what do you think their punishment should be?

i'm not really a footie fan, but my boyf made me watch match of the day and see the fight in the middle of a newcastle match between two players on the same team. i was shocked.

football has recieved enough bad press in recent times, as there is a feeling that the behaviour of players (clearly swearing on camera was mentioned) was having an effect on kids and their behaviour in the playground and shouldn't be shown in the afternoon.

this latest incident was far worse. the fact that they also didn't apologise to each other in the quickly arranged press conference afterwards only added to it.

children are highly impressionable, the incident was wrong on so many levels (bad sportsmanship for a start)

my question is, what do you think should the punishment should be? is a ban enough or should they be activley made to coach kids in the rights and wrongs of the sport?

I saw it on Match Of The Day and was quite shocked too, the fact that they are on the same team made it even worse!

The majority of football players these days are well behaved, however the antics of some of them (both on and off the pitch) give the others a bad name.

I personally think they should be given a hefty ban just to show that this sort of behaviour is not acceptable, although whether or not that will have an effect on the way children view these sorts of incidents, Im not sure.

there was a big thing in the media a few weeks ago about kids copying the behaviour of their hero's (only natural) this fight couldn't have come at a worse time

I watched MOTD just to see the fight. What a disgrace. I don't know who was guilty of what, but Newcastle should take a tough stance once the result of the investigation is known.

I hope they get the punishment they deserve, I think some of these footballers just get away with it these days.

Take Jermaine Pennant for example, recently jailed for drink driving. He's done an interview for a Sunday Newspaper moaning about his time inside. I appreciate that he has every right to do this, but he also goes on to say that he wants to be a role model for kids who might be going off the straight and narrow. This is just ludicrous- many kids probably already idolise him as it is, and he seems to have forgotten all about this. I was recently involved in an accident with a drunk driver myself (we were hit head on by the car which was on the wrong side of the road) so I have no sympathy for Pennant whatsoever and think he got off lightly.

We all make mistakes, but these footballers need to appreciate that being in the public eye, their every move is being watched by hundreds of young fans.

Ive just seen on the BBC Sports site that theres a possibility they might be dismissed, and the police are apparantly investigating the incident.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what they decide!

If they just get a ban, then its a disgrace.

On a less serious note - what did everyone think of the oscar winning perfomance by the defender when he handled the ball?

OMG!!! it was class, although to be fair to him as the goal keeper was miles away, so was just trying to his job!

Its a bit over the top isnt it?
Players fighting on the same team, should not have got sent off at all they didnt fight with the oppostion did they?
To ban them would be stpid because no one got hurt and i hate it when all this rubbish comes out in the papers that football should be put on late like its some porn movie... Its just a way to get into the papers by having a go at footballers probably because they are jealous that they couldn't be...

It doesn't matter who they fought with. The fact of the matter is they started a fight infront off thousands of fans which was then subsequently broadcast to millions around the world. This raises the following points: Are they good role models? We have hooligans off the pitch - hooligans on as well? And besides, the image of football they portrayed was absolutely disgusting. They are supposed to champion the sport, not demonize it.

I agree that putting on football late at night is ridiculous. People tune in to watch a football game and not a boxing match. If the football authorities had any balls, they'd come down hard on the guilty party.

LONDON (Reuters) - Newcastle United have fined Lee Bowyer six weeks' wages for his part in Saturday's on-field fight with team mate Kieron Dyer but have confirmed that both players would remain at the club.
In a statement on Monday Newcastle described the fine as the maximum allowed, estimated by local media to total around 250,000 pounds, after the ugly incident minutes from the end of their 3-0 home defeat by Aston Villa at St James' Park.

Newcastle said it was the highest fine the club had ever handed out.Former Leeds United and England midfielder Bowyer, 28, was also "severely censured" and warned as to his future conduct for what the club described as "his attack on Kieron Dyer."

Dyer escaped punishment and manager Graeme Souness said that the club would be appealing on his behalf against his red card."The decision to fine and censure Bowyer was taken after chairman Freddy Shepherd and Souness interviewed both players this morning," the club said.

"Both players have had a fair hearing and the club is fully in support of Kieron Dyer's claim (of wrongful dismissal) to the Football Association."Monday's fine was the latest in a long line of punishments that Bowyer has suffered in his controversial career, beginning with an eight-week ban for testing positive for marijuana while a teenager at Charlton Athletic.

VIOLENT OFFENCES

He was fined 4,500 pounds and narrowly escaped jail for throwing a chair in a McDonald's restaurant in 1996 and in 2001 was fined 64,000 pounds by Leeds for a "breach of the club's code of conduct".

He had been cleared of causing grievous bodily harm and affray in two lengthy court cases and initially refused to pay the fine.

Bowyer was also twice banned for six matches for violent offences -- by the FA in 2002 for elbowing Liverpool's Gary McAllister and by UEFA in 2003 for stamping on the head of Malaga player Gerardo.

Earlier on Monday Bowyer and Dyer shook hands for the cameras outside the club's training ground as Souness confirmed that they would both be staying.

"They have been speaking over the weekend, they've had a laugh about it. Obviously they both regret what has happened," Souness said.

"We will be focused on trying to do our best between now and the end of the season. The only important thing is to put this behind us and concentrate on trying to win a trophy for this club."

Asked if the players had a future at the club Souness said: "Most definitely."

However, Bowyer can expect a tough time from some of his team mates, not least captain Alan Shearer, who described Saturday's brawl as "a disgrace".

Newcastle ended the match with eight players as Steven Taylor had earlier been sent off for deliberate handball.

Shearer, who on Friday gave the club a boost by agreeing to play on for another season, told The Sun newspaper: "Once again the good name of Newcastle United is being dragged through the dirt.

NO DEFENCE

"What happened was a disgrace to the name of Newcastle United and to our loyal supporters. There is no defence for it and I made my feelings known in the dressing room.

"Our dirty linen has been hung out for the country to witness yet again," added the former England captain, in reference to earlier rows between Dyer and former boss Bobby Robson and between Souness and Craig Bellamy, who has since been loaned to Celtic.

Earlier on Monday the club announced a 5.1 million pounds profit for the six months to January 2005 -- an increase of 4.5 million on the corresponding period to January 2004.

They also announced that they had reached an agreement "in principle" with Robson over a final pay-off following his dismissal a few weeks after the start of the season
