Are you talking about having just a webpage hosted somewhere, or your own dedicated site>

Mordor - I know Princess didn't reply to this but I'd like some advice - I want to do my own dedicated site - I have some knowledge of writing HTML but seems a bit extreme for an entire site - but I don't want to invest in a piece of software like dreamweaver. What are the options in between?

I used dreamweaver when I set up a site for a local sports club. I found it really easy to use and I didn't need any knowledge of HTML. I went on a course for HTML at work and I haven't used it once in a year and a half of being a webmaster.

I'll give you an example of the costs and whats involved.

Purchase a domain name (eg. mysite.com). Cost approx £10 if you buy from 123-reg (http://www.123-reg.co.uk/). OneAndOne (http://www.oneandone.co.uk/) are also cheap.
Buy hosting. This can be cheap as £10 for the year or £15/month for a decent hosting plan. The £10/year offers are very good if your site is going to be small
Point your DNS servers (accessible from the company from where you purched the domain i.e. in (1) above), to the DNS specified by your new hosting company (ie (2) above).
FTP up your new site and you're away!
You don't need Dreamweaver to develop your site. There's plenty of free tools out there that do a similar job.

can you recommend any of the free tools?

Here's some:

NVU (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/nvu.html)
XGEN (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/xgen.html)
Arachnophilia (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/arachnophilia.html)

There's a whole list (http://www.snapfiles.com/downloadfind.php?st=web+development&search=Search&action=s) of shareware ones as well.
