Sounds like you've got spyware.

Download, install and run Microsoft AntiSpyware (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx)
Get Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) and ditch IE. Its an alternative web broswer thats free and easy to use, without all the the security problems of IE.

Hey Mordor,

I tried the Microsoft AntiSpyware but it said it would only work if I was using Windows 2000 or XP. I'm using Windows 98. Is there any way I can get around this? :wall: :thumbsdow

You could try Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/). Windows 98 is pretty old and not supported by Microsoft anymore so you might want to consider upgrading to Windows XP.

Help help help. I downloaded Ad-Aware and now everytime I open a folder or web page a message comes up saying "this programme has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down."

Ah, did you run adaware and did it remove a load of spyware from your system? Whats happened is that the references to the spyware still exist on your computer, hense the error messages.

You need to reinstall IE (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&DisplayLang=en). That should fix your problem.

if you right click on the internet icon on your desktop, click on properties, then click on privacy and there is a button that says Block pop ups, if you click on that it blocks most of the pop ups, there is also a settings icon that lights up when you click on that, if some of the sites you use - use pop ups you can type in the website address and it wont block the pop ups. hope you understand that and it can be of some help to you ;)
