined to be ready for school in record time. There was no way on Earth she was going to miss this.
She hurridly dressed and dawdled on the landing before entering the room Ryan shared with the twins. It was the one closest to Sharon and Neil room, she could hear everything.

Niel yawned and turned over. Sharon was already awake and smiled at him sleepily. He smiled back and swung his legs out of bed, slipping his feet into his awaiting slippers. That was when the fun started.

Neil: EEUUGGG!!! What the hell?

Faith smiled. Maybe strawberry jam wasnt to his liking.

Sharon: What is it?
Neil: My slippers they're all sticky...hey that looks like jam

Neil had noticed the tiniest flick of spilt jam flecked on the carpet and wiped it up with his finger, bring it to his lips.

Neil: Tastes like jam too...you know I bet this was Faith

Faith pushed her ear closer to the wall, glad that Neil felt so highly of her.

Sharon: Hey now come on you cant just go accusing her like that.
Neil: Well who else is it gonna be. Toby?

Sharon winced and turned her back at his sarcastic tone but she knew he was right Faith was the most likely suspect.
Neil sighed heavily

Neil: Forget it I'm getting ready for work

He grabbed his clothes including the jacket displaying Faiths chalk masterpiece and traipsed off to the bathroom. Faith smiled. Time for phase two. She looked around the room. Lilly was starting to cry. Faith travelled swiftly to the cot, scared that her sisters cries would attract the attension of her mother, and scooped the baby up into her arms. She smiled at the babys perculier expression.

Faith: Dont worry little one daddy will be back before you know it. At the very least Mr Stupid there will be gone and the we can all be together again. Ok?

She half expected a reply from the tot but was interrupted by the sound of Alyss at the doorway

Alyss: Fay come on, you might as well bring her too she wont go back to sleep now.

Faith grinned brightly at her sister flicking her elegant blonde curls, twinkling her shining hazel eyes and flashing her pearly straight teeth. Alyss frowned

Alyss: What you so happy about?
Faith: Oh you'll see soon enough.

Faith placed a now gurgling lilly on her hip and put her arm around her younger sister. For once she was happy it was a school day, she was happy it was morning and she was happy that she was about to see the result of a very long nights work...

Part 24


Faith couldnt keep the smile off her face all through breakfast and when sharon finally noticed the chalk artwork on the back of Neils jacket she nearly burst with laughter. Neil shook the jacket off and glared at Faith. She smiled back sweetly before tossing her hair and heading upstairs. She didnt need to see his reaction to the glasses or the glitter on his face. She had annoyed him and for her that meant she had won.
It was nearly two weeks later when Faith upped the game. During this time the children had only seen their father once and even then it had been a fleeting visit. He was still wary of being around sharon and needed to be alone, or at least as alone as he could be whilst Brandy was doing her best impression of a limpet. This absence only fuelled Faiths anger and animosity towards Neil. It was time for a new game and faith was determined to win.
This time Faith had decided to use her brains and purely outsmart Neil and irritate him at every available opportunity. Firstly she "accidently" tripped over and demanded that sharon take her to A&E on the same night as the pair had planned to go out. This meant that sharon spent the evening at the hospital and Neil was forced to stay at home and babysit. Next she continually changed his alarm clock meaning that first he was late for work then on two days running he was nearly three hours early. Finally Faith had decided to empty his briefcase and replace his work documents with scribbled drawings that Ryan had done.
It was during this little exploit that things turned sour. Faith was caught by Neil whilst trying to tip the documents into the bin. He raced over and grabbed her by the arm

Neil: Why you little...
Faith: Angel?
Neil: Your gonna pay for this, mark my words
Faith: You wanna bet?

Neil moved towards her but yet again Faith was one step ahead. She let out the loudest scream of her life. Neil reached for her and raised his hand but it was too late. Faiths sream had had the desired effect and Sharon came running into the room before stopping, shocked at the sight infront of her.

Sharon: Whats going on
Faith: He was going to hit me, I was so scared mummy

Faith was hardly ever scared but it was a good lie to pull at sharons heartstrings.

Sharon: Neil?
Neil: This little brat was emptying my briefcase what was I supposed to do. Stand by and watch?
Sharon: You weren't supposed to hit her!
Neil: I didnt
Faith: He has done before
Sharon: What?
Neil: She's a lying brat sharon, dont listen to her. She hates me you know she does and what reason have I got to lie.

Sharon stopped to mull this over and consider her options.

Sharon: Faith go upstairs
Faith: What...?
Sharon: Now Faith

Faith reluctantly left the room but instead of going upstairs she pressed her ear firmly against the door to hear what was being said inside.

Sharon: Did you?
Neil: Did I what?
Sharon: Hit her
Neil: No
Sharon: Really?
Neil: So what if I did she's a spoilt little brat who could do with a good smacking.
Sharon: She's my daughter! If you ever lay a hand on her...
Neil: What, you'll chuck me out. Honestly baby you need to lighten up
Sharon: I'm not your baby. I'm starting to think Faiths right, maybe you are just a stupid little man and I was a fool to think otherwise you're just...

Sharon felt the sharp sting of the slap long after it had hit her and the neat sound rang in her ears. She stood shocked, a hand clamped to her face. She turned to Neil and removed her hand. He seemed to be fuming but softened at the sight of her red cheek. He cooed and swept her into his arms, stroking her hair.

Neil: Aww sorry baby but thats what happens when you lie. Faith lied and she paid for it, you lied and now you've paid for it because I wont have people lying ok. Faith is a bad girl who deserved to be punished. You know that dont you?

He pulled away and shook her for a response. She dutifully answered out of fear and uncertainty.

Sharon: Yes
Neil: Good girl, now I'm going to work and when I get home you're going to be all dressed up and we're going to go out and when we get back you're going to sleep like you would your husband because I have said so and you're going to be good and listen. Yes?

Sharon nodded at the floor

Neil: Good because if you dont Faith wont be the only one I hurt.

He kissed her cheek and whispered in her ear before leaving.

Neil: Good girl, now no more lying.

He walked out the door as Faith scuttled away and Sharon sank into the nearest chair in tears.
That night they did go out and for many nights after that and Neil would often lose his temper and lash out at Sharon but she never pushed him again for fear of endangering her children. She was hit often but the price for it not to happen was too high and so, it continued.

Hi thanks for the replies and sorry it has taken so long to post the next part but re coursework took a little longer than expected lol. Its due in tomorrow and I've only just started it :rolleyes: Looking foreward to writing the next few bits of this because I know what happens lol but dont hate me :) Sorry its a bit long but I couldnt really split it into two parts



Part 25



The next few weeks were some of the hardest of sharons life. Neil lashed out at her on a regular basis and it was starting to effect the kids too. Most of the time it was nothing, Neil would give her a cruel little pinch or put her down in public contradicting her every word but sometimes it was worse, a lot worse. The most recent of these events had happened late one Friday night. Neil had come home drunk and sharon had challenged him. As a result Sharon had ended up with a black eye and a split lip.
The thing that upset her most wasnt the fact that he hit her, she had had that before, she could deal with that. It was the fact that she was afraid to stand up for herself, she was afraid of what he might do and she couldnt see her life ever getting any better than it was at the moment.
It was the day after Neil had hit her, saturday, and dennis was coming to collect the kids any minute now but to faiths annoyance sharon was still in her bedroom.

Faith: MUM! come on dad will be here soon

She was shouting through the door but it didnt seem to be doing any good

Faith: Mum come on!!!we have to go soon

Alyss observed her sisters blunt technique before walking over and taing lead of the situation.

Alyss: Mum? Its me Ally. We just want to know you're ok. Please come out. Mum?

There was movement on the other side of the door and sharon walked out of the door head held high straight past her daughters and down the stairs. Alyss looked to her sister

Alyss: Did you see that?
Faith: Yeah and I bet I know how it happened too

Faith raced down the stairs with Alyss close behind her. Sharon was in the kitchen re-arranging Ryan and the twins clothing. Today Ryan was wearing his favourite Thomas the tank engine jumper and a worn pair of jeans. Toby was in a green top and a pair of cute baby dungerees with a teddy bear motif. Lilly was dressed in a white babygrow embelished with a heart design and a fluffy jumper with a large daisy on it.
Faith didnt hesitate.

Faith: How did that happen?

Sharon didnt need to ask what she meant

Sharon: I fell
Faith: What onto his fist!

Alyss was shocked at her sisters blatent sarcasm

Alyss: Faith you cant say that
Faith: I can say what I like

Alyss noticed the determined note in her sisters voice and shut up.

Faith: Mum Neils a jerk, you saw him the other day. He was going to hit me and now he's hit you hasnt he?

Faith heard her sister take a sharp intake of breath and instantly regretted not telling Alyss about Neil and the bruises that had now faded from her arm.

Alyss: Fay?

Her voice was quiet and small as if she was unsure of herself and the fact she was questioning.

Faith: I'll tell you later

Faith gave her a little smile before turning back to her mother.

Sharon: I dont know what you're on about. I tripped thats all.
Faith: And what about the other week. I heard him shouting at you and I could hear you crying after he'd left too. Whats he still doing here, he tried to hit me dont you care about that.
Sharon: Well maybe Faith you shouldnt have gone about ruining his work he wouldnt have gotten mad at you then would he.

Faith started to think. What if this was all her fault? She had always been sure she was doing the right thing by trying to split sharon and neil up but maybe it was her fault he had wanted to hit her. Maybe it was her fault he had hit her mum. Faith shook her head, determined not to feel sorry for herself.

Faith: Thats not the point, he hit you and he hurt me. Dad never hit me
Sharon: This has nothing to do with your father so dont bring him into this.
Faith: I dont think he'd like the idea of his kids living with someone who hurts them. Please mum its not just us, you have Ryan and the twins to look out for. I can stand up for myself but they're defenceless. Please mum make him move out, make him leave. Please mum, please.

Sharon saw the tears in her daughters eyes and softened but she stuck to her guns

Sharon: He's staying and thats final. I dont want to hear any more of these silly hitting accusations. Stop lying young lady and if you even mention this to your father you'll be grounded till next century got it?

The tears tumbling from Faiths eyes said it all. She was dissapointed in her own mother. Sharon had let her down when she needed her most and Faith suddenly felt so lost. Alyss placed a comforting arm around her and led her to the front room where she offered her a tissue.
Faith scrubbed her eyes dry, angry at herself for crying.

Alyss: Is it true, what you said?

Faith looked at her, disbelief flashed in her eyes and her temper flared up

Faith: Of course it is! I wouldnt lie!
Alyss: Mum doesnt believe you
Faith: Mums being stupid
Alyss: Faith! Dont say that. Stop it Neils a nice man but you just cant accept that can you. You just cant believe that someone could make us as happy as dad!!!
Faith: Neil is nothing like dad!!
Alyss: Stop it Faith! He makes mum happy now grow up
Faith: He hurts he, he makes her unhappy
Alyss: No Faith! Its you and your stupid lies that her making her unhappy!!

The two girls were on their feet and looking at each other Faiths hazel eyes staring straight into Alyss's green ones.

Faith: I dont believe this. I thought if anyone would be on my side it would be you Alyss!
Alyss: Well you were wrong weren't you because I'm not on your side!
Faith: Why are you being like this you've changed
Alyss: No! You have and I dont like the new you. You lie and you play tricks. Your a spoilt lying brat and if Neil did hit you then mums right, you probably did deserve it!!

Faith couldnt believe the venom that was spewing from her younger sisters lips.

Faith: Ally please!
Alyss: No Faith I dont believe you and I'm not talking to you again till you admit you're wrong

Alyss stormed out of the room and Faith was left upset, bewildeed and alone.
But then the doorbell rang and she suddenly felt slightly better after all she was right, dennis wouldnt just let this go. Telling him would solve all of Faiths problems.

Dennis was slightly shocked to be greeted at the door by a tearful Faith. Her cheeks were red and puffy in the aftermath of her fight with Alyss and the silvery tear lines didnt exactly enhance her looks. Dennis stepped through the door.

Faith: Hi daddy

Faith sniffed and wiped her face with her sleeve.

Dennis: Hey baby, whats wrong?
Faith: I had a fight with Alyss
Dennis: Really? Why?

Faith looked up at him, this was her chance.

Faith: I need to talk to you, its about...
Ryan: DADDY!!!

Sharon walked through the door, the twins in her arms and an exited Ryan trailing behind her. The toddler ran between her legs and squeeled eagerly as his father picked him up, swinging him round before settling the little boy on his hip.

Dennis: Hi Ryan and how are you today?
Ryan: I'm fine but my name isnt Ryan its Captain Jellybean.
Dennis: Huh
Sharon: Ignore it its a fase.

Dennis looked up and seemed to notice sharon for the first time. First sharon then the yellowing bruise on her face.

Dennis: Sharon, are you...
Sharon: I'm fine

Sharons voice was stern but dennis quickly noticed that she too had tear marks running down her cheeks. He took his chance.

Dennis: Sharon would you mind if we had a word in private.

Sharon physically squirmed at the thought of being alone with him.

Sharon: I dont know, dont you have to be going?
Dennis: No its fine.

He set Ryan on the floor and handed the twins carry cots to Faith and Alyss who were permanently stood seperate.

Dennis: Here kids go get in the car, Brandy's there I'll be along in a moment I just have to talk to your mum ok?
Faith: Ok dad

The children obediantly stepped out of the house and walked towards the car. Dennis walked into the sitting room and sat on the sofa. Sharon hovered at the door before following.

Dennis: Sharon, does that have anything to do with Faith?

He gestured towards her bruise and sharon shrank back in surprise.

Sharon: No but I suppose it was her that started on about it to you
Dennis: Sharon I do have eyes you know and anyway why should Faith bring it up?
Sharon: We had an arguament.
Dennis: She told me she'd argued with Alyss
Sharon: She did. She saw the bruise and went of on one like she always does accusing Neil of hitting me and making up some stupid story saying he'd threatened her. After she stormed away from me her and Alyss had a fight because Alyss refused to believe her. Alyss knows the truth, that Faith is lying. She accused Faith of being and attention seeker and a spoilt brat.
Dennis: That doesnt sound much like Alyss to me.
Sharon: Well it happened ok
Dennis: And was Faith right, about Neil?

Sharon looked him sternly in the eye

Sharon: No, she's lying

Dennis looked at her

Dennis: You really believe that? You really think that of your own daughter?

Sharon didnt move but looked straight ahead. Dennis knew there was nothing more he could do and stood up to leave but not before having one final say.

Dennis: Sharon I love you, you know that but I have to tell you that right now you're being a complete idiot.

Sharon looked up at him

Dennis: I think I'm more inclined to believe Faith because right now even you dont believe your story. You need to leave him Sharon because it'll only get worse and you know that, I know you do.

He paused and took a deep breath

Dennis: Sharon if I find out he has hit Faith and she's telling the truth or if he so much as even thinks about hurting any of them I'll file for full custody.
Sharon: You cant do that
Dennis: I can and if it comes to it I will. I dont want this any more than you do but if you cant be responsible enough to notice when your kids are in danger then you dont give me much choice. Call me if you need me.

And with that he was gone. Out of the door and out of sharons life yet again.

Sharon combed out her hair and settled herself infront of the mirror. It was nearly a week since dennis had talked to sharon and the pair were still not talking. To make matters worse Faith hardly ever came out of her room and Alyss was defiantly ignoring her older sister. Tonight Sharon and Neil were going to scarlets. Sharon hadnt wanted to go but she knew what would happen if she said no. Neil had beat her twice more since her discussion with dennis and she still felt as lost and confused as she had then but at least now she knew something. She didnt love Neil, she loved dennis and that was never going to go away. Thinking about her love for him just upset her more because she knew that she could never have him now and even if she could, would he want her?
She pushed the thoughts away and made her best effort to appear cheerful as she put on her make up carefully coving the latest batch of bruises.
There, that would do. Time to face the world.

Brandy: Aww Dennie come on.

She tugged on his arm as she asked him for the millionth time. Dennis ignored her and leaned heavily against the bar, his eyes glancing around. He hadnt wanted to come out tonight but Brandy had and it was easier to agree with her than listen to her sulk. Scarlets wouldnt have been his preferred place either but it was hers and he wasnt about to bother arguing.
His eyes glanced towards the stairs. He caught his breath in a gasp as he sighted Sharon walkinh gracefully down the steps. Her black dress was plain and simple playing hommage to her natural beauty. It was short, falling above the knee but it hugged her figure perfectly in all the right places. Her heeled shoes made her look as though she was walking on air and her hair bobbed slightly as she moved.
Dennis drank in her sight taking in everything from the curves of her legs to the gentle arch of her neck. Her lips looked glossy and kissable and were shaped into an easy smile. Her eyelids drooped over her eyes giving her a naturally seductive look. She looked gorgeous, perfect even but Dennis noticed something to shatter the perfection. Sharon had skillfully tried to mask it with make up and to a passer by it would be invisable but to Dennis it stood out as a stain on her perfect skin and the angry bruise stared back at him from sharons arm with a conviction all of its own.

Sharon walked down the stairs and spotted Dennis imediatly. She saw brandy's arm snake around him and felt an instant pang of jealousy. Then she saw him looking.
She watched carefully as he looked her up and down, and saw with delight that he apparently approved of her dress. She blushed slightly and smiled her first genuine smile in days.
She felt Neils grip on her own arm increase and knew instantly that he had seen the way dennis had looked at her. Sharon rolled her eyes and the rebelious side of her tweeked at her mind. This had gone too far, it was time for payback. She shoved the part of her mind telling her to be careful to the back of her mind and walked over to dennis to greet him.

Dennis saw her coming and tore his eyes away from the bruise.

Sharon: Hi
Dennis: Erm Hi

At that moment Neil appeared behind Sharon and Dennis watched as he placed a possesive grip around Sharons wrist. She flinched at his touch but quickly covered with an almost convincing smile.
Brandy chose that moment to resume her persistent tugging at Dennis's arm until Dennis finally relented to dancing with her.
From the danefloor Dennis watched as Neil and Sharons conversation escalated until Sharon walked away...right into Dennis's direction. She completely ignored Brandy.

Sharon: Dennis will you dance with me?

He looked at her quizically

Dennis: Err sure

He broke of from Brandy and she sauntered off into the crowd. Dennis placed his arms around Sharons waist as the music changed to a slow song. Sharon placed her hands of the back of Dennis's neck, closing the gap betweenthem as their bodies swayed in time to the music.
For a while they just looked at each other, until Dennis broke the silence.

Dennis: I know why you're doing this
Sharon: What?
Dennis: You're trying to make Neil jealous
Sharon: So what if I am?
Dennis: Well for starters I dont like being used
Sharon: Well I dont like being cheated on with some cheep tart from the pub but hey its a cruel world.

Dennis sighed

Dennis: Sharon I dont think its a good idea to make him angry do you?
Sharon: Whats that supposed to mean?

They stopped dancing and stood in the middle of the dancefloor just facing each other.

Dennis: Oh come on you know perfectly well what I mean. How did you get that bruise on your arm
Sharon: I...
Dennis: He hit you again didnt he.

It wasnt a question Dennis knew perfectly well he was stating a fact whether she admitted it of not.

Sharon: Dont be stupid I fell
Dennis: Pull the other one. Why are you with him if he hits you? Whay kind of relationship is that? He doesnt deserve you.
Sharon: What and you do deserve me do you? You dont know a thing about my relationship with him so just shut up. I dont have to listen to this.

With that she turned away from him and headed to the door. Dennis sighed, she was running away from him again. Why could she never face the truth?

Part 28




As Sharon stormed out of the club Dennis saw Neil out of the corner of his eye as he set down his drink and followed her. Dennis knew he should be concerned for her but he was too angry to care.
He couldnt understand why she was finding it so hard to do the right thing. It wasnt just her this was affecting she had the kids to think of too. He wondered how she could be so stupid. She had been through this before she knew how it would all end. She knew it had to end surely she did. He couldnt believe she was in blatent denial.
He sighed and was interupted from his thoughts by the barman who had been concentrating on dennis's fixed frown for the last five minutes.


Barman: And I thought I had problems...
Dennis: Trust me you dont know the half of it
Barman: Woman troubles?
Dennis: Something like that


It wasnt just that though. It wasnt just women troubles and it wasnt just that she was in denial about Neil. He thought he had seen something while they were dancing but it may have just been a trick of the light. He thought he had seen a glimmer of care and love lingering behind her eyes and for that split second everything had be ok. They werent fighting they werent ignoring each other they were just dancing, holding each other and Dennis couldnt help but think that that was how it should be for the rest of their lives.
He sighed again and turned to the barman.


Dennis: 'Nother' whisky please mate
Barman: Havent you had enough...
Dennis: Believe me I havent had nearly enough
Barman: Ok but this is your last one


It took and hour and four whiskeys before his anger had subsided enough for him to attempt to follow her to apologise. He had to say sorry. Somehow he knew that if he went home whilst still on bad terms with her he wouldnt get much sleep. He gave a quick look round for Brandy, figured she'd left already and left the club.
He walked in the direction of the house that Sharon now shared with Neil. He crossed the square slowly, breathing in the calm midnight air. He listened to the way the wind rustled through the autumn leaves that littered the floor. It was then that another sound pierved his subconcious. It was a tiny sound barely audible over the wind own howl. It sounded small and desperate, like that of a fately indured animal.
Dennis looked around. The square was empty. He tried to walk on and willed his feet to move, he had to get to Sharons house, he had to say sorry. But something was stopping him. He was rooted to the spot. Every fibre of his being was willing him towards this noise.
Dennis listened more closely and followed the nois towards a small allyway searching for the source of the now fading cry. When he found what had been making the noise though he imeddiatly wished he hadnt and panic swept through his body.
Oh no this was all his fault!

Part 29


When he found what had been making the noise though he imeddiatly wished he hadnt and panic swept through his body. Oh no this was all his fault!


Dennis coudnt believe what he was seeing. This couldnt be happening. Sharon lay slumped on the floor against the alley wall. Her face was bleeding, her dress was askew and bruises were already appearing on every inch of her body. Her eyes were closed and her cries for help had stopped, she was unconcious.
Dennis rushed to her side, hoping against hopes that he wouldnt be too late. She wasnt moving. He looked at her not daring to touch her and felt the white hot tears ripple down his face in utter desperation.
For what seemed like forever she made no movement and he feared the worst then he heard a tiny sound, similar to the noise he had first heard. He cupped her head in his hands as she strained to open her eyes and part her lips.

Sharon: Dennis...

It was bearly a whisper and then she fainted again. It was enough. Dennis didnt even think twice about his next actions.
Deftly he swept her up into his arms and headed towards his flat. The rain was pelting down and Dennis did his best to keep her dry but without much success.
He fumbled for his keys at the door. It was raining more and more heavily and Dennis knew he had to get her inside as soon as possible.
He pushed open the door and carried her upstairs and into the flat. He placed sharon on the sofa as softly as he could and tried hard not to look at her. He knew that if he was to be any use to her now he had to distance himself from the situation and thta meant not looking at her. That meant not getting upset and not getting angry. He walke dinto the kitchen and when he returned seconds later with a large bowl of warm water and a cloth sharon was starting to stir.
Dennis sat on the edge of the sofa and placed a comforting hand over hers as she groaned in obvious pain.

Dennis: Hey sleepyhead I thought I'd lost you then

Sharon looked at him and smiled weakly before bursting into tears.

Sharon: I'm so sorry

Tears trickled down her face as she sobbed. Dennis, unable to hold back any longer, placed an arm around her and hugged her gently.

Dennis: Hey shhh, you have nothing to be sorry for none of this is your fault. Look, come on lets get you cleaned up, can you sit up?

Very slowly and with Dennis's help Sharon managed to arrange her body into a sitting position before slumping again the sofa in agony. Dennis knelt on the floor beside her and using the water and cloth her had aquired earlier he began to clean the cuts on her arm.
Small gasps of pain escaped from her lips with every touch and Dennis felt another smal tear seep from his eyes and roll down his own cheek. He hastily wiped it away and wondered what had caused it. So many emotions filled his body he felt fit to burst.
He felt sadness and pity for Sharon and embarassment on her behalf after all he was probably the last person she wanted to help her. Mostly he was just angry. Angry at Neil, who Dennis was sure had attacked her, angry at Sharon for not listening to his advice and warning and angry at himself for not being there when she had needed him most. He had failed her again and now he would have to live with that for the rest of his life.

Dennis tried to forget his own self pity and turned his attention back to sharon.

Dennis: Where are the kids?
Sharon: Huh?

Sharon looked at him, dazed, tears still glistening on her cheeks

Dennis: The kids,who's looking after them?
Sharon: Oh err Faith and Alyss are at Ellie's house and Ryan and the twins are stayingthe night with chrissie.
Dennis: Oh ok.

There was an uncomfortable silence. Sharon stared into space trying to distance herself from her pitiful situation

Sharon: They didnt like him you know...

She looked up suddenly but continued to look vague and distanced. It was Dennis's turn to be confused.

Dennis: Huh?
Sharon: Neil. The kids didnt really like him, Faith hated him.

Dennis pricked up his ears, sharon had mentioned Neils name before he'd had too. This was the confirmation he had been looking for.

Dennis: Well I cant say I was his biggest fan and Faith always was a daddy's girl.
Sharon: Yeah and Alyss is polite to everyone whether she likes them or not although I think she liked him the most, she wanted to like him.

Sharon paused as though dwelling on a distant memory.

Sharon: Ryan sulked all the time, he missed his dad and the twins cried if he came anywhere near them.

Sharon gave a small smile.

Sharon: I knew our kids were clever they always were better judges of character than you or I

Dennis smiled back then frowned.

Dennis: Sorry about earlier in the club. I shouldnt have had a go at you like that.
Sharon: Why not? You were right and I didnt listen now look at the mess I'm in.

She started to cry again and Dennis felt the anger well up inside him at the confirmation that it was Neil that had hurt her.

Dennis: Sharon?...did he...?

Dennis paused not sure how best to phrase his question.

Dennis: Did he...It doesnt matter its not important right now

Sharon turned to him with a sence of urgency and despair.

Sharon: No it does matter. Its just I dont think I can do this right now, I dont think I can...I...I

She burst into tears again

Sharon: What happened to us Dennis? How did we end up like this? Where did we go wrong?

There was a long pause before dennis stood up and turned away from her. He once again adopted his formal clinical tone.

Dennis: Come on, you had better get some sleep, you can have the bedroom. I need to go out for a bit, I'll be back soon.

He saw the worried look that flitted across her face at the thought of being alone.

Dennis: Dont worry you're safe here and I wont be long, I promise.

A sense on deja vue hit the pair as they remembered an event that happened nearly eleven years ago:

She stood up and walked to the window leaving dennis sat on the bed.

Dennis: Your not gonna lose me, i promise
Sharon: you said that before remember and you broke my heart.

Dennis shook his head and cleared his thoughts.

Dennis: Well get some sleep I'll be back soon.

He grabbed his coat and turned to the door. Sharon looked at him her eyes pleading,

Sharon: Dennis...

He turned to her

Sharon: Dont do anything stupid

Her voice was small and she seemed afraid again.
He swept from the door and sat next to her. He held her close and stroked her hair and for a moment they both forgot that they were on the verge of a divorce. He cupped her face in his hands and spoke softly.

Dennis: Dont worry I'll try not to do anything too stupid.

She smiled but still looked worried. Dennis brushed a stray hair from her face and had the sudden urge to kiss her bruised lips but resisted temptation and stood up.

Dennis: Rest, I'll be back soon

This time he didnt even give Sharon the chance to reply before he was gone, out of the door, leaving a scared sharon very much alone.

Part 31



Sharon stared at the door after Dennis before letting out a sigh and standing up. She picked the now cold bowl of water up from the floor and carried it and the cloth back into the kitchen. She marvelled at how different it was from the kitchen her and Dennis had decorated together at home and decided that the cold glass units were not Dennis’s choice.
She decided to follow Dennis’s advice and get some rest. She forgot her usual night time rituals and avoided the bathroom. She didn’t relish the thought of seeing her bruises in the mirror and besides the smell of Brandy’s perfume wafting through her nose was not exactly what she needed right now.
She pulled what was left of her dress around herself and pushed open the bedroom door. Immediately she was confronted with an onslaught on her senses. Her nose was filled with the sweet smell of Dennis’s aftershave then the sickly sweet smell of Brandy’s various cosmetics. Her eyes instantly picked out which side of the bed belonged to Dennis. His bedside table played host to an alarm clock, a photo of his children taken last summer and a phone. Brandy’s bedside table however was cluttered with dirty tissues and a large selection of makeup. It was also home to a large mirror; a jewellery box and what seemed to be a half eaten bowl of cornflakes.
Sharon gave a repressed shudder and walked round to Dennis’s side of the bed where she climbed fully clothed onto the top of the bed and lay down. She breathed in heavily and smiled at the strong scent of Dennis floating from the pillow. It wasn’t long before she was fast asleep, her head burrowed into the pillow and a smile on her face. Anyone looking in would have no idea of what she had just been through.

Part 32



Dennis wandered round the square, unsure of what to do. He knew what he wanted to do but he was confused and his close encounter with Sharon had shaken him. He looked at his watch and started the short walk to his old home, where he was sure he would find Neil. He had to pay for what he had done.
Dennis stood outside No.5 Albert Square and stared at the imposing Victorian terrace. The lights weren’t on and it looked as though no one was home. Dennis walked up to the front door and trusting his instincts tried the handle. The door was unlocked and Dennis slipped through it into the house.
He left the light switch untouched and wandered through the house in the dark.
He walked into the empty sitting room and smiled with familiarity. He had so many memories in this room. He looked at the now fading mark of wax crayon on the wall behind the large blue arm chair. He remembered how he had caught Faith drawing it on the walls one afternoon. He remembered clear as day how he had found his three year old daughter scribbling frantically on the wall. He remembered the look of innocence on her face as he had told her off and the tears that sprang to her eyes when she had realised he was mad. He smiled again and walked out into the kitchen.
Immediately he frowned at the way the kitchen had changed. The stainless steel worktops and units seemed so clinical, so cold, so unlike Sharon. Dennis concluded that they had not been her choice. He left the room and continued his search by climbing the stairs.
He walked into the room that Ryan shared with Lilly and Toby. He brushed his fingers over the cots and remembered how surprised he had been when Sharon had told him she was pregnant again and with twins. He remembered how he had left the house and not come back till the early hours of the morning. He remembered how he wasn’t there for her. He should have been there for her.
Dennis travelled onto the landing and stepped into Faith and Alyss’s room. Moonlight streamed through a slit in the curtains creating an unearthly glow on the floor He remembered with despair how he had once come home to find his wife and children gone and Sharon’s blood soaked into the floorboards of this room. He remembered how even after weeks of scrubbing the blood wouldn’t fully come out and in the end they had covered the stain with a fresh new carpet.
Suddenly the light flicked on and Dennis whipped round coming face to face with Neil.

Neil: Wha you doin in ere?

Even from that distance Dennis could clearly smell the deep stench of alcohol on his breath.

Neil: If your looking for Sharon she aint ere.
Dennis: That why I’m here
Neil: Huh

Dennis lost his temper and snapped putting all of his anger into one swift move. He punched Neil clean in the face before grabbing his throat and pushing him up against the wall.

Dennis: Now listen to me you scum bag, if you think about even going near my family again then I will personally see to it that you have to eat through a straw for the rest of your life and that’s if you’re lucky.

Neil pushed Dennis away and threw a punch. Dennis moved to dodge it but he wasn’t quick enough and Neil clipped him on the chin causing his lip to bleed.

Neil: Don’t you get it Dennis, they aint your family anymore. She left you remember.
Dennis: Why you...

There was a bang as the bedroom door opened and a flustered Chrissie walked in with Jake stood not far behind her.

Chrissie: What exactly is going on here?

Neil stared at her in disbelief as Dennis wiped the blood from his mouth.

Neil: More to the point what the ******* are you doing here.

Chrissie looked him directly in the eye.

Chrissie: I wondered why Sharon hadn’t rang to say goodnight to the kids and then I heard noises which I guess was you two.

She frowned and looked at Dennis for the first time

Chrissie: You ok?
Dennis: I’m fine. If you two are here who’s looking after the kids

This time it was Jake who answered

Jake: Pauline’s watching them; we figured we’d only be five minutes. We didn’t exactly expect to find world war three in two little girls’ room.

Dennis looked at Neil

Chrissie: Come on Dennis you better come back with us.
Dennis: I can’t; I have to get back to...

He didn’t even want to say Sharon’s name in front of Him.

Chrissie: Dennis, whatever it is it can wait now come on lets get that cut seen to and you can see the kids quick.

Chrissie turned to leave and Dennis had no choice but to follow but not before staring harshly at Neil.

Dennis nervously rubbed his hands. He was stood in the Vic kitchen, leaning against the worktop and sipping the coffee that Chrissie had forced into his hands but three seconds earlier. She was sat at the table drinking a cup of tea and Jake had settled the kids down for the night.

Dennis: Will this take much longer Chrissie I really have to go.

Chrissie looked at him.

Chrissie: You know that must be the fourth time you’ve said that since you got her. What could possibly be so important that you have to rush of like that?

Dennis looked at the floor. He couldn’t tell her what had happened, could he?

Dennis: Its Sharon, she’s at my place.
Chrissie: Oh so that’s what this is all about, well I’m sure she can wait half an hour.
Dennis: No Chrissie you don’t understand
Chrissie: Then maybe you could explain it to me, all of it. Like what Sharon’s doing at your flat when you’ve filed for divorce and what you were doing trying to grind Neil Harcroft to a pulp at gone midnight.

Dennis looked at her.

Dennis: Chrissie? How do you know Neil?

Chrissie looked away

Chrissie: It’s a long story
Dennis: Look Chrissie I need to know
Chrissie: There’s nothing to know
Dennis: Look Chrissie this is important, you didn’t want Sharon to see him. Why?
Chrissie: I just don’t think they’re well suited that’s all

Dennis sighed, she was lying and he needed the truth, he didn’t have a choice anymore, his hands were tied. She had to know.

Dennis: He attacked her Chrissie

Chrissie whipped her head round to face him.

Chrissie: What?
Dennis: He attacked her in an alleyway. They were walking home from the club and he attacked her. He raped her and then he beat her until she was half dead. That’s why she’s at my place, I found her. I took her home and I cleaned her cuts and I wiped her tears and then I went out with every intention of beating the living daylights out of him.

Chrissie sat silent

Dennis: Its not the first time it’s happened either, I know he hits her and Faith said he went to hit her too. I’m scared for them Chrissie. I’m scared for Sharon and I’m scared for my children. I need to know what I’m dealing with here. Please Chrissie, just tell me.

Chrissie looked at him, traces of tears coating her eyes.

Chrissie: Ok, you'd better sit down for this.

Part 34


Sharon woke up groggily, her head throbbing. For a moment everything was ok. Her body felt fine, she couldn’t remember what had happened and she didn’t know where she was or why. Then she remembered, she remembered Neil and what he had done and she remembered how sweet Dennis had been. The pain set in too, she had bruises in places she didn’t know existed and felt sick in her stomach.
She sat up straight and remembered where she was. She was in Dennis’s flat; she was in Dennis’s bed. Despite her current situation she couldn’t keep the grin of her face at the thought of being in his bed again. Then she sighed heavily when she realised he still wasn’t back. She wondered how long she had been asleep and climbed out of bed, stumbling to the light switch. She squeezed her eyes tight shut as she flicked the switch and the bright artificial light pierced her eyes making them sting and her head throb even more. She walked over to the bedside table, her injuries causing her to move as slowly as possible. She grabbed the alarm clock and carefully deciphered the time. It was nearly 01:00am.
She sighed heavily and rubbed her temples. Where was Dennis? He should have been back before now. She wasn’t stupid she knew where he had gone and when he’d left he’d had that look in his eye. The one that usually means something bad’s about to happen.
She walked into the front room and then wandered through to the kitchen where she took a glass from the cupboard and got herself a drink of water from the cold tap. She cursed as she let her concentration slip and the water spilled over the side of the glass stinging at a cut on her hand. It was then Sharon realised how terrible she must look.
She was still wearing her dress from the night before but it was torn from the hem to the top of her thigh showing a gash across the top of her leg. Her legs were covered in blood and bruises and a series of scrapes ran the length of her arms. She could also feel an oval shaped bruise tugging at her side, the result of Neil’s boot hitting her ribs as he kicked her repeatedly. She’d split her lip and scraped her face on the pavement. Her hands were sore and gravel was imbedded under her fingernails. All in all she wasn’t looking too great.

?: You need a serious bath or something love cos that aint a great look for you

Sharon span round, so shocked that she dropped her glass into the sink, the water trickling quickly out of it.

Sharon: Bandy?
Brandy: Yeah what the hell are you doin ere?
Sharon: Err

How could she explain to Dennis's girlfriend and live in lover that dennis had saved her and was now probably being beaten to a pulp by her attacker.

Sharon: I...Dennis...he...

Sharon couldnt help but stutter. Her nerves were shot to pieces and every noise she heard still scared her witless. He head throbbed even harder and she placed a cool hand on her forehead.
Brandy seemed to completly miss sharons stutter and jump to the most important word: Dennis.

Brandy: Dennis, is he here? Where is he?

Sharon twiddled with what was left of her dress and wrapped her arms around herself.

Sharon: He went out
Brandy: He went out and left you here? Alone? In our flat?

Sharon realised that brandy was one of these people you had to talk to very slowly and with few words.

Sharon: Yes he did, is there a problem?

Brandy frowned hard.

Brandy: Why would he go and not tell me and why would he let you stay?
Sharon: I dont know maybe he thought you werent coming back
Brandy: Where would he get that idea?
Sharon: Err you did leave him at the club

Sharons patience was waring thin, she really wast in the mood for this.

Brandy: And...

Sharon snapped

Sharon: Oh I dont know brandy maybe you werent the first thing on his mind when he left
Brandy: What? Of course I was why would I not be

Sharon couldnt help but giggle a little but stopped when it caused her sides to ache. Then she was overcome by a deep feeling of regret. Oh no, what had she done! She hadnt meant to do that. She'd just lost Dennis his girlfriend. He could have really cared about Brandy.
Hey wait a minute, she didnt really believe that. Did she? Either way Sharon just hoped Dennis was ok and that he wouldnt be too mad

Dennis sat in the chair opposite Chrissie who took a deep breath and gripped her mug until her knuckles turned white.

Chrissie: It all seems like so long ago...

She paused for what seemed like forever and Dennis began to think she wasn’t going to tell him after all. He leant forward to prompt her.

Chrissie: It was more than twenty years ago when I first met Neil. He was sweet, charming, he was dating my best friend.

Chrissie gave an ironic little laugh.

Chrissie: He tried it on with me, at her birthday party of all places; he’s always been a jerk. Anyway I told him where to go and he didn’t take kindly to that. He told me if I ever told anyone about this he make my life hell but I’m not exactly the kind of person that scares easy am I now.

She smiled weakly.

Dennis: Let me guess, you told your friend.
Chrissie: Yeah but of course she didn’t believe me, he turned her against me, they told everyone that I cared about that I was a boyfriend stealing b***h. Everyone hated me, I had to move away in the end, that’s when I met my first husband. I didn’t see Neil for ages after that. I left my husband and moved to Spain.

She stopped and sipped her tea.

Chrissie: Then I bumped into an old mate one day in the club I was working in.
Dennis: Your best friend, Neil’s girlfriend?
Chrissie: Yeah except they weren’t together anymore.

She put her head in her hands and Dennis was gripped by a new sense of urgency.

Dennis: Chrissie, why weren’t they together, what did he do?

Chrissie looked at him.

Chrissie: She was in Spain getting over the court case. Neil had been accused of murder.
Dennis: Murder!
Chrissie: Yeah him and my friend had had a kid, a little girl. My friend had come upstairs one day to find him pushing a pillow into the cot. The baby was dead, she was only six months old.

Tears were running down her face and Dennis was in disbelief.

Chrissie: He got away with it
Dennis: What!!?
Chrissie: He claimed the baby was dead when he found it and the coroner couldn’t determine cause of death. They couldn’t prove it.

Chrissie and Dennis both looked down into their mugs.

Dennis: That still doesn’t explain why you didn’t say any of this before now, what does he have on you?

Chrissie looked at him.

Chrissie: He knows
Dennis: Knows what?
Chrissie: A few years after her baby died my friend came back to England and Neil twisted her round his little finger, he manipulated her into thinking he was innocent. She took him back.

She paused again.

Chrissie: He was still with her till fairly recently actually, they had another kid, Katie.
Dennis: Katie is Amanda's kid?
Chrissie: Yeah but it wasn’t enough, she left him before he put her in a coma. The problem for me is she didn’t leave him early enough.

Dennis looked at her.

Chrissie: My friend, it was Amanda Dennis, my solicitor. She shared everything with him and I foolishly shared everything with her. He knows about Den. He knows I killed Den and he’s threatened to tell everyone. He’s threatened to tell my kids.

Tears streamed down her face and Jake, who had been listening from the doorway, entered the room and held her tight

Jake: Hey shhh, he wouldnt dare
Chrissie: You dont know this guy, he would trust me
Dennis: But they cant prove it was you and Sams already been sent down for it, she's 9 years into her sentence for christ sake no self respecting judge is gonna open this case up again.
Jake: Dennis is right, you need to calm down.

Dennis looked at Chrissie and instantly felt sorry for her.

Dennis: Look I really have to make sure Sharons ok, with you be alright
Jake: We'll be fine, thanks Dennis
Chrissie: Give her my love
Dennis: I will

Dennis stepped to walk out of the door but not before one last look at chrissies tearstained face.

Dennis pushed the door open as quietly as he could but it was all to no avail, Sharon was still awake and sat puffy eyed one the sofa.

Dennis: Its gone 2 in the morning. What are you still doing up?
Sharon: Ask your phsycotic girlfriend
Dennis: Brandy, she was here?
Sharon: Yeah only I doubt she'll be coming back apparently you're dumped, sorry.

The apology seemed lame even in her head but Sharon had said it anyway. Dennis didnt seem to even register what she had said, that or he just didnt care.

Dennis: Are you ok?
Sharon: More to the point are you ok, what happened? That looks like a nasty cut.

Dennis raised his hand to the cut on his forehead, with her story Chrissie had completely foregotten about cleaning it.

Sharon: Wait there I'll get some water.

Before he could protest he was forced into a sudden role reversal as she staggered of, wincing against the pain, and gathered together a cloth and warm water before setting herself back down on the sofa to nurse his injuries.

Sharon: Now tell me what happened.

For a moment Dennis considered refusing to tell her anything before he realised she needed to know.

Dennis: Well I went back to the house and I had it out with Neil, he was pretty wasted by the time I got there, but before I could do some real damage to the scumbag we were interupted. By Chrissie.

Sharon looked up at him and placed the cloth back in the bowl, the small droplets of blood staining the water with a pink hue.

Sharon: Chrissie?
Dennis: Yeah. Anyway she took me back to hers and she was gonna clean me up but...
Sharon: Yes...
Dennis: Have you ever noticed how Chrissie seems to pretty much hate Neils guts?
Sharon: I just figured she was being protective.
Dennis: She was and with good cause. Chrissie knew Neil from before, he was married to her best friend. He knocked her from pillar to post but the thing that did it in the end was that, well they had a baby. He killed her Sharon, he killed a tiny baby with his bare hands and the only reason he isnt in prison is because of some mix up with evidence.

Sharon didnt need to know what to say but two large tears rolled down her cheeks.

Sharon: Why didnt Chrissie tell me all this?
Dennis: Because Neil knows about Den, he kows what Chrissie did. Neils married to Amanda, Amanda, Chrissies solicitor.

Realisation seemed to dawn on Sharon as she wiped her eyes and resumed cleaning the cut above Dennis's eye. He placed a hand on her arm, she flinched before relaxing and smiling warmly at him.

Dennis: Its going to be ok you know, he cant hurt you anymore and I'm going to take care of you until you're better.

She leant forward to check the cut was clean in better light.

Sharon: And what about after I'm better, what then?

She looked at him. They were so close. Just inches apart.
Dennis placed a tentive hand on her cheek and stroked her face gently.

Dennis: I'll always look after you

He smiled.

Dennis: Even when you dont want me to. I'm not going anywhere, I promise...I...I love you.

He edged closer to her face and looked into her eyes. They were wet from crying but to him still shone with the brilliance of a million stars.
He gently let his lips brush against hers, light as a feather, she could hardly feel them. She responded to the kiss, welcoming it with all her heart. She dropped the cloth and bowl and let the water spill out onto the floor as she wound her hands up into the softness of his hair. He deepened the kiss then remembering the nights events, pulled back before anything more happened.
He could see the sad look of confusion scattered on her face. He smiled and took hold of her hands, kissing each bruised finger with the same tender consideration he had shown her lips before he once again brushed across her face with the back of his hand.

Dennis: I really do love you.

She opened her lips with eagerness to return the sentiment but dennis silenced her with his finger on her lips.

Dennis: I love you but this is going to take time. You need to rest and we'll decide what to do about everything else in the morning ok?

He mentally pleaded with her not to take this as a rejection. He really couldnt bear to break her heart again. To his relief she gave a small smile.

Sharon: Ok

Dennis stood up with every intention of sending her to bed and making up the sofa bed for himself. He turned back to her.

Dennis: After tonight, and after what I've done to you, I wouldnt be surprised if you never let any man near you again especially me.

She looked at him and heard the sadness and regret in his voice.

Sharon: But you're not any man are you Dennis, you're my husband and you're mine. Dont leave me please, come to bed, just hold me, I dont want to be alone.

Dennis looked at her and melted.

And so thats what happened. Sharon snuggled down into the covers for a well deserved sleep while Dennis lay atop the covers fully dressed holding her tight and praying that nothing would ever hurt her like this again

Hi its me again really sorry for the delay if the thing about Faith and Ellies mum is confusing just ask and I will explain better





Part 37




Faith tugged at her shoe in frustration as she struggled to calm her breathing and settle her temper. She was sat in Ellies room alone and angry. She had had another fight with Alyss. In the end Ellies mum had to separate them and Ellie had of course taken Alyss's side.
Faith didnt much care for Ellie. She was in her class at school but that was about all they had in common. Ellie was eight months older, had spent half her like in foster care and was quiet and mousy...everything Faith wasnt. Faith didnt mind her mum though and Ellies mum Erin had something of a soft spot for Faith. After all its hard to go through the most terrifying twenty four hours of your life and not like the person you shared it with.
Faith doubted Erin would ever tell Ellie that her father had been the one that caused the scar on Faiths chest by nearly killing her or whether she would ever find out that it was her new stepdad Pete that had shot her father dead in self defence some six years ago. No Faith strongly suspected that Ellie knew nothing what so ever about her father.
Faith shook her head to clear it of the painful memories that still haunted her day and night. The door opened and in walked Alyss and Ellie. They were both giggling and had obviously been talking about Faith.
Faith stood up, grabbed her bag and headed for the door.


Alyss: Where do you think you're going?
Faith: Home
Alyss: But you cant, mums coming for us later
Faith: I dont care I'm going now. I cant spend one more minute with you.
Alyss: Oh Faith stop being so stupid!


Alyss spat the words with venom Faith had never seen from her before.


Faith: oh its me who's stupid is it because I was under the impression that you were the two bit numbskull who believed the work of a pathetic woman beater over that of her own sister.
Alyss: I dont believe you Faith its as simple as that
Faith: What about all the times I helped you out, protected you, trusted you. What have you ever done for me? I ask you this one thing to believe me and you throw it in my face
Alyss: I saved your life if you remember correctly.
Faith: Oh I wondered how long it would take you to throw that back in my face. Its only taken you six years Alyss, kinda slow aren't you.
Alyss: I still saved your life.
Faith: No you didnt, you were three, you had no say in it at all. Mum and dad saved my life when they signed the consent forms all you had to do was go for one very long nap Alyss so dont come the hero.


Alyss folded her arms and tightened her lips and Faith could feel her anger flooding back as the colour rose in her face.


Ellie: Err excuse me but when did she save your life.


The sisters looked round and blinked at the girl who's eyes were round like saucers at the possibility of some excitingly heroic tale


Faith: Oh forget it! I'm off


No one could stop her, before Ellie even had chance to tell her mum Faith was gone, out the door and down the street taking the familiar route home.


Ellie: Should I get my mum?
Alyss: Nah she knows her way home, she can walk its her own fault. Come on I thought you were going to show me your new game.


Within ten minutes the two girls were immersed in the computer game and Faith was soon forgotten.

Sharon woke with a start and began to slowly take in the events of the night before. Her body still ached but the throbbing in her head had gone down and she felt better in herself but then maybe that was because dennis had his arm wrapped around her as if he would never let go.
She shuffled round on the bed to face him, his arms still locked tightly around her. She watched him as he slept and listened to the harmonic sound of his soft breathing. She knew for a fact he had waited until he knew she was asleep and ok before going to sleep himself.
She let her hand gently sweep across his face and smiled lovingly as his eyes fluttered open and at the sight of her his lips curved into a happy grin.

Sharon: Goodmorning
Dennis: Morning, how are you? Are you ok?

Sharon gave a contented giggle at his concern.

Sharon: I'll be fine
Dennis: Good

He smiled again and hesitantly kissed her on lips.

Sharon: I'm not a doll Dennis, you wont break me.

He smiled at her comment and hugged her again

Dennis: I know but its going to take time to get over this, for both of us.

She nodded knowing he was right and wound her arms around his waist

Dennis: And its ok because we have all the time in the world, I'm never letting you go again.
Sharon: Err thats all well and good but I need to use the bathroom

The pair laughed and dennis reluctantly let her go

Dennis: Hey, look you need to rest still why dont I go get the kids and bring them back here then we'll think about going home tomorrow ok.

Sharon frowned at the prospect of spending one more night in the flat rather than the home she loved so much but yet again she knew dennis was right and it was just one night right?

Sharon: Ok but dont be long and ring me if anything happens
Dennis: Nothing will happen
Sharon: But something always does. It never rains but it pours isnt that the saying well it very much applies to our family.
Dennis: It'll be fine, I'll go get Faith and Alyss from Erins house then I'll drop by chrissies to get Ryan and the twins K?
Sharon: Ok just be carefull ok and bring our kids back in one peice if you can.
Dennis: I will I promise now dont worry.

He kissed her lips to seal the deal, quickly dressed and headed out the door and towards the car to collect his children

Faith frowned as she climbed the steps to her home. The door was ajar and the curtains were tight shut. Something wasnt right. She pushed open the door and stepped into the dark hallway, dropping her bag at the front door. She was completely alone. Where was everyone?
Faith walked further into the hallway, stutting the front door behind her with a bang. She flicked the light on and called for her mother at the bottom of the stairs in a sing song voice.

Faith: MUM...MUM!

No reply

Faith: ALYSS ARE YOU HERE?

Still no reply

Faith: DAD?

Suddenly she felt movement behind her and before she had chance to turn a hand was clamped across her mouth as and arm grabbed around her middle.

?:No one her angel, its just me and you so you can scream all you like for me but we wouldnt want to disturb the neighbours would we...now shut up before your stupid little mouth gets you into trouble and I do something I might regret.

Faith sat calmly, althoguh everynow and again a distinst look of irritation flashed across her face. He hands and feet were bound with thick rope and her captor, a rather crazy Neil had tied her to the radiator in the living room. She looked at him as he swaggered into the room. Gos how she hated him.

Faith: You wont get away with this
Neil: Get away with what?
Faith: Holding me hostage like this.

Neil laughed and Faith faltered

Neil: You think everythings about you dont you Faithy.
Faith: No actually I dont and dont call me Faithy
Neil: Why what you gonna do about it?
Faith: I...
Neil: Nothing thats what there's nothing you can do cos I'm Neil Harrington and you're just a little pipsqueek with an attitude problem. So theres nothing you can do about it k' Faithy?
Faith: Its Faith Angela actually. God I thought you'd at least have learnt my name by now. You really are stupid.

Faith smiled as she saw the anger flicker across his face and knew that she had won round one of their little arguament. She just had to keep him talking.

Neil: Why you little...
Faith: I'm nearly eleven Neil hardly little. I'm not a baby
Neil: You act like it
Faith: Look who's talking

Neil paced the room before dragging a stool from the corner, placing it in the middle of the room and sitting down to face Faith.

Faith: Look what do you want because I'm starting to get a little impatient.

Neil stared at her with utter hatred.

Neil: I want your mum back
Faith: And you think kidnapping her daughter will do that.

Faith snorted in a mocking sort of way.

Neil: It will work.
Faith: Why has she left you anyway

Faith: It doesnt matter it'll never work and then you'll get sent to prison, people dont mess with our family

Neil scoffed at Faiths misplaced confidence

Neil: Ahh you see it will work cos if your mum doesnt come back then I slit your little throat.

Neil puller a thick carving knife around 8 inches long from beneath his jacket. Faith blinked in slight fear but quickly regained her composure.

Faith: You cant scare me, it doesnt work. Dave Dalton tried that and he ended up with a bullet in his head.
Neil: Yeah and if I heard right from your mum you ended up with a bullet in your chest. You nearly died
Faith: Yeah but I didnt die did I
Neil: Shame...
Faith: Yeah it is cos if I were dead I wouldnt have to listen to this crap would I.

Neil narrowed his eyes and fingered the edge of the knife

Dennis strolled up to Erins front door with a smile on his face and a spring in his step. He'd done it. He'd gotten his family back and he didnt think he'd ever been happier.
He knocked at the door and a cheerful Erin opened the door to his and led him into the living room. Dennis having not seen Erin for some months noticed some obvious changes in Erin. Presumably from her relationship with Pete and the reconciliation with her daughter.
Her brown eyes looked young andher hair shone with new vibrance but the mst obvious change was the rounding bump protruding from her stomach.

Dennis: Wow you look great when did that happen?

He gestured to the bump.

Erin: I'm seven months gone. Its a boy, I cant wait.
Dennis: I bet pete's happy
Erin: Pleased as puch. I'll go get the girls

Erin walked to the bottom of the stairs and shouted up.

Erin: FAITH!! ALYSS!! YOUR DADS HERE!

Ellie and Alyss quickly came into the room with sheepish looks on their faces.

Alyss: Dad what are you doing her? I thought mum was getting me.
Dennis: She was but she asked me to come instead. Where's your sister?

Alyss looked at her feet

Dennis: Ally?
Alyss: I couldnt stop her dad I told her not to but you know what stupid Faiths like she just went.
Dennis: Hey slow down, went where?
Alyss: Home. She walked home about and hour ago
Erin: What I didnt even hear the door

Dennis studied his daughters face

Dennis: Home? are you sure Alyss?
Alyss: Possitive why?

Blind panic surged through Dennis as he headed to the door.

Dennis: I cant explain now ok. Erin I need you to take care of Alyss for a bit ok and call Sharon for me. There's somewhere I have to be...

Hi its me again this is part 40 I cant believe it. When I wrote keeping it in the family I said it would be shorter that keeping the faith which had 30 parts, and it wasnt, it was 10 parts longer and when I started this I said it would only be about 15 parts and its going to be about 45 making it longer than keeping it oin the family lol. Just a short part I will try post another part later too

Dennis couldnt think straight. He ran to the car and set off without even stopping to put on his seat belt.
He stopped at the traffic lights and tapped his finger impatiently on the steering wheel.


Dennis: Come on, come on come on


This wasnt happening. Why couldnt anything ever be simple, ever be safe. If Faith had gone back tot he house alone Neil could have still been there. What if he'd hurt her? Even if he wasnt there anything could have happened to her. Dennis put his foot down and quickly navigated the short distance between erins house and the place he used to call home.
He got out of the car and walked up the steps to the house. The door was open...

Faith couldnt help but smile. She had found a brand new way to irritate Neil. Apparently he was too keen of humming or singing and so after five rounds of 'I'm a little tea pot' Faith had moved on to 'wheels on the bus'

Faith: The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round, the wheels on the bus go round and round, all day long.

She paused for effect as Neil groaned before taking and deep breath and continuing.

Faith: The wipers on the bus go swish swash swish, swish swash swish, swish swash swish, the wipers on the bus go...
Neil: FOR GOD'S SAKE SHUT UP! SHUT UP, SHUT UP, SHUT UP,!

Faith grinned profusely. This was going to be easy

Thanks thats one of the nicest things anyone has ever said about my writing. I dont want to finsh it either, it sounds wierd but I'm really gonna miss Faith after all she was my creation I'm kind of attatched to her but all good things must come to an end and dont worry I will be back with a new script before you know it, although I have some old projects to finish first.


Part 41




Dennis walked into the darkened hallway. He looked down and saw Faith's overnight bag slumped by the doorway, her old brown bear poking its head out of the top. She'd been here.
Dennis didnt move. He found an unfamiliar feeling washing over him, he was afraid. Afraid for so many reasons and yet afraid for no reasons at all. He was afraid for Faith, she could be hurt or worse. She could be trapped and alone. Anyone could have taken her, Neil could have taken her. And then yet again she could be fine. She could be upstairs playing with her toys or fast asleep on her bed. The only problem was Dennis was too scared to find out.
He was afraid that if anything had happened he would lose Sharon all over again. He let her down before and he nearly lost her for good. He couldnt do that again. He vividly remembered the look on her face when he had told her that Faith had been shot all those years ago. She had looked so betrayed and he'd been forced to watch as her face crumpled from joy at seeing him to disbelief that he had let her down and her daughter was hurt.

Dennis: Sharon go! Its me he wants I'll make sure she's ok I promise!

....

He'd promised to keep Faith safe and he hadnt. He didnt know if she was safe now. He was too afraid to find out and most of all he was afraid that by standing there worrying it was all ready too late. He was scared there was nothing he could do. He was scared he had failed himself.
Dennis shook his head and brought up his defences, he needed to be strong, focussed. It was at that moment he heard the distinct sound of singing. He looked up and headed towards the living room, his heart in his throat with anticipation.

Faith: The wipers on the bus go swish swash swish, swish swash swish, swish swash swish, the wipers on the bus go...
Neil: FOR GOD'S SAKE SHUT UP! SHUT UP, SHUT UP, SHUT UP,!

Faith stopped, an innocent look etched on her face before the room door slowly crept open and Dennis walked through the door.
Faith almost felt dizzy as a rush of hope flew through her body. He was here, he would save he, just like before, just like always.
Dennis's first words were of concern for his daughter.

Dennis: Faith sweetie are you ok?

Faith gave him a pretty smile.

Faith: Yeah dad I'm ok but I want to go home
Dennis: We will sweetie, we will

Dennis looked to Neil who had kicked his chair away and stepped closer to Faith, the knife held high infront of him.

Neil: Dont come any closer
Dennis: Let her go

Neil laughed, he actually laughed.

Neil: You dont honestly think thats gonna work do you. Dont be stupid I really expected more from you Dennis.
Faith: Who you calling stupid, stupid.

Neil rounded on Faith, half turning to her.

Neil: Shut up or you know what'll happen to you.

He drew alone across his kneck to illistrate his point before turning back to Dennis.

Neil: Its over Rickman. I win, I get Sharon, you lose the kids and best of all I get to do this.

Neil surged foreward and through the fit of panic and confusing Dennis felt a sharp pain at his side before slipping to the floor, his head spinning, his heart slowing and blood seeping into the carpet...

Part 42


Sharon fidgeted on the sofa, she just couldnt sit still. She had finally taken of the tatters of the dress she had worn the previous evening and had replaced it with a pair of Dennis's jeans and a t-shirt three sizes too big for her. She pulled cautiously at the sleeves of the top trying to cover her bruises and the bite mark at the top of her arm.
She was starting to worry. Dennis should have been back by now or he should at least have called. As if by magic at that moment the phone rang. Sharon jumped up and rushed to the phone as fast as he aching body would allow he, yanking it of the stand and pressing it to her ear.

Sharon: Dennis?
Erin: No its me, Erin
Sharon: Oh hi

Sharon couldnt hide the dissapointment in her voice

Erin: Look Sharon its about Dennis...and Faith
Sharon: Faith?...Oh my god whats happened?
Erin: faith left my house about an hour ago, I didnt even know she was gone until Dennis turned up. According to Alyss she was going back home. When Dennis heard this he rushed straight out the door. Whats going on?

Sharons mind went blank

Sharon: Oh no

The phone slipped from her hand and landed on the sleek laminate with a neat thud. Sharon squashed a pair of what she assumed to be Brandy's trainers onto her feet and raced out of the door.
She hailed the first cab she could see and pointed it in the direction of her home.

Faiths scream rang in her ears long after Dennis had fallen to the floor. He groaned in pain and held his hand tightly to his side to stop the blood that was pouring from his body. Neil laughed and repeatedly kicked him as he lay on the floor.
At the sight of her father, helpless and bleeding Faith felt a wetness on her cheeks as tears slipped from her hazel eyes.

Faith: Dad? Dad speak to me dad

She didnt know what to do. She could even reach him. She tugged at her restraints but it was useless. She sobbed as Neils laughter continued to fill the otherwise empty house.

Faith: Dad you cant do this. This isnt how it works remember, its you who saves me.

She tried to stay possitive but Dennis meerly gave a weak smiling before falling unconsious.
Neil stopped laughing and smiled before turning to faith, still wielding the knife that now dripped with her fathers blood.

Neil: You wanna play games Faithy?

She was too upset to answer

Neil: I'd shut up if I were you because you're next

This only made her cry harder. Neil stepped towards her and knelt down, bringing himself to her level as she sat crying on the floor. She was a hostage, bound and afraid. She couldnt move and no one could hear her pleas for help. She was alone, an easy kill. Neil lifted the knife an evil glint in his eye. Then suddenly he was distracted by movement behind him.

Sharon: Get away from my daughter.

Part 43




Sharon: Get away from my daughter.


Faith looked up and saw a blurred image of her mother through her tears. Sharon was knelt next to Dennis, shaking him awake until he finally stirred to say a groggy hello.

Dennis: Sharon?
Sharon: Hey baby, lie still alright. You'll be ok just lie still for me.

Dennis didnt reply her just closed his eyes and conserved his energy.
Faith tried to wipe her eyes on her shoulder to look up at her mother.

Faith: Mummy
Sharon: Its ok sweetheart we're getting out of here.

It was then that Neil seemed to snap out of it, stepping infront of Sharon, the knife still firmly in his hand. He had that crude smile on his face again as though sharing a dirty joke that only he could hear.

Neil: Oh no you aint. Your not going anywhere.

Sharon stared Neil directly in the face, apparently unerved by the fact that he was willing to do anything to get what he wanted.

Neil: What are you doing here anyway? I thought it would have taken you at least a couple more hours to show up.

Sharon didnt answer but her defenses slipped and she took half a step backwards, away from Neil and towards the door. The smile on Neils face grew.

Neil: Scared?
Sharon: I'm not afraid of you, not anymore
Neil: We can soon fix that
Sharon: I mean it Neil, if you hurt my children and my husband then I have nothing else to lose. You dont scare me.

Neil seemed both surprised and mildly amused by this but seemed to have a plan none the less.

Neil: You might no be afraid of me but you are afraid of what I could do.

He walked over to Faith who started to shake slightly but maintained a cool facade up until the point when Neil played the knife at the edge of her throat. Sharon stepped forward and Neil touched Faiths skin with the knife, stopping her dead in her tracks.
Faith felt as the knife dug into her kneck and whimpered as droplets of blood trickled onto her jumper. He was really going to do it. He was going to kill her.

Alyss's knuckles turned white as she squeezed her hands into tiny fists. She was sat in the front room at Erins house and felt awful. Something had obviously happened and there was nothing she could do, it was all her fault. If only she'd stopped Faith, if only she'd told Ellie's mum when she'd left, if only, if only.
Ellie and her mum were sat on the sofa opposite. Ellie looked bored and irritated that her playmate had suddenly become silent and was no longer very fun. Erins eyes were full of concern for the child she had known since she had been a toddler.

Erin: I'm going to make some tea and you girls can have some juice and a bit of cake, that'll be nice wont it. Come on Ellie you can help me
Ellie: What why do I have to...

Ellie was quickly silenced by the look her mother gave her and the message got through. They should leave Alyss alone for a bit.
The pair left the room and Alyss jerked her head up. This was her chance, probably her only chance. Quick as a flash Alyss stood up and rushed to the door, slipping out of it and running down the street. She was gone before Erin had even flicked the kettle on.

Part 44



Alyss ran three blocks in the opposite direction of her home before diving into a public phonebox. For a moment she just stood trying hard to slow her breathing as she panted from her running. She then picked up the phone, feeling the cold metal against her palm and the familiar surprise at its weight.
She dug in her pocket and pulled out a shining fifty pence piece, shoving it into the appropriate slot and thinking hard to remember the number before stabbing at the metal buttons and praying for someone to answer.

Alyss: Come on, pick up pick up

She flooded with relief as she heard the little click as the phone was answered.

Chrissie: Hello?
Alyss: Auntie Chrissie?
Chrissie: Alyss?
Alyss: Yeah its me look I need your help. Its all gone wrong, Faith left and dad went home to get her and I dont know where mum is and its all my fault and I should have stopped her and I want to go home and I ran away from Ellies and I hope her mum isnt mad and thats why I'm ringing you, I need your help.

Alyss halted her garbled explanation and started to cry.

Chrissie: Hey its ok Alyss why dont you just start from the beginning and tell me slowly whats happened.
Alyss: Well me and Faith were at our friend Ellies house and we argued so Faith went home by herself, only she didnt tell Ellies mum and I was mad so I didnt either. Then earlier dad came to pick me up which I thought was odd cos mum was supposed to be coming to get us.
Chrissie: Yeah well your mum isnt very well at the minute so thats probably why she sent your dad.

Chrissie thought that telling a nine year old child over the phone that her mother had been raped probably wasnt a good idea.

Alyss: Anyway when he found out what happened he ran off to find Faith and when I overheard Ellies mum talking on the phone to my mum, my mum sounded really wierd and then the phonejust went dead. So when Ellie and her mum left me alone I ran away and now I'm talking to you

Chrissie twiddled with the phone cable and ran it through her fingers as she watched her children James and Hannah playing on the rug with Ryan, Lilly and Toby before deciding what to do.

Chrissie: Ok sweetie its alright, where are you?

Alyss looked around and spotted a street sign.

Alyss: I'm in the phonebox on Albian Street, opposite the dog and duck pub.
Chrissie: Right I know where you are. Ok dont move. I'll send Jake to get you and I'll phone your mum to find out whats happenning ok?
Alyss: Thanks auntie Chrissie.

Alyss put the phone down and collected her twenty pence chance from the shoot at the bottom of the phone. On the other side of town chrissie put the handset down before picking it up again and making another call. Only it wasnt to Sharon, it was to the police. Chrissie knew that Sharon and Dennis's odd behavior was no coincidence it had to have something to do with what happened last night and with what Neil did. She made up a hasty story about a break in and directed the police to No.5 Albert square, urging them to come quickly
She sent the kids to play in Hannah's bedroom before calling Jake and sending him to collect Alyss. She then picked up the phone and dialled another number. She heard a click and was greated with a voice she didnt expect to ever hear again.

?: Hello?
Chrissie: Hi its Chrissie. Amanda, its about Neil....

really really sorry about the wait we had visitors last night so i couldnt get away to post this. As usual the last part will be shown from more than one persons point of view and erm sorry to do this but the last part will actually be two parts: A and B andf then there will be a short epilogue. Part 45 A


Faith sat as still as she could as silent tears trickled down her cheeks. She squeeked in pain as the knife dug slowly further into her skin.

Neil: Is this what you want Sharon, do you want her to die?

Sharon was sobbing hard but looked at him with a new determination.

Sharon: You know its not. Please Neil just let her go.
Neil: You know it doesnt work like that. Its too late to just forget about all this. This is your fault. You brought us here. This happened because you left me for no reason with no explanation to go back to that low life.
Sharon: No reason?!!! You raped me.

Neil scoffed at the thought as though he'd completely erased that event from his memory

Neil: Its too late sharon theres nothing you can do first you watch your precious little girl die and then...then its your turn.

Chrissie paced up and down the living room. How was bringing amanda back going to make any difference? What did she plan to do when amanda got here? What if she brought Katie?
Chrissie sat dow and burried her head in her hands. What if nothing she did could make a difference and Neil got away with it again?

In the back of the car Alyss hugged her knees tightly to her chest. She'd been in this stationary position for well over five minutes since Jake had collected her from the phonebox. She hated her situation and she hated herself.
Something really bad must have happened for her dad to just walk of like that and Alyss could bare the fact that the last thing she had said to her sister was nasty and upsetting. She couldnt deal with that. Faith meant so much to her. She was her best friend. She couldnt lose her, she just couldnt. Faith had to be ok.

Faith whimpered again as she felt the warm, wet, sticky blood run down her neck beneath her top. She had slowed her breathing and daren't swallow for fear of pushing Neils knife deeper into her skin. Sharon trembled with fear and dared a glance are Dennis. His eyes were closed but Sharon watched as his eyelids flickered in pain.

Amanda nibbled at her fingers as she shoved her phone into her bag. She couldnt believe Chrissie had asked her to do this. It wasnt fair. Why couldnt life just be simple. She looked up to see her daughter enter the room and remembered why. Little Katie had had such a complicated and traumatic start in life but Amanda loved her just the same and wouldnt swap the perky isx year old for anything.

Katie: What are you doing mummy?
Amanda: We have to go on a trip baby. We're going to see mummys friend auntie Chrissie ok?
Katie: Ok mummy I'll get my coat.

The girl ran off and Amanda sighed heavily knowing that she was putting everything good in her life under jeopardy.

Dennis squeezed his eyes tight shut. He couldnt speak, he couldnt move, he couldnt even think straight because of the pain but he could hear. He could hear everything cing on around him as he lay still on the carpet bleeding to death. He knew that his family were in danger, he knew Neil had a knife to his daughters throat and her knew there was nothing he could do to save them.
He felt as his head went dizzy and his heart slowed, he was fading fast.

Neil smiled as Sharon stood helplessly infront of her eldest child, unable to solve her current predicament.

Neil: It could all be over Sharon. It could be quick. All you have to do is tell me to do it.
Sharon: What?!!
Neil: Tell me you want her to die and I'll do it quick otherwhise it'll be as slow as I can make it.

Sharon looked at her daughter. Faiths eyes pleaded with her, but to do what? Did she want it over, did she want sharon to want her dead or did she want to fight, did she want to keep hoping and fighting for he life. Sharon struggled to read the little girls expression and cried in desperation as Faiths eyes grew heavy from blood loss.
What should Sharon do?

At the moment I have no plans to do a sequal I mean the Faith stories were always meant to be a trilogy : Keeping the Faith, Keeping it in the Family and Keepsakes so maybe I need a rest from Faith but dont worry I will definatly be back with a new script soon although whether it will surround Faith and her family remains to be seen

Part 45 B


Sharon: Let her go Neil
Neil: So thats what you want is it, a slow painful death for your daughter.

Sharon knew exactly what she was doing, or at least she thought she did. She was biding her time. Someone had to come eventually, they had to and until then Sharon would fight for Faith and her husbands life. She wouldnt give up of them. She couldnt give up on them

Alyss jumped from the car seat and into the Vic, running straight up into the living area. She went into the main room where she found that the children were once again playing what appeared to be snap.They looked up.

Hannah: Hi Alyss
Alyss: Hi
James: What are you doing here?
Chrissie: James!
Alyss: Hi auntie Chrissie
Chrissie: Hi love, dont worry it'll all be ok

Alyss was shocked at the clarity with which Chrissie had read her mind. She felt a tugging at her jumper and looked down to see Ryan, his little fists clenched around the thick lilac wool. Alyss knelt down and put her arms on his shoulders.

Alyss: What is is Ryan?
Ryan: We're playing but Hanny and jame keep winning. I cant do it its not fair.

Alyss assumed 'Hanny' and 'Jame' where Hannah and James. She pulled her brother into a hud and nestled her nose into his ever present Thomas the Tank Engine jumper smelling the familiar scent of home.

Alyss: Come on I'll help you.

And so Alyss and the other children became absorbed in their game as a silent Chrissie waited nervously for news, any news.

Amanda hastily paid the taxi driver and guided her daughter into the busy pub. She walked straight up to the bar and smiled at the familiar face.

Amanda: Jake, its so good to see you
Jake: Same here go straight up she's waiting for you.

Amanda squeezed Katies hand and walked slowly up the stairs before walking into the living room, guided by the sound of innocent laughter. She noticed Chrissie immediatly who came up and gave her a big hug much to the surprise of her daughter who clinged more tightly to her mother.

Chrissie: This must be katie
Amanda: Yeah are they all yours?
Chrissie: God no just two blonde ones. Thats James and Hannah. The two over there in the carry cots thats Toby and Lilly and this little fellows Ryan and over there, thats Alyss. Those four are Sharon and Dennis's kids.

Amanda looked at Alyss who in turn gave her a searching look as though she knew exactly what was going on. Amanda tore her eyes away and looked to chrissie.

Amanda: look I dont know if I can help you, I dont want to get involved with all this again. I have Katie to think of.

Alyss stood up confidently and walked over to Amanda.

Alyss: Look if you can help us then please do. I know why your scared and I'm pretty sure I know whats going on. Its Neil isnt it?

The look exchanged between Amanda and Chrissie said it all.

Alyss: Your scared of losing your daughter I get that but the thing is that if you dont help me get my family back then I'll not only lose my parents but my big sister too. She's ten years old and the most amazing person on the planet. We fight sometimes but really I love her so much she...she's my hero. She saved my life once.

Alyss felt the wetness on her cheeks and knew she was crying. She watched as Amanda first looked to Chrissie then to her daughter who had joined in with the game of snap. Amanda had made her descision

ABOVE CONT.

Faith had stopped crying, storpped talking, stopped begging, stopped moving but Sharon knew that she was alive. The tell tale sign of her rising chest was all she had to go on but it was a good thing. She was still frozen to the spot, too scared to move. Too scared to move towards her suffering daughter and too afraid to turn round and tend to her dying husband.
Neil sepped away from an unconcious Faith and walked around standing closer to Sharon.

Neil: Thinking about Dennis?

She didnt give him the satisfaction of her answer.

Neil: You'll feel better when he's gone, maybe you wont have to die after all.

Neil placed his hands on Sharons waist and snuggled into her hair, kissing her neck.
Sharon felt nothing but utter disgust. She could hear the voice in her head loud and clear.

*Just push him away, step back and push him away*

But she couldnt, she was too scared. Terror and desperation had gripped her and rendered her mind numb and body numb to outside interventions.

*Push him away, just do it*

The voice called her but she just couldnt do it.

Alyss peered out of the window, looking towards her home, the place where she now knew her parents and sister were being held hostage. She squeezed her eyes tightly shut and hoped that things would be ok, they had to be .

Amanda felt the breeze on her face and took one last look up at the Vic before walking away. The Rickmans would be fine, they had to be.

Chrissie watched as her own children played along with Ryan and an absent minded Alyss. She prayed that those children would see their parents again and that Alyss would be re-united with her sister. They would, they had to.

Dennis gripped his hand to his side and tried to open his eyes. He had heard the crying and Neils ultimatum but now he was so confused. What had Sharon decided? Was Faith dead? Were they both dead?...Was he dead? Things would turn out for the best, thats the hope he clung to. They always did, they had to be.

The thought went round and round in Sharons head until she felt like screaming. Then...she did scream. As the tension built up she just let it go pushing Neil half way across the room in the direction of the fireplace.

Sharon: GET OFF ME!!!!

Neil looked at her

Neil: You'll pay for that!!

He stood up once again brandishing his knife and stepped towards Sharon. Before hse knew what was happening her legs were moving and she was running towards the back door. The only thought going through her head:

*He's going to kill me*

She could see the door it was open about an inch where sharon presumed Neil had come in. But she wasnt quick enough. Neil grabbed at the back of her jumper. She slipped and heard the sickening crack as her head collided with the tiled floor. She remotly regognised the memories swirling through her head as scenes from her life flashed before her:

Her childhood:
Sharon: I love you Daddy
Den: I love you to Princess

The Beginning of new things:
I'm Sharon nice to meet you"
"The pleasures all mine" he said passing her the wine "my names dennis"

Her happiest ever moment:
Dennis: I love you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you because i cant imagine a time when i wont want it to be you that i wake up next to. Sharon will you marry me?

The dank doctors office nearly eleven years ago:
Sharon: I dont believe this. I'm pregnant we're going to have a baby, we're gonna be parents.

The worst and best day of her life:
Sharon: Twins really? What happened are they OK
Dennis: No...no thye're not its touch and go for the little girl and our son, our son isnt going to make it

Ryans birth:
Dennis: A son, we have a son, Fay, Ally come see your little brother

The first time time Alyss said the words every parent wants to hear:
Sharon: Goodnight Baby, sleep tight
Alyss: Goodnight Mummy...love you

Then she let her eyes flicked open to se Neil, the knife ready and waiting to do its worst. Thats when things got confusing. Sharon watched in a terrified but dreamlike stake as a shadowed figure rose from behind Neil. The next thing she knew her was layed on the floor next to her, the knife flung into the corner of the kitchen. She could hear voices but her mind could no longer focus or concentrate. It was over. It was all over but as sharon closed her eyes and faded into oblivion she couldnt help but think that it was all too late. Too late for Dennis? Too late for Faith? Too late for Sharon? Simply too late?
