Amelia Bullimore, who plays DCI Gill Murray on the series, will also write four of the scripts for the new series.

Scott and Bailey is produced by Red Production Company, which announced back in June that ITV was interested in a fourth run.

"We're thrilled to be producing a new series of Scott and Bailey," said Red director Nicola Shindler. "It's rewarding to think the public have become so familiar with the characters and taken them to heart.

"With this new series, we have the chance to explore great story ideas and continue developing those characters."

ITV's Director of Drama Steve November added: "ITV Drama without Scott and Bailey would be unthinkable. Its reputation for quality storytelling and great characterisation precedes it and it's become a firm favourite with ITV viewers."

The third series of Scott and Bailey wrapped on ITV in May, with its final episode attracting over 7m viewers.

Suranne Jones and Lesley Sharp have returned to their roles as inspiring crime-fighting team, Scott & Bailey.

Amelia Bullmore reprises her role as plain-speaking DCI Gill Murray who keeps control of Syndicate 9 and ensures the team delivers in spite of the pressures of modern day policing.

Battle-scarred from their shocking conflict last series, Rachel (Suranne Jones) and Janet (Lesley Sharp) determine to move forward with focus and honesty. For Rachel, that means giving her career her best shot, unencumbered by the chaos of her personal life. For Janet, it means giving herself the opportunities she deserves, and enjoying her autonomy.

In this spirit, both Scott and Bailey find themselves in front of the promotion board, interviewing for Sergeant. When both pass with flying colours, the task falls to DCI Gill Murray (Amelia Bullmore) to choose which one stays on as Sergeant at Syndicate 9.

The story of the week involves the kidnap and murder of a vulnerable young adult, Robin McKendrick. When Robin doesn’t turn up at the pub for work on payday, his ex-copper landlord alerts the police. With a brother involved in local gang rivalry, there’s a chance that Robin has been caught up in some sort of reprisal. When a photo of Robin, bound and gagged in the boot of a car, shows up on Facebook, Syndicate 9 know that he’s probably already dead. But the body they recover from a flooded quarry is a woman.

Janet keeps Gill's secret but shares another secret with Rachel; she wants a boyfriend.

When Mandy Sweeting’s body is discovered, 23 years after she went missing, the new Sergeant takes on huge proportions. Wading through narrow-minded police work and re-interviewing bruised and bereft family members, makes this a particularly challenging case.

Episode three

After promising that the chaos of her personal life was behind her, Rachel is torn when she discovers that her mother’s new boyfriend is a violent domestic abuser.

Janet goes on her first date, but gets cold feet at the last minute, when the idea of having to sell herself to a stranger makes her heart sink.

When Rich Hutchings is found murdered in the flat he shares with his husband Adam, their neighbour Barry, an outspoken and violent homophobe, is the prime suspect. But as Adam’s friend, Tim, struggles to remember the events of their night out, it seems that Barry might be in the clear.

I think they were showing more of their personal lives in last nights episode. It is good tv though and I love anything with Suranne Jones and Lesley Sharp in.

Not convinced by Danny Miller. He looks far to young!

Episode four of eight

At a Police Initiative launch, Gill introduces her new sergeant to Det Sup Will Pemberton, an ambitious man on his way to ACPO rank. But it soon becomes clear that Rachel didn’t need the introduction - she and Will have been enjoying a passionate and discreet relationship for the last few months. And whilst Will would like to shout it from the rooftops, Rachel would prefer to keep it secret, concerned that rumors might fly about her motives. When Gill lets slip that Janet was first choice for the sergeant’s job, Rachel’s old defensiveness rears its ugly head.

Having been blown away by Eleanor Goodhead and the happy home life she has created with Ade, Janet is inspired to keep going with the dating game. But a speed dating evening proves unfulfilling when she realizes she’s unable to take off her police goggles, interviewing every man as if they’re a suspect. Unaware that Gill has spilt the beans, Janet is baffled as to why Rachel is suddenly pulling rank.

The story of the week involves the murder of a woman in a hotel room in Manchester. With only a necklace and the name ‘Lola’ to go on, Syndicate 9 tries to piece together the woman’s last known movements. When a witness comes forward to report a sexual encounter that left her feeling uneasy, it seems that a hook-up site could hold the answers.

Episode five

Unable to get over being second choice, RACHEL punishes JANET for not telling her. Thrilled to be chosen for a Vice initiative, RACHEL’s stung by GILL’s jibe that she’s sleeping her way to the top.

ELISE moving in with ADE, has made JANET feel inadequate as a mother, and whilst she hasn’t given up on the idea of a boyfriend, she’s certain he won’t be found online.
When an unconscious baby is admitted to hospital, staff are concerned that his injuries don’t match his parents’ explanatios. But with a child-minder and her stoned boyfriend in the mix, it’s unclear who had the baby’s best interests at heart.

Long: Unable to make peace with being second choice, RACHEL punishes JANET for keeping the truth from her. And whilst WILL seems to be everything she ever wanted, not even he can persuade her that she needs to drop the attitude. RACHEL is delighted when WILL tells her that she’s been chosen for a Vice initiative, but it isn’t long before her self-doubt and GILL’s sharp comments make her worry about how her relationship with WILL might be perceived.

Tired of being painted as the bad guy, JANET is keen to clear the air with RACHEL and to make her understand that she was simply honoring GILL’s request. And having tried to be brave about ELISE’s choice to live with ADE & ELEANOR, JANET finds she’s missing her daughter and feeling inadequate as a mother. DOROTHY thinks a good man might be the answer, and whilst JANET hasn’t given up on the idea of a boyfriend, she’s certain he won’t be found online.

The story of the week involves the death of a baby boy. When an unconscious ANDREW REDHEAD is admitted to hospital, staff become concerned that his injuries don’t match his parents’ explanation of events. But when an unregistered child-minder and her stoned boyfriend come into the equation, it’s unclear who had ANDREW’s best interests at heart.

Episode six

Still troubled by Gill’s comments about her relationship with Will, Rachel gets cold feet about being ‘out’ with him at an award ceremony. Convinced that people will think she’s sleeping her way to the top, Rachel makes excuses about her workload and ducks out. But Will has had enough of Rachel making such hard work of it all and Rachel is gutted when he ends what was possibly the best relationship she’s ever had.

Already struggling with Elise’s decision to live with Ade, Janet is challenged even further when she has to deal with Eleanor in a work capacity. And when she discovers that Elise’s heart is being broken by Eleanor’s son, her maternal instincts make her want to rescue her daughter and bring her home. But when Rachel suggests that Elise won’t thank Janet for wading in, she takes heed and her patience pays off.

The story of the week involves the murder of Tam and Pat Robbinson, shot at close range in their pub in the early hours. Having lost his sister when he was three, son Simon feels utterly alone. But when Simon’s aunt is asked to identify the bodies, she tells them that sister Carla didn’t die, but was disowned after failed attempts at rehab. And when a connection is found between Carla and ex-offender Ben Townsley, it feels like Syndicate 9 is onto something.

Episode seven

Mindful of GILL’s imminent retirement, RACHEL is keen to learn as much from her mentor as possible. But while GILL is dazzling RACHEL with her brilliance, JANET is voicing concerns to DODSON about GILL’s drinking. Hoping it can be dealt with ‘between friends’, JANET is unnerved to discover that DODSON can’t ignore the allegations. And just as RACHEL feels like she’s getting to grips with the job, she makes a fatal error that puts JANET and CHRIS in danger.

Having been alerted by RACHEL to the charms of colleague CHRIS, JANET finds she’s enjoying his company, but when a car chase they’re involved in ends in a fatality, JANET wonders whether her flirtatious behaviour meant she took her eye off the ball. And as if being under investigation wasn’t enough, JANET has to face GILL’s anger at being under DODSON’s scrutiny.

The crime story begins with the discovery of a man’s body on the moors. With nothing to identify him, a roadblock is set up and an appeal put out. When the man’s ex-girlfriend comes forward to identify him, it turns out he disappeared 15 years ago and hasn’t been seen since. When enquiries lead JANET & CHRIS to a nearby farm, they discover something much more sinister and shocking than they could’ve anticipated.

Having been the driver involved in the fatal collision with Cal Pritchard, Janet is under investigation and unable to interview Evie Pritchard. Devastated by the consequences of their actions, Janet eventually finds solace in Chris’s calm and kind reasoning.

I agree, Norman. I've been a fan of Lesley's for years. She's quite a subtle actress compared to Suranne, but both are excellent.

I watched the first two episodes of the latest series last night and thoroughly enjoyed them.

ITV commissions new episodes of Scott & Bailey from Red Production Company starring Suranne Jones and Lesley Sharp

ITV has commissioned a three-part special series of Scott & Bailey featuring a single crime story to be produced by award winning independent producers Red Production Company.

The three-part format will allow the story to unfold with scale and ambition as Scott & Bailey tackle one of the biggest and darkest cases they have ever had to face.

Both Suranne Jones and Lesley Sharp return to the roles of super cool Scott and her hotheaded partner DS Bailey; the crime-fighting partnership forged over four previous series following the drama’s successful critical and ratings launch on ITV in 2011.

With DCI Gill Murray in retirement, ever-ambitious Rachel (Suranne Jones) returns from her Vice secondment fired up and full of new ideas and initiatives. She’s gained valuable experience and really wants to make her mark as she returns to Syndicate 9’s Murder Squad.

Exhilarated to step up to the plate, Rachel is exactly who Janet (Lesley Sharp) and the Squad need to move forward with a terrifying and sinister Internet crime investigation of epic scale and unrelenting horror. Using her Vice authorisation, Rachel accesses a disturbing world where people brag about committing murder and lay down the gauntlet for the next victim. A game of ruthless life or death daring develops, as Scott & Bailey investigate multiple killers with horrifying and everlasting consequences. They will be changed forever and the investigation will take a devastating toll on their private, professional and personal lives.

The drama will be executive produced by Nicola Shindler (Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax, Banana, Cucumber) founder of the Red Production Company and produced by Michaela Eccleston, Red’s Head of Production.

Suranne Jones, who conceived the idea for the drama with fellow actress Sally Lindsay, will also executive produce alongside Nicola. Sally Lindsay also returns to the drama playing Rachel’s sister Alison.

“I’m very excited to be returning to the series as Rachel Bailey and this time to be working alongside Nicola Shindler as an Executive Producer,” said Suranne.

The characters of Scott & Bailey were created by BAFTA and RTS award winning writer and playwright Sally Wainwright (Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax, Unforgiven) and retired detective Diane Taylor who helped shape the series from her experiences of working within the Greater Manchester Police Force.

Writer Lee Warburton, who penned episodes for the last series of Scott & Bailey, will write the new episodes with writer Paul Logan. The drama will be filmed in Oldham, Manchester and surrounding areas from September 2015.

Two new police advisors, Samantha Manning and Lisa Farrand join the series, as consultants, and a director will be appointed shortly.

“We’re delighted to be returning to Scott & Bailey with an investigation that will have everlasting consequences for the characters,” said Nicola. “This series is more ambitious and sinister than ever before and the concept of a three part story allows us the opportunity to tackle a story of epic scale and ambition,” she added.

Scott & Bailey has been commissioned for ITV by Director of Drama Commissioning Steve November and Controller of Drama Victoria Fea.

“Scott & Bailey is a firm favourite with ITV viewers who relate to the characters’ busy professional and working lives,” said Steve. “We’re thrilled Red are reuniting Suranne and Lesley to play the iconic characters so deftly created by Sally Wainwright and Red’s production team,” said Steve.

Series synopsis

A three-part special of Scott & Bailey, featuring a single crime, comes to ITV in April.

Produced by award winning independent producers Red Production Company, the three-part format allows this series to unfold with scale and ambition as Scott & Bailey tackle one of the biggest and darkest cases they have ever had to face.

Suranne Jones and Lesley Sharp return to the roles of super cool Janet Scott and her hotheaded partner Rachel Bailey; the crime-fighting partnership forged over four previous series following the drama’s successful critical and ratings launch on ITV in 2011.

With D.C.I. Gill Murray in retirement, ever-ambitious Rachel (Suranne Jones) returns from her Vice secondment fired up and full of new ideas and initiatives.

They will be changed forever and the investigation will take a devastating toll on their professional lives.

The special has been executive produced by Nicola Shindler (Happy Valley, Ordinary Lies, Last Tango in Halifax) founder of the Red Production Company and Suranne Jones, who conceived the idea for the drama with fellow actress Sally Lindsay who returns to the drama playing Rachel’s sister Alison.

Episode 1

Returning to Syndicate 9 after a year with Vice, Rachel (Suranne Jones) needs some time to rekindle her neglected friendship with Janet (Lesley Sharp), but the shocking murder of Michael Edgerton forces her to hit the ground running as she steps up to Acting DI under the watchful eye of Julie Dodson (Pippa Haywood). When a teenage boy sees a clip of Michael’s murder on the darknet, it’s clear that Syndicate 9 are dealing with something much bigger and more sinister than a single, indiscriminate murder. A sick game is being played and Syndicate 9 need to find the next potential victim before the killer does.

Glad of Rachel’s return, Janet couldn’t have known how much she was going to need her friend. When Taisie (Harriet Waters) is arrested, setting off an inconceivable chain of events, Janet is thrown into turmoil and Rachel’s wisdom and experience are exactly what she needs to steer her through the crisis.

As Scott & Bailey returns to ITV for a new three-part series on Wednesday (April 13), Suranne Jones reveals how Rachel Bailey's hiding a dark secret...

What has detective Rachel Bailey been up to since we last saw her? And what's her relationship like with DS Janet Scott (Lesley Sharp) when she returns?
"Rachel's been away for a year, working with the Vice team down in London. In that time, Rachel and Janet haven't been in touch that much simply because they've both been busy, so they've got to find their feet with each other again. Scott & Bailey's always been about the love story between these two friends."

What do you mean by that?
"Well, it's just a real relationship. They don't have men in their lives that 'work', yet they work and it's nice. Scott & Bailey has always been about the women, and the actual crime is almost secondary. And it's the same again – there's definitely a heavier focus towards the relationship."

Indeed, Scott & Bailey has always focused on Rachel and Janet's personal lives outside of their work. What can we expect when the three-part series begins this week?
"We find out Rachel's got a secret – let's just say, she's come back having had a really good time in London! Meanwhile, there's a personal trauma for Janet. Because she's been working 24/7, she may have taken her eye off the ball a bit with her family life. Janet's now forced to focus on that."

At work, Rachel's back on Syndicate 9's murder squad as Acting Detective Inspector. How is this new role a challenge for her?
"Rachel comes back with a bit of chip on her shoulder – she thinks she's been out in the big wide world and learned a lot and now she's back working with a team who really know her and how take the mick, so it's hard. She also takes an instant dislike to new recruit DC Anna Ram (played by ex-Holby City actress Jing Lusi) – she doesn't take kindly to her inappropriate banter."

Rachel with a chip on her shoulder… surely not!
"I know – when hasn't she had a chip on her shoulder? She's rude at the best of times and she's got no social skills whatsoever. When we were developing this series, we played with the fact that Rachel had grown up – but it didn't really work!"

This series of Scott & Bailey follows one case all the way through. What can you tell us about it?
"It's a very dark and sinister serial killer case, opening up a disturbing and terrifying world hidden online. Rachel has the skills to lead the case, but it's a massive investigation so, for all her bolshiness, she actually feels very insecure that she can't handle it. It's like they're almost not dealing with real people; everything's playing out on a computer screen and that's the scary thing. There's lots at stake for Rachel."

While making this series, did you learn anything about internet crime that really shocked you?
"Yeah, some of the stuff you agree to on your phone actually gives access to people listening in, who might be recording things or taking personal information. You don't know what you're agreeing to half the time on emails or on updates and you're allowing all kinds of things in. It's scary."

Do you always enjoy reuniting with Lesley for the show?
"Oh yeah! Lesley and I are like a pair of comfy old slippers you can just put on. I always see us coming back in 20 years time, when we're old and grey, and doing a 'Scott & Bailey meets Rosemary and Thyme' type of show. Even at 70, Rachel still won't have grown up – she'll still be drinking and going crazy!"

Finally, congratulations on your Best Drama Performance win for Doctor Foster at the National TV Awards earlier this year…
“Oh, thank you. When I signed up for Doctor Foster, it sounded like a good programme but, when you say it's a drama about a couple and one has an affair, it didn’t sound as exciting as it was. But people really got behind it and I'm delighted we're making another one."

Episode 2

20th April

With information about the Taking Out The Trash website in the public domain, monitoring potential targets is severely compromised and Mitch’s missing daybook seems the likely source of the leak. When Rachel receives an email with video footage of Will’s murder, it’s clear the rules of the game have changed and Rachel’s safety is in question.

Acting as appropriate adult in Taisie’s (Harriet Waters) police interview, Janet (Lesley Sharp) feels powerless to protect her daughter. Rachel tells her that as a police officer, she mustn’t interfere, but Janet is Taisie’s mum first and knows she has to do something to stop the madness. At the end of Syndicate 9’s darkest day, Janet and Rachel share a drink, and it’s clear to Janet that the world is a now a very different shape.

Episode 3

27th April 2016

Rachel (Suranne Jones) is criticised for the lack of progress in the investigation and with Steve Dench (Richard Riddell) still the prime suspect, she knows she must find both a murder weapon and the encryption code used to access the Taking Out The Trash website. Then, they not only get Steve for multiple murders, but they also find the man he’s playing his sick game with. Discovering that the witness at Michael Edgerton’s murder may be one of the killers marks a big breakthrough, and with the attacks increasing, Rachel hopes that the killers will start to make mistakes.

The appearance of a star on Rachel’s gatepost terrifies Alison (Sally Lindsay) and when Julie Dodson (Pippa Haywood) finds out, Rachel’s position as Acting DI is jeopardized. But with new evidence challenging Steve’s alibi and a positive ID of the witness, Rachel is determined to hang onto the case. When Janet’s (Lesley Sharp) attempt to help Taisie (Harriet Waters) results in a complaint, her faith in doing everything by the book is rocked, and with Rachel’s pregnancy out in the open, both Scott and Bailey have life-changing decisions to make about their futures.
