BBC One has given the greenlight to From Darkness, a four-episode police drama from The Paradise scribe Katie Baxendale.

From Darkness tells the story of Clare Church, who, in the mid-90s, left the Greater Manchester Police, where she often found herself gnored in the office and second place in her relationship with her married DI. After leaving GMP, Clare moved to the remote island of Canna, with her new man, Norrie, and daughter Megan. But now, four bodies from Clare’s past investigations have been unearthed and she finds herself being pulled back in to a world she’d long since left behind and a case that only she can solve.

The four-parter was penned by Katie Baxendale, marking the first series commission for the writer. She has previously written for such dramas as The Paradise and Playing The Field. “From Darkness brings new writing talent to BBC One – Katie Baxendale’s first original commission is a powerful and provocative new serial”, said BBC One Controller Charlotte Moore.

From Darkness is being produced by BBC Drama North, who developed the project from an a original pitch as part of a BBC Writersroom scheme – fulfilling BBC Director-General Tony Hall’s pledge to bring more new writers to the BBC. Casting for the serial is currently underway. Hilary Martin is serving as the executive producer on the drama, which is set to enter production in the North of England in early 2015.
