The scene: Outside in the market. The normal bustle of people coming and going. Alfie is shouting “Come on darling, try my new line in self-washable socks. Buy one sock, get one free” Kat is looking at him and shaking her head. Mo comes up to the Slaters’ stall.

Mo: What you looking at that toe rag for?
Kat: Sorry, gran, but he can be funny at times. Self-washable socks, what’s that all about?
Mo: Never mind ‘im, I’ve come to ask if you can baby sit tonight. Little Mo wants to go out.
Kat: Oh, Nan…

The scene moves along the market to Mickey’s stall. Mickey, Jules and Dawn are there.

Mickey: When you’ve made enough from helping me out you can give all that money back.
Dawn: I know.
Jules: I’ll pay for your operation myself. My word, Dawn, they’re enough to make a man want to…
Mickey: Have you ever heard of the word subtle, Julie?

Dot and Jim come past. The camera follows them along the street.

Dot: No, no, Jim, I’m telling you we have to get that kitchen cleaned up today.
Jim: But, Dorothy, I’ve promised Patrick…
Dot: Well, you can just go and unpromise him. I’ll get the stuff we need at the Mini Mart and then you and me is going to get to work. I’m not ‘aving my kitchen dirty. Supposing we ‘ave visitors?
Jim: ‘oo’s likely to visit us, my sweet?
Dot: Sonia or Pauline or anyone could come over.
Jim: Well, I’m sure they know what to expect.

They are still talking as they go in to the Mini Mart.

The camera moves along to Winston’s stall.

Tracey is looking through the CDs.

Winston: ‘ere Tracey, do you ever get fed up with just ‘avin’ a walk-on part?
Tracey: Well, I do sometimes get to say something in the Vic.
Winston: What like when Chrissie asks you if you can cover the evening shift and you say, “Yes.”? That’s not oscar-winning stuff is it?
Tracey: No, I suppose not.
Winston: Well, I think it’s about time we showed ‘em what we can do.
Tracey: And how can we do that?
Winston: Well, how about you and me announce our engagement in the Vic? That’s bound to lead to a big story line for us. You know what ‘appens when people announce their engagement, all sorts of things happen. It won’t go smoothly and we’ll both get big story lines, then we can be recognised for the good actors we really are.
Tracey: Well, it’s worth a go, Winston.
Winston: Good, let’s do it tonight.
They are interrupted by Martin and Sonia coming up to the stall.
Sonia: I think I might get some of those self-washable socks Alfie has.
Martin and Sonia walk off as Martin says:
Self-washable socks? What do you want them for?
As the camera follows them along the street we hear Winston, off camera, in the background:
Oh well, it was a nice thought while it lasted…
