Members of U2 have received one of Portugal's highest honours for their humanitarian work.

The band's lead singer, Bono, received the Order of Liberty along with The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr. during a ceremony held at the presidential palace in Lisbon.

The Portugese president Jorge Sampaio said that U2 had "combined the public exposure it received from its musical success with the protection of humanitarian causes," according to Reuters.
